Edit: Damn you, multiple tabs!!!
is there anything that charts how may blu ray players are sold each year? that would give us a better idea on how many households have a blu ray player (and yes, I would include PS3). My nieghbor has a home theatre in box combo that includes a blu ray player. if they make these combo packages with blu ray, then you can't really say blu ray is just for the niche high-end market.
it didn't have the greatest launch because of recession and HD-DVD war. I was able to snag a samsung bdp1000 in Jan 2008 for only $120 plus 5 free movies. most players at the time were $400 - $800!! it was immediately after warner bros said they were going with blu ray exclusive - i knew then the war was over.
I think the way some people describe blu ray as a niche format can be more applied to home 3D.

The only thing I dislike about blu-rays is they plaster the Sony logo EVERYWHERE... did you ever see a giant DVD banner at the top of every case the way you do for those Blus? It's pointless and just annoying.

It's also one of the best examples of irony I've ever read.
Just figured I would post this link. I can't believe George Lucas would actually say “Grow up. These are my movies, not yours.”

It strikes me as strange (even completely ironic) that there are people in here that don't care for Blu-ray. This seems like a forum where everyone is FOR movie preservation and the "best quality" in film. I've been for both for years.
I wouldn't be surprised if this were the general public, but this a film forum. Isn't it?! I bought my first HDTV at 22 in 2005. I recently bought one of the new 46" 1080p Aquos that has a higher contrast ratio than a freak'n plasma. The difference between Blu-ray and DVD on it is night and day. It's not even close.
When it comes to audio, I'm surprised by any real film fan that doesn't have at least 5.1 in their home. I bought my first 5.1 system when I was 18 and working at a tshirt company for $7 an hour.
Having 5.1 has been a necessity since I've been old enough to afford my own surround sound (17). So I'm with you there.
I don't have a BluRay player for one reason. It's honestly not much of an improvement. Don't get me wrong, I notice a difference, it's just that 1080p isn't all that good when I can down... um... AQUIRE 4k rips of Tron Legacy and others.
And to be honest I told myself I wasn't going to get a BluRay player until STAR WARS came out. And since STAR WARS was released in 1977 and all I've been offered is some direct-to-video remake from 2011 I see no point in investing in Blu-Ray.
Now if GreenRay comes out in a few years offering 4k resolution then I will buckle down and buy one. But not until then.

I don't buy many movies these days (I've turned psycho-minimalist after always owning too much stuff), but I fuggin' love the Blu-Ray format. For movies I'm not ridiculously attached to, I totally dig HD Netflix streams. But for those few films (Blade Runner, sigh, Star Wars, etc.), it's so great to see such amazing presentation. In the right hands, Blu-Ray is the shiz.
On another note, I'm happy to finally post this. After all my turmoil getting the Harmy and dark_jedi edits of these films, I thought I'd show my gratitude by making an awesome box set for myself and a couple of friends, so they can appreciate the efforts of the fan community. If Lucasfilm won't put these on my shelf, I will!

I think those people are largely in a minority, whether it is on a film forum or just in the general public. If you can't see the difference between a DVD and a Blu-ray you need your eyes checked. Even on a 21" monitor the difference is night and day unless you are comparing a poor example of a BD, in which case I would agree the difference is more subtle.
I think the best educational tool is actually broadcast HDTV, like sports and the like. You can switch from one channel showing it in SD to another channel showing it in HD and it's like two different shows. When my family members did that, just by chance, the true quality of HD hit them (and HDTV broadcasts usually aren't good compared to BDs).
I've got 1 (count 'em) BD!!
Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon.
I literally don't have the cash to spare at the moment as my girlfriend lives in a different country and most of my disposable income is used visiting her.
There won't be any wide-reaching resolution upgrade after HD/BD. The technology exists now--there are 4K projectors. The problem is that it outstrips the limits of what the human eye can resolve. When you are dealing with a 36" monitor (sort of the "average" size now?), there simply isn't detail that the human eye can easily measure at such low screen size. You'd have to take a magnifying glass to see the difference.
On a large screen--not a 48" screen but like a fifteen-foot-wide projection screen--you may notice an improvement, but it won't significant enough to upgrade. Only theatre owners will benefit from 4K and even now a lot just stick with HD and 2K projectors because they can't see the expense in getting 4K ones, which have existed for some time. I think eventually all theatres will have one 4K (and maybe in some decades 8K?) deluxe screen for large-format stuff like IMAX or whatever becomes it's equivalent, but I just can't see anyone putting that in their homes. It would be a waste of money.

I sort of understand that cthulhu1138.I'm a gamer too, so HD has been the norm for me since 2005. I just can't imagine going without it for so long. I wouldn't be able to do like you are. Supposedly super-hd will arrive around 2020-2025.
That seems like a long wait even when I've been all HD for 6 years now.
It's not that I don't notice the difference. I do. I just don't see 1080p as that much of a leap forward.
HD television looks 1000x better that old crappy analog TV but when it comes to DVD I just don't see enough difference to go out and buy a BluRay player.
Everyone says if you sit really close to the screen, you can see the difference. But seeing how I never do that...
Aw' Hell, I'll get one for my birthday in November. You guys haveconvinced me.

I don't have a BluRay player for many reasons. I do not want to torcher my self! If blu ray is so much better than DVD Than it would be torcher ever time I had to use DVD after getting accustomed to blu ray. And even if I had an the $$$$$$$$$$$ to buy all the BluRay movies I ever wanted. I still would not be able to fined over have the movies I now have on DVD. And even with DVD I still every now and than have to go to VHS for movies that do not have DVD’s. I do have a HD LCD TV but it is a 32” 7:20P and with up scaling and the right settings I can make the GOUT look slightly better then one of those old SD Projection TV’s. The reason I got the HD LCD TV was because, I hade always wanted a big screen tv but in the small room I had I could only put a 20” 4:3 CRT. And will Letterbox on a 20” 4:3 looks like… will you know. I do have 5.1 surround sound. Well 5.0 surround sound I cant have a sub woofer in the building I live in.
Something else to bear in mind when discussing how big the leap from DVD to Bluray is - some TVs/players have better upscalers than others.

I remember the good old days of last week, when this thread was about Star Wars...
*swoon*
One last thing. I remember seeing a split screen comparison of DVD and Blu ray in a store. I know fore shore they did there best to make the DVD look its worst. But to me the blu ray was almost to clear. With such a hi resolution you could have seen every things Even things that you should not see. Like strings making people fly or mat lines.

Some threads just get hijacked, 1 of mine did recently, so I just went ahead and changed the thread title for them, so I will just make a new thread when I have something to add or report.
Obviously I don't mind a little deviation from the topic but this is just getting silly. I'm sure a DVD vs. BR (:p) thread in another section of the forum would be better for this discussion.

Watch your fingers!
Um...on topic...well if Star Wars were properly released on the discs made with blue lasers now replacing DVDs, I would be motivated to get a player for such discs. Since they weren't, I'm not. Maybe I should also go ahead and find those 2006 DVDs.

Good luck. Amazon stopped selling them so I hear. But yeah, back on topic... The only movie out of the six that looked really good was TPM.
And as far as ANH goes, you can really tell the color timing is off during the shootouts. In the original versions the screen would flash red, now I get these cringe inducing purple flares going off.
You all might not have noticed, but your brain did. :)
