So, I wonder how many of these BD sets have sold now? I wonder if the sales have dropped significantly since the first week of release.

When I was going through the flyers in this Sunday's newspaper, I didn't see one single ad for the set- not in Target, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, etc. You'd think they'd still be pushing it since it's only been out a couple of weeks.

Too lazy to do the math myself - not too lazy to dig up a few sources for the amount of dough LFL raked in so far:

deadline.com: ‘Star Wars: The Complete Saga’ On Blu-Ray Breaks Worldwide Sales Records

movies.com: 'Star Wars' Blu-ray Sales Breaks Records Globally Despite Fan Outcry

movies.yahoo.com: Your Boycott of the ‘Star Wars’ Blu-Rays Worked! Oh, Wait, No, It Didn’t at All

I think the BD set broke the record for most Blu rays sales gross in its first weekend, no? Whatever number of units that translates to, clearly it's more than all but maybe the top couple of titles.

Uhh... turns out I should've been a lil less lazy and actually read what I dig up. The articles actually give a number of sold SKUs plus the overall amount of money they brought in.

Quote from above sources:

"... the Complete Saga on Blu-ray release broke global sales records with
1 million units sold and $84 million filling cash registers.

It quickly becomes the #1 pre-order and #1 catalog title since the launch of the high-definition format."

A lot of films raise revenue from product placement.

Star Wars has an edge over those forms of entertainment because the product (namely the merchandising) placed in the film is franchised by the author.

When the SE came out not only did Lucas get increased revenue from the theatrical run and later the home video releases but there was also unique merchandising (Ronto toys, Swoop bikes etc).

Possibly, to keep the merchandizing rights he has to extend the copy on the films, which means making changes to shift the identity of the copy.

What I don't understand is how this would effect the original cuts of the films.

If the 1977 version of Star Wars reached it's expiration date in terms of entering public domain would that include the merchandising rights if the SEs had prolonged the copy life?

Don't own a high def tv much less a bluray player so this release is meaningless to me.

However I just want to throw out there that I miss the old days when being a star wars fan was so much easier. There were only single versions of the films and people only argued which film they liked better, but would always agree that they liked them all.

Le sigh.

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

I'm going to play devil's advocate here and say that Lucas was against colorization .....Making that speech is 100% consistent with Lucas' insistence that movie studios are completely awful. It's not as hypocritical as one might think,

You might want to research that a little more;

Lucas said:

more advanced technology will be able to replace actors with "fresher faces," or alter dialogue and change the movement of the actor's lips to match. It will soon be possible to create a new "original" negative with whatever changes or alterations the copyright holder of the moment desires......This would be a great loss to our society. Our cultural history must not be allowed to be rewritten

I might also add:

Lucas said:

The copyright holders, so far, have not been completely diligent in preserving the original negatives of films they control....The public's interest is ultimately dominant over all other interests. And the proof of that is that even a copyright law only permits the creators and their estate a limited amount of time to enjoy the economic fruits of that work....Attention should be paid to the interest of those who are yet unborn, who should be able to see this generation as it saw itself, and the past generation as it saw itself.

For most people lazy 2 and a half star blu ray is good enough, so that is broke a worldwide sales record.

Lucas can be as lazy as hell and still rake it in because of the brand name.

Truly a sad and dark time to be not only a star wars fan but a cinema fan.

Seriously the prequels were phoned in and so was Indiana Jones crystal skull and look at the money they made.

The sad thing about Lucas is, that you are only good, when you accept his new vision. What I am trying to say is that, it's not only that OUT fans are ignored. 1997 fans are also ignored (trust me, there are many people who prefer them over 2004 edition - no Hayden, better colors and so on), just like the 2004 fans (they also do exist - all those kids who grew up with it). Now everyone has to accept the 2011 version. But the saddest thing is, when the 3D version (with new changes) comes out, this will be the version you will have to accept. Those who prefer the 2011 version, will be ignored again.

Do you prefer the 1997 edition? Well, the best possible quality (available legally) is only laserdisc.

Do you prefer 2004 edition, without Vader yelling noooo? Well, the best possible quality is DVD.

And so on....

With Lucas, you just have nothing to say. You can't have a version you prefer. You have to accept what vision Lucas actually have and that's it.

I heard the rumor, that when the complete Box is sold out, it's gone. No re-release. Just the trilogy-boxsets will be re-released. Can anyone approve this?

Lucas has made that threat before.

1995 - "final home video release"

1997 - "SE only out in theaters"

I wouldn't worry too much about it.

You forgot one. ;)

Yup, yup. Basically, Lucas is saying: "allowing the copyright holder to alter a film at a whim is bad...unless that copyright holder is me."

That explains why every home video

Of star wars has problems. George Lucas hates home video.

In the context of the era, it's not that outrageous. Home video was in it's infancy, and many studios saw videocassettes as a threat not a revenue stream.

Well, we've been battling forever, and first wound up with the GOUT and now this. It's just hard not to finally just throw up my hands.
Never give up!

Yeah, and look what happened to his career. Look what happened to the Library of Congress. There's a point when things go from Rocky to Raging Bull and I'm just standing there getting beaten to prove something to myself that isn't true. We're done guys. I wish it wasn't so, but every time it looked like we had a chance, we didn't. First the GOUT, then the Blus, then Congress itself. The bridges are burned.

Did every one give up there alcohol when Prohibition was past?

Just because you can’t get the OUT legally its not going to go away.

Sore any one came make alcohol and there it only a limited source of the OUT.

No I am not promoting Piracy. And I am not suggesting we sell OUT bootlegs.

But the OUT must be saved.

We're welcome to try, but fan-preserved version aren't going to be remembered decades down the road.

And of course the quotes I provided from Lucas's speech to Congress were dismissed as not applying to him or his films.  Because, you know... reasons.

I'm going to play devil's advocate here and say that Lucas was against colorization which was typically done by a studio rather than the director or anyone previously involved in the film. Making that speech is 100% consistent with Lucas' insistence that movie studios are completely awful. It's not as hypocritical as one might think, simply because he doesn't attack anyone who makes changes to their own movies (as far as I'm aware.)

Lucas is the studio.

IT'S MY TRILOGY, AND I WANT IT NOW!

"Yeah, well, George says a lot of things..." a young 1997 xhonzi on RASSM

"They're my movies." -George Lucas. 19 people won oscars for their work on Star Wars (1977) and George Lucas wasn't one of them.

Now I understand why some fans want the original cuts of the original trilogy because that is the versions fan's grew up with and it's a very good point. Now hear me out before you start with calling me a troll and this and that. I know in the past I have said some things that have made people on this forum upset. I understand the whole point of this site to get the original cuts of the original star wars trilogy on blu-ray or whatever the next format comes along. Now I do like the original cut's of the original trilogy but my preface are the special editions because those are the ones I saw in the theaters and their is nothing wrong with that.  And the blu-ray's of the star wars saga are the best the films and ever looked and sounded some my not agree but that is for anyone to judge.
