I think an interesting phenomenon is probably revealed here...

The "everyone to the right of me is too far to the right and everyone to the left of me is too far to the left" kind of thing.

Or the "everyone slower than me is an idiot and everyone faster than me is a moron!" on the freeway kind of thing.

I hate the PT more than anyone I've met in real life.  But I don't think I hate it quite as much as a few of you here...  But I also consider those same people to be "taking it too far" which is probably how most of you on the meh list look at the rest of us on the "hate" list.

And all of you on the 'meh' list are pansies.

:)

Yeah, but that one's true.

Also...meh.

You can add me to the list of 'haters'. They are ineptly directed, hamfistedly-written cartoons that completely undermine the integrity of the OT.

There isn't one character that one can relate to or empathise with in the whole damn trilogy. They're simply not likeable. And all these 'mirrors' and 'rhyming schemes' Lucas blathers on about just show how deluded he is in his own belief that he can either write or direct.

I'm not even going to suggest they're a wasted opportunity. I couldn't care less about Vader's backstory or if he (shudders) built C3PO or not. Or bloody midichlorians.

If anything, I would have liked to have seen sequels...

I'd like to be listed as one of the fellow participants who are in the subcategory of those that choose the option of ignoring the existence of the prequel trilogy in the context of what I find pleasing with the rest of the Star Wars experience and the associated affiliated paraphernalia whether be it the voluminous making of books and specials or the handful of collectibles which adorn my shelves of baubles and tchotchkes.

Xhonzi, I don't agree with the "ignore" category. I mean, that is more of an action rather than an opinion. I ignore the prequels, but I still hate them. Like my ex-girlfriend(s).

Perhaps change it to "indifferent"?

If the OT never existed and we just had the prequels, i'd be indifferent.

But how things are, I hate them.  I have to admit I saw TPM a 2nd time, on dvd at a friend's house, just to give it another chance, but nope.  Still hate it.  Can't bring myself to watch the other 2 a 2nd time.

I saw each prequel in theatres multiple times.  I saw TPM 4 times in theatres! I will now go light myself on fire.

Its not a real outright hate, because at the end of the day, I still have my memories and feelings of the original trilogy, and the stylistic, acting, and story decisions are so contrasting that its pretty easy to just to place the films in discontinuity. I can still sit down and watch ANH, ESB, or ROTJ on VHS and love them. A few bad movies can't make enjoy them any less, no more than badly done Sonic games will take away my enjoyment of those of the 16 bit era.

No, what I feel towards the prequels is more of a quiet disappointment and sadness at what they could have been. Call it the writer's mind at work, but I can't help but look at so many elements of those movies as so much lost potential. Yeah, any films that came out were bound to have some that dislike it, but part of me does lament that of all the stories of the Republic and Anakin Skywalker we could have had, that's what we got.

It also has me feeling some pity for Lucas, as I think had he stepped away and let others in as far as working on the films, then maybe he wouldn't be dealing with quite such a mixed reputation and divisive fanbase. His frustrating decisions regarding the original trilogy restoration aside, its quite unfortunate that such an imaginative thinker and a guy who loved film so much will have a legacy written with a "yeah, but..." for all his cinematic achievements.

Put me down as a hater. But it's not molten-hot, seething rage; it's rather a quiet, discontented loathing. I thoroughly dislike those movies, and find nothing in them even remotely enjoyable. If there were some way to turn back time and ensure that they had never been made, I would be pleased.

no longer 'hate' the prequels.  won't watch TPM again, but could pop in AOTC and ROTS on a rainy day like a friday the 13th sequel.  better that than the transformer movies.

during the time they came out 1999-2004, i was angry at what i thought was blatant and obscene squandering of what could have been something wonderful.  I was disgusted at lucas' profound underacheivement and explotation of the OOT phenomenon and goodwill.  fans from the 70s and 80s know what im talking about  (for those that grew up with OT but too young to see in theatres, you truly missed a phenomenon that was one for the ages).

but im not angry anymore because its obvious that there never was a 'saga' and the PT was every bit as contrived as the rocky sequels.  and lucas is simply a very poor filmmaker.

So the films themselves I no longer hate.  But crap like Rick McCallum saying "we don't want to make the biggest movie of all time or the most special-effects laden film of all time.  Sure we want these films to be beautiful and have the best production design, but the most important thing is the story and characters".

Its like a baseball fan thats pissed about all the home run records being broken with guys taking PEDs.

click here if lack of OOT got you down

In practice, I just ignore them. I saw The Phantom Menace the day it opened, and I saw The Phantom Edit a few years later. Other than that, I have no interaction with it. I caught the other two movies a few times on TV so I'm more familiar with them; each one has a few charms, but not enough for me to seek it out or purchase it.

In theory, I simply hate them. They were terrible disappointments. They were terrible movies. Almost everything about them grates. They appropriated concepts from the original trilogy and misused them. They polluted the Star Wars expanded universe and fanbase. They even infected the original trilogy with Hayden and Naboo. They are vampires, mockeries of the original forms that pervert everything they touch.

I'll let you decide whether practice or theory is more important.

Exactly, I "hate" them and that's the reason I also ignore them.

yyyyyyeah but me down for "hate".

There was certainly no lack of trying on my part to "like" the PT when it was introduced.  I saw TPM 8 times in the theater before I said "thats it".  I tried to keep a positive outlook with thinking "ok, TPM sucked, but AOTC will be better".  Saw AOTC 4 times in the theater before I said "thats it". the same pattern continued with ROTS.  I agree with the "haters" posts here.
