The jump in quality is less significant for dvd to blu than it was vhs to dvd. I know plenty of people, young AND old, who claim they can't see the difference at all.
Don't forget that when we made the change from VHS to DVD, we didn't have flat screen TVs with dedicated upscalers. That's not to say you don't have a valid point, but it's a little unfair to draw the conclusion that Blus aren't inherently that much better than DVDs.
DE
After going back and forth on deciding weather to buy the set or not I finally did. I never bought the prequels on DVD and I wanted the special features. (I can somewhat enjoy the prequels)
I think the quality on these blu's are kinda horrible. I spot checked TPM, ESB and ROS. TPM was worse than I expected it to be, it mostly looks very soft, like someone had smeared something over the picture.
Empire while everything is slightly sharper than the DVD, still looks unimpressive, not only do the colours look like the DVD, you can definitely see frozen grain artifacts in scenes. Especially on Hoth, looks very bad.
Sith faired better overall, but I disagree with saying the transfer looks anywhere near as good as Avatar. All the composting with the actors looks much worse than I remember, they dont even look like they are really in the enviroments most of the time. Interior CG etc looks really bad and dated.
Overall the transfers should be far better than these. I will enjoy sifting through the special features though. Can you choose to watch the SD features without that border?
