Yes, we've seen it happening before: Kill Bill was delayed at the last minute 6 times, and Woody Allen movies usually take 2 years to get here. Bowling for Columbine was originally shown at only one theater once, and re-released in about... 10 screens a few months after the 2003 oscars.
