Hi,

does anyone know this tv documentary that was released to laserdisc in Japan?

http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/28211/SS098-0022/SFX-Special-(1984)

It’s without subtitles (!), featuring english audio (& japan audio).

According to the laserdisc database it features behind the scenes of ESB and ROTJ.

Someone sells it on ebay right now:

This could be a nice preservation project.

Has the star wars related content been preserved yet?

I have a taping of this from a Norwegian TV broadcast in 1988  (And a copy of the LD on it's way. Thanks for the heads-up).

I don't remember the specifics of the Star Wars clips, but there was a segment on sound design for ESB, IIRC.

Once I have the LD I'll do a DVD capture and share it here.

Not related to Star Wars, but related to this LD - anybody up for trying to obtain and rip any of the Japanese SFX Museum LDs which were done by the same company?

This site has them: http://www.urabanchou.com $40 each for volumes 1-3, $65 each for vol's 4 and 5.

I would be most interested in volumes 1 (Richard Edlund), 2 (John Dykstra) and 5 (models and miniatures).

I know others on this board have these laserdiscs, but they were talking about them 4 or 5 years ago.

Move along, nothing to see here.

I just got the laserdisc and am sorry to report there is NO behind the scenes footage from Star Wars. Nor is there any interview footage with anyone remotely involved with the production.

There are clips from Empire and Jedi used as examples of sound editing (the Ice hanger as the Snowspeeders take off for battle) and compositing (the speeder-bike chase).

The only FX-related snippet is a brief mention, by the narrator, that the background plates for the speeder-bike chase were shot on a steadycam by Garret Brown, but we knew that already.

I was going to do a DVD transfer of this, but found that my DVD recorder no longer locks on to an NTSC signal. It used to do it just fine.... *sigh*

I've uploaded an entry for this Laserdisc on my Star Wars on Video site (link in my sig) for anyone who wants to see the cover up close.
