Old Special Effects Vs New Special Effects

I want you to voice your options about the old special effects vs The new special effects. I like the new effects but the old effects are still timeless in movies like the indiana jones, back to the future ,and star wars trilogys.

I think we had a thread about this a while back, but whatever.

Old ones definitely win for me. They look much more realistic, because when models, miniatures, puppets, and so on are used, they exist, they're actually there (even if they're superimposed into the scene or whatever). When it comes to CGI/new effects, CGI is fake. If it's not done right (and it usually isn't) it looks pretty cartoonish and fake looking. It's especially noticeable when actors have to react to CGI and walk around CGI sets and stuff. It looks much better and more realistic when actors are on real sets with real people (even if those people are in masks/suits to look like aliens or whatever, they're still there and actors can react to real things).

That's one of my major complaints about the prequels. Lucas doesn't give the old stuff a chance anymore, he practically uses CGI for everything. I just don't get why he doesn't use the best of both of them instead of packing the prequels with often fake-looking CGI.

You must be joking nothing could ever beat the old style SFX,buy or rent 20.000.000 miles to earth and you'll see better than digital

I am a fan of Ray Harryhousans work. It was great at the time but today digital is best. Problem with models and stop motion is that it just doesn't move right. It always has a jerky look to it. Digital always feels so much more natural. True a still model image will probably outmatch most (but not all) digital images but in movement digital is always better.

well, ok in that one instance, cgi is better. but for everything else puppet Yoda is better by a mile.

i dont see how yoda as small as he is has the power in his legs to jump around like a damn frog...
Lucas totally killed the honor that Yoda had in him...

so ya...

I prefer most old-style effects. There are exceptions, but only some.

With old-style effects there is a level of tangibility. The object is/was there. With computers, its far more difficult to have that same effect. Sure you can have a person stand-in, like in the case of Jar-Jar, but its not the same.

The effects of 3PO falling, then flying in that droid factory looked, to be honest, cheap. If they had actually dropped a 3PO suit, it would have looked better.

Its like the difference between a live-action movie, and a cartoon. CGI is just a really, really high-tech cartoon. EP1 is like Who Framed Roger Rabbit (allusion here, which had in it a Star Wars actor).

Funny you've said that. Has anyone seen the Episode 1 behind the cameras documentary, back when it was released, in 1999? I remember hearing the ILM animators talking about Jar Jar and other CGI characters, and saying "We don't want a 'Roger Rabbit' effect on these characters. We don't want that. We wan't people to belive these characters are really there."
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

Im afraid they did. Say what you want about Jar Jar being annoying but he was incredibly realistic. Same with all those droids, monsters, and sets. You often forget there digital. They look great. Attack of the Clones looked even better. Im sure Episode 3 will look even better then that. Yoda fighting was the best scene in the history of movies. Growing up with this character always finding his power so mysterious and then seeing him jump out and totally kick ass was the best. Its sad that future generations probably won't appreciate Yoda fighting as much as I did. It is a truely great cinematic momment. Yoda da man.

go jjimbo go its good to see someone with the same opinion as me. Poeple that think that pupets are better then todays CGI need to start accepting change. i willl admit some stuff looks great like minas tirth in LOTR but on the whole CGI worlds mercals. overall there is just no agruement against it CGI on the whole IS better and more cost effective then puppets, hands down.

that right there totally ruins your whole argument... because i think i speak for everyone when i say that not only was it not the best... it was probably the worst...

does anyone else think jimbo works for Lucas and just comes on here to try and damper our spirits??
my thoughts exactly...

It was a stunning fight scene.
But its not the best.

Watch the original Robin Hood. Flynn vs. Rathbone was classic.

I still think both ESB and ROTJ had much more "intense" lightsabre duels and they werent even as fast paced as the prequels...
shows that speed, spins and flips dont outmatch the dramatic outcome of having to kill your father...

My favorite Lightsaber duels

1. Yoda vs Tyrannus
2. Vader vs Luke (The Empire Strikes Back)
3. Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon vs Maul
4. Anikan and Obi-Wan vs Tyrannus
5. Vader vs Luke (Return of the Jedi)
6. Vader vs Obi-Wan

Jar Jar stinks may have looked realistic to YOU but not to me. To me he looked like a fancy cartoon, and so did all the other CGI crap.

1 Vader and Luke (ROTJ)
2 Vader and Luke (ESB)
3 OBi and Quigon and Maul(TPM)
4 OBi and Vader (Star Wars)
5 Quigon and Maul on Tat(TPM)
