The Definitive - tractor beam - Close the blast doors - Blast it, Biggs/Wedge - you don't taste very good - Noooooo!!!" - Preservation Guide.

The differences in the dialogue spoken in the original three Star Wars films has always fascinated me and about 5 years ago I began listening to the various different "mixes" I heard of each film with a plan to do a single point of reference posting for all to see. Having briefly borrowed the Blu Ray release, my journey is complete.

There are gaps - various 8mm, 16mm, and 70mm - that I have not heard and I also now plan to cross-reference the differences I have highlighted with the same lines from the novels, original ReadAlongs, Special Edition ReadAlongs, the Marvel graphic novels, the Special Edition graphic novels as well as the Radio Drama's. I will add those to this post as and when I get around to it. I also need to finish the actual available sources for each mix - ie time compressed LaserDiscs and various VHS releases.

I have only chosen actual dialogue differences and not just different "takes". I have also avoided any of the Special Edition(s) added scenes. If anyone thinks that any other lines deserve a mention, please feedback and I will consider it.

The times given are from the NTSC GOUT which seemed to me as the most commonly available reference source.

One audio change I've been wondering about for a while was Lando's line  "We're sure in the middle of it now" in ROTJ.   The only version I remember seeing it in is the 97, though I may have missed it elsewhere.

Both this one

When R2-D2 is being loaded into Luke's X-Wing, C-3PO says "and" before saying "do take good care of yourself."

and Lando's line "We're sure in the middle of it now"

are in the original theatrical mixes and in their '93 THX remastered tracks, those lines are just mixed lower in volume compared to other mixes.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

I have heard that said before. All I know is that in my initial research I never heard the extra "and". Likewise, I have just re-checked over a dozen pre-SE transfers and heard no extra "and".

I will look more into that Lando line another time.......

The 'and' is there all right.  It's just really quiet.  I only discerned it relatively recently myself.

I'm listening to the DJ V3 through headphones with the volume cranked up, and msycamore is right. In both the 1985 and 1993 mixes, after R2's beeping, you can hear "and" mixed in very low, almost at whisper volume.

I'm not sure whether it was intentional, or whether it was an error in the original mix. Perhaps the original mixers intended for the "and" to be there but accidentally mixed it in too low, or alternatively, they might have intended for it not to be there but they didn't completely dial it out.

It's one of those anomalies like "Luke, come on!" in the 2004/2011 mixes of ANH. In that case, Leia did always say "Luke," you can even make out Carrie's mouth movement right before it cuts away, but up until '04 it was always mixed in very, very low and drowned out by the laser fire and explosions.

For the sake of clarity, I think it would be important to identify how each later remix was derived, so its similarity or lack thereof to other versions can be easily traced.  For example, the 1993 mix of SW is simply a downmix of the 70mm version with additional sounds added on top, so its dialogue is identical, while the 1985 version is basically the same as the 35mm stereo except with the tractor beam line added.  The 1997 version comes from an original 4-track master with additional changes layered in, so most of its dialogue is again the same but with the tractor beam and blast door lines added.

The GOUT mixes are all from 1993, so they don't need to be in a separate category.

SW '04 and '11 are mostly the same remix except for a few tweaks, while ESB and RotJ are the same as each other in all three SE versions but with minor changes, so again their dialogue remains the same except where new dubs were added.

One other thing: while I can't state this with absolute certainty, I'm pretty sure that there were no 1985 remixes for ESB or RotJ.  With no content changes, and the total sound being so similar, I think the theatrical stereo tracks were used for all home releases up until 1993.

I have already thought about adding the GOUT as a source of the 1993 mix. DONE

Agreed too about the 1985 remixes of ESB and ROTJ. All I know for certain is that ESB went to Digital Sound at this time and to me, that alone is enough of a difference to list it seperately - even if it is the same mix.

I have updated the original post as follows. I hope the wording is to everyone's liking.......

Dialogue Difference 5 29:46

When R2-D2 is being loaded into Luke's X-Wing, C-3PO says an extra "and" before saying "do take good care of yourself.". However, in all the pre-SE mixes, the extra "and" is actually there but cannot be heard under normal listening conditions. In the SE mix and beyond, the extra "and" is very clearly heard.

Fascinating stuff, I never realized Luke ever said "Blast it Wedge, where are you?"

Don't forget "The first transport is away" is different in the Special Edition and beyond of Empire.  I know it's Mark Hamill for those versions, not sure if it's his voice pitched down, or another person's voice for previous versions.

One other minor thing I though I might note is that in the mixes where Lando's "in the middle of it" line is not audible, they left in the "now," seemingly inexplicably.

In Harmy's version of ESB, Luke says to his wingman "Stay tight and low.."

But you can see his mouth move right afterwards as if he is speaking the line I remember from the special edition "This is it!"

Assuming that Harmy has not made a mistake (highly unlikely I would think) when was that second line added? Does it appear in earlier versions than the special edition?

His mouth has always moved as though saying the line, but no pre-1997 mix ever had it.  I never noticed the movement until the SE made it obvious that he was speaking at that point.

Why they chose to include the line or not is unknown, but there's no mistake.

I'm pretty sure that in "A New Hope" when Han, Luke, Ben and the Droids are hiding under the floor in the millennium falcon, one of the Stormtroopers says "Theres no one here" in some versions but stays silent in others.

Added in 2004 and still in the 2011 Blu Ray.

As well as that line, a bit of research tells me that I also need to add "We’ve stopped!" and "He’s on your tail" to ANH and "This is it" to ESB. I will add these shortly when I have done all my checks.

Are there any others??

I'm not so familiar with the 2004 re-mix and I haven't heard the 2011 re-mix to tell if these are true or not.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.
