I gave up the thought of purchasing this one after I saw the quality of a tape I tried to digitize yesterday, I tried it on three different players and the results were really bad. I'm afraid I simply do not have the proper equipment for doing this kind of preservation work worthwhile.

Can you be more specific? It sounds like the tape might be the problem if you've tried three different VCR's.

The tape I tried with is in great condition and almost never used, it was a tape containing old Super-8 footage transferred professionally that I have wanted to preserve for a long time. I tried another tape as well with the same results, the three VCR's I used aren't the best players out there but in the end I think it is the DVD recorder and its combfilter that is at fault as it produced a very unsatisfactory picture. :(

What DVD recorder do you use?

Wish I had a multi-standard VHS player to help you out with.

It's a fairly new Panasonic model a friend of mine owns, don't know exactly which model it is without checking. I recently captured my Technidisc LD of SW on it and I wasn't satisfied with the results on that one either. It would certainly be nice to have a recorder in your caliber but it also seems hard to find recorders accepting both NTSC and PAL. Is there JVC models out there that can handle both?

I haven't seen a multi-standard DVD recorder. Maybe in the professional broadcast world they exist, but they would be pretty expensive.

They exists, his Panasonic which is a PAL-model and not that expensive can record both PAL and NTSC signals and I think many Pioneer models also can. Thanks for the link, wonder if it can handle NTSC...

When you only have so few tapes to digitize like I do, maybe it would be more worth it to send them in to get it done professionally after all.

This would appear to be one of those weekly magazines one would find  tucked into Sunday newspapers. People didn't save these as often as regular magazines.

Spended some time yesterday on the shot with the rat and SEN getting scared to eliminate the dirt, it's tedious and slow work and my old computer isn't really suitable for this, I will see if I can sucessfully accomplish this on a short sequence before deciding if it's worth it or not, if not and I leave the dirt in, it will at least be less noticable with the UK transfers better framing in these parts.

Did someone here bid on that magazine already? I'd like to avoid a bidding war. ;)

Damn, this work in aftereffects is tiring, I'm actually considering just splicing in the UK transfer and be done with it. I'll take a short break and work on the DVD opening titles and see how I feel about it when I come back to it...

I will try to post some test samples of the degraded opening titles soon to hear your thoughts on it, hopefully the results going from DVD to LD will be ok...

Worked and experimented with the opening titles yesterday and the results were pretty good, have a few more things I would like to test out before posting samples.
