I like "Feel, don't think. Use your instincts." Maybe he could say "Anakin" before that to get his attention.

Alright, that's going in I think. I like it.

Also, what if the new power source was a fragment of the Star Forge from KOTOR? Then it gives some context of what it can actually do, and why the TF would want it (build an unstoppable droid army.)

Yes please!
As long as that part of it is explained in the movie. It would be cool to maintain that the reason the Feds need Maul is so that he can operate it with the dark side, or that he's somehow deceiving them so he can take it later.

Are the cutscenes in HD?

Im afraid the quality differences might be too obvious :/

Are you suggesting Star Maps on Tatooine and Coruscant? :O

Or putting the actual Forge in an opening sequence, or in the final battle?

I don't want to use any KOTOR footage, just use the name of it and have it mentioned as the new power source. Then there's a bit more to it instead of "hey, they found a random power source"

If you pull this off, it would be very interesting to me. I agree with what was said, it needs to be explained well enough so there is no need to actually know anything about KOTOR.

Dont recall anything specific, but Neeson said a lot of Jedi-ish things when he did Qui Gon in the "Clone Wars" cartoon.

Spence, just a random thought about the 'new power source'.  Make sure you keep it as one of those MacGuffins that the film snobs are always talking about.  The characters need to care about the power source, but the audience needs to care about the characters.

Exactly. That's part of the point, to give the heroes/villains a bit more purpose.

In the crawl, it's going to say basically that when the Republic realizes what the Naboo have found is part of the Star Forge, they begin to discuss destroying it. The Federation wants it so they can build a giant droid army quickly and accelerate their plans to rule the galaxy.

Something I'd really like to do, but I'd need some help with, is have Maul's death tied to the Star Forge's destruction. I was thinking if when he falls down the pit, a big explosion of force energy (a la ROTJ) could shoot out. Then maybe some shots of the big power columns where the light "dims" to sell the effect.

I'm worried this thing is getting too ambitious, haha.

i wonder if the star forge plotline could eventually tie to the death star?

Remeber when I said I thought it was getting too ambitious? :)

I do want a little bit of a call back to the Emperor's death in ROTJ though, I think that would be cool.

mans reach exceeds his imagination! so ... the only thing that can destroy the powersource is a falling dark jedi?;)

yes.

and the only thing that can defeat the empire are little fucking teddy bears.

Some ideas for Episode 1:

Trimming the entire Tatooine sequence should mean having each scene propel you into the next one. As released, the movie just toddles along with just a shade more direction than if it were completely random.

It boils down to a few sequences:

--Finding a hyperdrive at Watto's

--Finding cover from the storm/meeting Skywalker family

--Getting ready for the pod race

--The Pod Race

--Collecting everything so the Queen can leave Tatooine

--Fighting to escape Tatooine

Looking at each of these sequences-- man, they drag on and on. One thing I notice during these sequences is that the tension is really low until Darth Maul shows up.  Another thing is that Getting ready for the pod race seems to take forever.

So I want to suggest a couple things:

What if you had Darth Maul arrive during the sand storm? The darkness under which he arrives would match visually and actually be more interesting if a steady HOWLING WIND sound effect was laid over it.  Then his seeking probe droids could be cut in among the following scenes keeping the sense of tension higher.

Second, I want to suggest cutting a lot of the pod-race prep. There is a really natural and cool cut suggested by the footage: when Annikan gets his pod racer going for the first time and sits in it yelling "It's working!"... the natural next image would be the swooping in shot over the crowd at the race. Nothing happens in between that matters.

What, you say? What about Watto and Qui Gonn deciding to gamble over the boy slave? Unnecessary, I say. If we don't see it ahead of time, it would be revealed when Qui Gonn goes to collect his stuff from Watto. It would actually be, imho, a nice surprise added to a script starved for surprises.

Sorry for the long post. These ideas may seem to bring up problems. I have thought out solutions, but I'll spare you for now.

^I've been playing around with a rough edit of TPM for awhile now, and I used that same idea about Maul arriving during the sandstorm to help speed things up as well and I think it works quite well as a means of speeding up the Tatooine sequences.

Speeding up the entire movie was what I wanted to do, and to that end also cut out the original meeting with Wato - I cut from them entering Tatooine to the Feds talking to Sidious then back to Qui Gon on the radio to Obi Wan asking if there is anything on the ship they can barter with.

I also cut the entire opening down so that it went straight from the crawl to the Fed ships landing on Naboo and heading straight into the palace, but I don't think that idea would be useful for this edit, since the Fed stuff at the beginning is needed with the new Star Forge stuff Spence is adding.

In any event, I'm really looking forward to this edit :D

Hey Spence, just had a thought, not sure if you'll like it or not. But when Maul's lightsaber gets cut in half, could it then not work at all? Maul's death has always bothered me, as has his lightsaber working when chopped in half. Would it be possible to roto out his lightsaber, have him do a couple of back flips avoiding the lightsaber and then have Obi chop him in half?

Would seem a better death to me, and make Obi seem a lot more skilled, given his Master got killed, but then he kills Darth Maul...

Just a thought!

Along those lines, I thought it would be cool to have Darth Maul not get cut in half and instead just impaled. It leaves his fate more open, i.e. turning to Greivous in ROTS. Also, I felt it was just there to really exclaim that Maul is dead and kill any ambiguity, which I personally feel would have been good.
