A buddy of mine on Jedi.net told me about this project and I am very happy to see Star Wars given justice by an appreciative fan. Thank you.

OK, guys, once again, I have bad and good news about the matte paintings from the Blu-Ray - it seems I will only be able to use one of them for SW. The good news is... well, see for yourselves. (Mirror here)

The unfortunate thing is that the goodness of the good news makes the bad news even worse, because I thought the 2nd matte of Falcon in the DS hangar (you know the one that didn't look all that great in v1.0) was there but it turns out it's a completely different matte, which was never used in the film :-(

Hi Harmy,

A friend of mine had a party on Saturday night.  We were watching the A New Hope Blu-Ray.  After we watched it, I asked them to pop in your Despecialized Version of Star Wars.  Everyone was captivated.  I heard comments like "why didn't we watch this one instead" and "that's how I remember Star Wars"

Thanks so much for this project and all your hard work.  It has really enerigized my own interest in the franchise.

VERY well done.. the noise and shake really sell the whole thing, plus the quality is fantastic! (yeah, I know, I sound like McCallum :D).

Do you have an overview of which matte paintings you're missing?

Author

Hi Harmy,
the enhanced quality of the Mos Eisley Shot is really worth it! ..
And the enhanced shaking and grain make it even more part of the picture..
There is still some kind of movement, the matte is missing in relation to the other shots, but I can't really say, what it is.. seems like the "normal" shots have also some kind of inner tiny deformations, while they are running.. maybe it could even have more shake.. but otherways, it's getting very close!

Does the gout have the same shaking?

Well, the GOUT has in general a lot of noise, grain and shake over the picture, since it hasn't been cleaned up like the new editions. And so the mattpainting also shakes a lot... more ore less like the rest of the film.. but maybe even a bit more, because of the photographic progress involved in an vfx shot..

But those were the shakes, that the cleaned up GOUT tried to get rid of, because its very annoying in the GOUT DVDs.. but if you are too good in cleaning up grain and shake you end up with a very flat and "fake" looking picture..

So if you just take a still picture with no movement and edit it into the film, it might be the right shot from back then, but it does look completely wrong, more like a new computereffect.. the original matte might have looked fake in the first place, but at least it had "film"-life..
So ideally the still matte has to be matched to the appearance of the surrounding picture, so it won't feel wrong and out of place if you watch it...

And if GOUT pictures are used, I believe it's still more preferable to use a shot with movement (even if nothing "happens" in the picture), then just using a still from this shot.. or a new combination.. there has been put a lot of effort in recreating some shots, like the flight into mos eisley, but the new compositions make it a new shot, that might look like the old one, but it's something else.. maybe I'm overly critical with that, but that's just my 5 cent. ;)

I was referred to tehparadox.com by a friend to give this version of the original trilogy a try.  All I can say is THANK YOU!  This is how I remember Star Wars.  No Episode IV, no Greedo shooting Han, no Jabba, etc.  THANK YOU!

Just finished watching this Despecialized Edition, and all I can say is "Wow." You probably realize this, but for curiosities sake I did an AB with the V3 and the regular SE, and yours blows them both away! You can see things in your edit that are not visible in the other versions. The clarity and color is awesome! Why doesn't Lucas hire you?!

Thanks so much! This is the perfect Original Trilogy! :)

LMAO! now we are comparing my "preservation\restoration" of a 4:3 LB DVD to a "fan edit" of the 2004 SE HD broadcast stream? my God some of you here really need to get a grip on what a "fair" comparison really is, so if you think this is fair, please explain how it is? there is a huge difference in the sources and what we(Harmy and I) are trying to do, mine are original, his are not, and never will be, that is a fact, now I am not trying to take away from his efforts(Harmy) because what he does is pretty cool if you are into that, but when I read comments\comparisons like this, you are taking away from my efforts.

I actually thought Harmy would have commented on this ridiculous comparison himself but he must not have seen it yet or cares.

Yeah, DJ's right that it's definitely an unfair comparison. On the other hand, as we're both working towards very similar goals, I'm afraid that it's inevitable that people will compare the projects. Go back and re-read the Aluminium Falcon's reviews of project Blu, he compares it to DeEd too.

For the average person (ie not someone who cares about matte lines) visiting this forum for the first time, both DJ's and Harmy's work seem like good options, because they want the original trilogy and they're told those two are the best. They're told to check out both, so a comparison is inevitable. But for those people, Harmy's will probably win, because it's inherently higher resolution (finer detail).

And then they'll say so, because they don't understand the different goals. And then DJ will post, and then Harmy will agree.

Ha-ha, 'tis true.

DJ, you shouldn't feel like you need to respond to those kinds of posts.

Plus one project is a preservation\restoration, and 1 is a fan edit, and not to mention the huge differences in the sources used, most of the long time members will not even compare these 2 because of the huge differences(they already know the sources used very well) it is mostly the newbies, I will just add this thread to my "stay out of" list now because these comments just really get me going lol, and I have said this in a PM to h_h already today, it seems that most people nowadays want these HD fan edits over any preservation projects anymore anyways, so it is all good, that is why I am in no hurry to upload my BD Set at the moment, but I myself prefer the real deal lol, these are close, but no matter what is done to them, these are not OT, fact is fact.

OK, Harmy I will leave your thread now, I will try not to post in it anymore lol, unless provoked that is.

This isn't a preservation project?  It's in the wrong forum if that's the case.

How can it be, it is editing clips and such from different sources into the 2004 SE HD broadcast, which is the predominant source, so this is a fan edit to me, so I often wondered what you said myself a few times, this is not a preservation of the GOUT or an LD or VHS for that matter, it is a fan edit of the SE to try and resemble the OT.

Depends on how you define preservation. Harmy's DEs don't preserve any particular release of the films literally, but they intend to do their best to preserve the content of the original versions in the highest quality they can. It's exactly what most people want in a preservation, even if it isn't really a preservation.

Of course, I guess you could also say that DJ's not preserving any particular release of the films as he's editing the GOUT... from a certain point of view.

Perhaps Harmy's work, as well as Hairy Hen's, are best described as "Recreations".

lol, how did I know you were going to have a comical response, how am I editing the GOUT? what other sources are going into it? pray tell please? again there is a huge difference of what is going on here, lol and this isn't even from a newbie, what a joke.

plus this section is preservations and "other fan projects" so it is covered.

In the strictest sense, a preservation of the GOUT would be a rip of the DVD, available online after GOUT discs are no longer available in stores. It would preserve the GOUT release for future viewing, and nothing more. By that very, very strict definition of a preservation, V3 is not a preservation, because it is not an exact copy of the GOUT. It has been resized/cropped so as to appear correctly on widescreen TVs, and the colors have been fixed. Now, I think we all agree that this was a really great idea, because it puts the GOUT looking a whole lot more like the theatrical version, as it should, but it doesn't meet the strictest possibly definition of a preservation.

Thankfully, we're not using that strict of a definition of "preservation" on this forum.

This was what I was getting at.

Yes, but you called it a fan edit.  And don't get me wrong, as I love fan edits, but to a lot of people that term carries a negative connotation due to a (sometimes justified) perception of sloppy work.

Very cool, you guys are so great it is not even funny, and my project is more of a "Custom" job, not a preservation for the video, but I DID preserve some of the audio options myself, but whatever.

SO what frink, I call it a fan edit, to me that is what it is, it is editing parts from other sources just exactly like a fan edit, here is something new, why don't you call it what you will, and I will call it what I will, sound good? WTF!

Can we put threads on an ignore list or only members?

It's called "don't click on it."  ;-)

Anyway, I agree, we can all call it what we like.  I think we've made our points.
