Saw this on ebay , didn't know if it would be of interest to anyone here:

Looks interesting. It seems to be one of the re-release Trailers, since the early trailers didn't have the TIE-Fighter window.
The FX-Shots in these trailers are almost always the complete shot of that scene, so that might be interesting for our 35mm guys as well.

trailers are fine,

but i'm more concerned about full reels

or nearly full ones.

yeah,

well, i have to be very vague.

the whole point is not to get the

attention of LFL about this!

that's why we're doing it

privately...

I noticed people seemed to be talking about cleaning dirt/dust/etc from the film as post-production step. Normally this would be done by cleaning the film physically before scanning. Is that not possible for anyone that has actual film of the original trilogy?

Obviously, this is excluding other damage the film stock may have incurred.

right,

it depends on the condition of the film,

and how fragile it is. regardless, there are

chemical cleaning processes that are almost

always used.

And that's why I hope some feathers won't be ruffled if -1 decides not to invite everyone, immediately, to his site.  There are a lot of folks popping up here who could be anyone.

makes perfect sense. also all sorts of technical problems crop up which derail stuff before stuff gets going practically (as described) . will be interesting to hear down the line what can be acheived though.

From what I've seen of it, there's not much dirt, but there are little green scratch marks that occur along the left-hand side of the film.

Not too distracting if you're used to seeing that sort of thing, but I'm sure it'll be first priority.

These are very distracting for me, because they're not random scratches, they seem to keep appearing throughout the film, I hope those can be erased.

How do you transfer the film?

Er, while it only takes 6 words to ask the question, it would take several paragraphs to answer.  It's like saying "how do you do calculus?" and expect someone to just zip out the answer.  You might want to go to wikipedia and enter the word "telecine" for a good description of the various ways that film is digitized.

I looked all that stuff up but how is this being done?

Seems kind of hard to get a film like this transferred on your own?  Are you scanning each shot in with a home scanner?  That seems really hard and time-consuming.

Very cool.  Is there something like this for 35mm?

 They're not telling.

Yes but they are much more expensive.  Few individuals would buy one for themselves.  Typically a professional service would own one and people would pay them to do the transfer.  I'm pretty sure that is the case here.  But it is complicated by the fact that no professional service would transfer a print of Star Wars because the clear copyright violation would endanger them legally.
