New petition...for redoing the special editions

*sighs* If we are going to be stuck with the SE then they might as well look good. So can we ask George to redo all the CGI sequences with the most modern state of the art technology? Jedi Rocks needs some serious updating! How about throwing in some B-wing sequences during the Battle of Endor? How about having the Ewoks morph into bad ass killer ape like creature when the go into battle? Can we get Mark Hammil to come in and redo his "No!" when Kenobi is killed so it sounds more like Vader (it's called foreshadowing people - look it up!)

That's the worst idea I've heard in.....................................................a long time.

Nooo...NOOOOOOOOO!!!

How about getting them to get the colour correction etc. correct first. Since most of the issues from the DVD weren't corrected, and they said they were, they should issue a recall/replacement. At least for Ep.4

If you're joking, then it's a pretty good one!  If you're serious, then this - on my 5-year anniversary as a member of this forum no less - may indeed be worthy of my very, very first - facepalm.

Of course I'm serious. All the changes I put in the original post would be great! Imagine some stormtroopers getting ripped in half by giant ape creatures! And Luke has to have a different "no!" because it has to be like poetry and "rhyme".

Ok, I'm sold.  I'd also suggest the first sequel (ep.7) be titled "Poetry of the Midichlorians" and show us peace in the galaxy with lots of Ewoks, and bring back Carrie to sing the Life Day song in surround sound.

Seriously for two seconds (leaving our mission statement to one side) the SEs should be preserved somehow in all there forms but if George is to keep doing this shit again (and lets face it he will) the very least he could do is do it well.

The various levels of scribble are a real miss match of nice 1970's models, mattes, puppets and masks with mid nineties CGI cartoon and a reverseable head mask, mid-naughties CGI cartoon and CGI scribbles of the decade, colours all over the place, previous imperfections pasted over rather addressed etc.

The net effect is a patchwork of bits and pieces poorly glued together that don't match.

He really should just start from scratch next time.

Script all these changes so they make sense, restore the original version and clean up all the matte lines etc and then put consistent new effects to blend in with the original material.

You know...like Adywan does.

An SE is not the same thing as the original version.

When I watch a film from a particular decade I expect to see the film for what it is but the SEs are looking like a once fine looking lady after way too many visits to a series of bad cosmetic surgeons.

I am serious about constantly improving the CGI shots in the SEs, and adding in the B-Wing sequences (which were only cut out due to green/blue screen issues caused by the shape of their design IIRC). Until Jabba in Star Wars looks like the Jabba in Jedi George should be constantly improving them. I would consider buying them (used of course) if he did this. I could put up with the changes if they at least looked good.

The scene where the Rancor picks up Luke always looked terrible. It always amazed me that he didn't try to alter that one.

You have it backwards. He'll want to make the Jabba in ROTJ look like the Jabba in TPM.

I know it man, but a guy can dream can't he?

Nah, he should just remake the OT, deep down that's what he wants.

But then all the good parts would be gone! That would be bad.

Oddly enough, I was logging in to start a thread about this exact thing.

Watching A New Hope, I was incredibly disappointed with the jump around in quality. And I completely agree.

I do NOT want any of the live action stuff refilmed (with the limited possibility of the initial 3P0, R2 scenes on Tatooine. The horrible color inaccuracies don't appear to be fixable.

But seriously, why not give us a version of the OT that looks totally modern. Bits and pieces of it already do, but parts of the film could be completely redone. By attempting to preserve some of the original special effects, Lucas is continuing to cheat himself of what he really wants: An OT that matches the PT.

Strangely enough, this alone is why the OUT is not being considered for release in any decent quality: Because George does not feel that enough has been changed to warrant viewing both versions of the film.

But imagine that that shot at the beginning of the Tantive 5 (That sticks out as a total eyesore versus the very much cleaned up Star Destroyer) was replaced with a RotS quality cgi version. That there are Tie Fighters added to the scene to make the battle bigger and more important. Imagine that some of the most dated ship interiors were replaced with a digital bluescreen, then replaced with the beautiful CG interiors we've gotten in the PT... I mean, look at that ugly brown door on the Tantive.

Now replace the droids in the JAWA transport with decent looking ones (get rid of the walking trash can, etc.) Repopulate the Cantina with new cgi creatures.

Anything that is not a physical main actor should be fair game to change up...

If Lucas sat down down, and put the OT in Post Production in the same way you would an unreleased film, and fixed it with modern effects the way you would a modern film, we would have something absolutely beautiful and amazing, complete with the performances that we all love.

And... with a totally altered film to show off, with a very very visible difference from the original... I think Lucas would release the OUT.

Preferred Saga:
1/2: Hal9000
3: L8wrtr
4/5: Adywan
6-9: Hal9000

One step at a time, this petition should be about getting the AotC teal shift applied to all the movies.

Change we all can teal in.

If someone made a serious petition asking for the 97SE to make its way to BD I think it would only undermine the efforts done by the OOT petition IMO.

Typical of fans complaining about something they can't have...for the sake of complaining. Some things are valid and worth complaining about, this is not one of them.

It'd be perceived as... NOW they're whining about bringing back the 97SE they hated so much. The next "logical" step is some nutjob making petitions to bring to whatever new format exists the 2004 blue tint versions AND the NOOOO 2011 BDs.

And honestly, who really misses those 97' versions? 2, 3 people? Not worth it and I personally, wouldn't support it.

The way I see it, there is ONE, real OT that should be made available in the newest and best possible format. Then there's all of George's alterations that, in fact hold little historical value and cultural impact if only for anecdotal reasons. So, if the OOT is available, whatever new stupid additions he comes up with and call it his true vision (at the time) it's fine by me. They've become nothing more than other versions of fan edits and if we talk about fan edits, I already have my preferred version and don't need any of the three versions faneditor George Lucas has come up with in the last 14 years.

Cause we're spinning our wheels in this thread.

We're saying the same shit we're saying in every other thread.

One person says "I like the SE's."

Another person says "The SE's suck."

The next person asks "Why won't GL release the OOT?"

Etc......same old thing over and over again.

Which sadly was not the point of this thread...

This was actually a thread saying "We want George Lucas to Totally Redo all special effects and scenery in the OT with the most advanced CGI available"

Which from what I've experienced isn't a very common thread in these parts :P

Wasting time and money has never been Lucas' style. In fact, although the effects were crucial, providing a majority of the film's evironments and many of its supporting characters, the director had little interest in overtaxing time and resources to achieve effects that were prestine. "I'm a strong proponent, for better or worse, of making a film that works," Lucas said. "I want the audience to be entertained by the film, moved by the film, educated by the film - but I'm not all interested in having it to be technically perfect, because technical perfection has nothing to do with telling a story.

This is probably THE reason why the changes in the updated editions are done half-assed, why the dvd/br product quality is half-assed as long as GL is in command. it's about telling a story.
