R. I. P. Steve Jobs. : (
It is sad and I hope he rests in peace. He was quite the visionary. I suppose it isn't that shocking, considering his previous health issues and retirement from Apple; still, the world has suffered a great loss. He was the man who managed to market technology like touchscreen pads and touchscreen phones to mass populaces well.
:( RIP Steve Jobs. Thank you for everything, not just Apple but Pixar too!
Thank you for thinking different!
On a personal level it is sad and tragic if someone dies pretty young because of cancer. My mother died because of esophagael cancer last year, so I know how hard and painful this is for family and friends.
As an IT professional, that has a very strong dislike for Apple, its overpriced products, blatant ripoffs of other products, ruthless business strategies, explotation of workers, pollution, non-conformity to open standards, lawsuits against other innovative, competing companies, etc. I can only say: Thank God his tyranny is finally over. Let's hope Apple will eventually get on the right path.
What path would that be? Not making as much money as they have been? Because I don't see the investors going for that.grisan said:

Having a customer service department that doesn't call people an arse for wanting a fully functioning laptop after it started zapping people and exploding their headphones off their heads while under warranty would be a step in the right direction (IMHO).
Is Microsoft any better?
Full disclosure - I use PC, not Mac. Though I do have an old iPod, I'll be moving everything to my phone soon.
I don't know, I've never owned any Microsoft hardware but the the attitude to software development leaves a lot to be desired.
I wouldn't want Bill Gates to get pancreatic cancer and die prematurely though.
I disagree with Jobs that death is a good bit of design.
I want my lives to work right out of the box and last practically forever (like this laptop after Apple finally got around to fixing it).
I also want the experiences and information trapped inside this body of mine to transfer into a new one when it's reaches a point of being beyond repair.

Of course not. I don't believe anyone said they are happy Jobs is dead.

I never realized he exploited workers. or that he polluted. what is meant by non-conformity to open standards?

grisan, surely you know that the negative parts of corporate activity happen with many/most/all tech companies. I really don't know how bad Apple was on those fronts, but to be honest we'd have to view it in context of other such companies.
I hold a negative view of Apple products but what makes them special is that they operate in such a relatively closed system focused on design as much as technology. It takes a lot to sustain such a business model. I wager, but Apple has done it for this long. Whether Apple will continue to do so without Jobs...I doubt it. I don't think there is a "right path" but there is a more generic one. I don't desire Apple to lose what makes it special as I imagine it has a unique competitive influence on other companies.
Whether we need to reform patent (I think so) and other laws is a separate matter.
The blue elephant in the room.
Regardless that iphones suck, always a pity when someone dies from that horrible disease.

Oh, you can most certainly break it.
Also, the guy gets a lot of credit for "making" things like the MacBook and iPhone, when he didn't really design any of the things Apple has made for decades.
That said, the man was a genius, certainly on the marketing front. I didn't like him, and I don't like Apple, but he did make a lot of contributions to this technology-filled world, and so it is still a shame.

END OF LINE
(It hasn’t happened yet)
I love my MacBook, and I love Apples operating system.
Everyone saying "iPhones suck" I think are forgetting about back when they were groundbreaking. When the iPhone first came out, you have to admit, it was a pretty impressive piece of technology. Now there are much better alternatives. But I think we could still argue that the iPhone is largely responsible for the way smart phones have evolved over the last few years. The iPhone's style went from revolutionary, to pretty much standard.
That article Tryph posted pretty much says that everything I have really come to dislike about Apple as a company was single handedly Job's decision. If that is true, I really hope the company's trends take a sharp turn for the better.
Did he do the iCLAVDIVS?
RIP Mr. Jobs....
Mr. Steve Jobs pretty much admitted he stole ideas, and made them better in his execution, something I appreciate. I believe that many of his ideas actually rushed our development in certain areas where they otherwise would have been stagnant for years and years. It's not so much he was a revolutionary as he was a evolutionary, either way, I respect him immensely. I good capitalist always gets my respect, if at least for having endured the stress and worries involved in seeing his vision come true.

you appreciate that he stole other people's ideas?
I think the emphasis should be on the "made them better in his execution", which I agree with for the most part.Warbler said:

even so, he stole other people's ideas.
When can we start making jokes about his death without everyone here being too sensitive about it. You know, like:
When Obama said he would take care of jobs, who knew this is what he meant?
Looks like PC finally beat Jobs for good.
