Just found this nifty chart. Interesting stuff about speeding them up to cut down on production costs:

This reminds me of a rather insignificant change I found in RotS. I think there is new audio of the clone troopers shouting and barking commands as they repel down onto the platform where Obi-Wan is battling Grievous. Can anyone confirm this?

Argh! I've always thought that I saw the extended Biggs scene and this is exactly as I remember it. Somehow, I think I've seen this seen before, complete with the additional dialogue. I'd hate to think that I'm suffering from a grappling hook-esque syndrome... :-(

I don't get that- it's got the person walking past the camera like in the SE, but it's also got Red Leader talking about Luke's father (which I have also seen somewhere before) which they edited from the SE. So, the guy walking past the camera was always there? I just thought they added it in '97 to hide the edit.

And what's with the awkward insert shot with the fake 3p0 voice?

Nope. I definitely just saw it at my house on some sort of VHS or laserdisc. It is plausible that I could have seen it on some documentary on TV, but it would have to be in the last decade; nothing from the 80's. I do remember the scene looking like that, minus the interjected bit with R2D2 and 3PO; that surprised me.

I just went back and re-read your earlier post. I had the wrong scene anyway. I thought you guys were talking about the "I'm going to jump ship and find the rebellion" scene.

The did just add it to the '97. What you see moving past them on the deleted scene is just something cut out of the film (big black rectangle) not an added person. I wonder if they composited the guy into the original film of the scene for the '97 and now can't remove it, so they had to put that black film anomaly.

Is it possible you heard the original broadcasts?

You are not alone. This is exactly how I remember it from the movie I used to watch as a kid. I also agree with the Droids segment, it does NOT belong there, I think that's just another fuckup - they had this short segment of R2 and 3PO and they wanted to add it somewhere on the BluRay - and they edited it into an incorrect place

Ah well. Is this how you remember the scene Puggo?

YES!

I'm having a hard time considering this noteworthy. The scene was in the Special Edition. There is only one extra line here, and it was in The Making of Star Wars TV special from 1977. Ergo, the film material for the entirety of the scene has been around for some time, without even getting into the novelization.

Awesome!

Maybe this whole Blu-Ray fiasco is a blessing in disguise.

Save Star Wars is getting some of the attention it deserves, almost every media report on the matter has sided with the fans who want the theatrical versions preserved for posterity and made available, even the die-hard Lucas faithful have had their loyalty shaken, there have been boycotts, hugely critical reviews all over Amazon.com etc. etc.

Maybe Lucasfilm will finally sit up and take notice?

I just can't help the feeling that this whole Blu-Ray release is a really clever marketing scheme. It's SW on BD, so it will sell millions no matter what, but at the same time, it created this whole uproar, which by raising public awareness will increase the sales of the eventual OOT BD release by like 1000%...

That's the problem I have with the novelization, the storybooks, the numerous making of.. books, etc. I've watched the films so many times and read more about the making of the movies than I can remember, anytime I re-read the novelization or the script, I hear the actors voices performing the lines in my head. I believe I have seen all of these cut scenes in my mind, I just didn't necessarily use my eyeballs.

Did anyone else catch the new mumbled line from Obi Wan about Midichlorians in "Jedi"? When he's talking to Luke on Dagobah?

Preferred Saga:

3: L8wrtr
4/5: Adywan

I take back what I said before. Bill Hunt isn't a whore. Harry Knowles is a whore, an "it's Star Wars on Blu-ray!" whore. But then, I expected nothing less from the juvenile frat boys at Ain't It Cool News.

Of course I was right about virtually every reviewer out there using that false argument. And I was attacked for pointing this out...

Just took the time to take a look at the real bonus discs with a friend, who bought the set.

Didn't detect any Easter Eggs when going through the file structure of Disc 9 - the Documentaries.

The OT deleted scenes are muted from time to time without any technical reason. Sound is suddenly off completely in the middle of a shot and on after a few seconds again in the same shot. Technically the sound is either on the master tapes they used or not.

The only explanation I have is Lucasfilm is doing this on purpose to avoid fan films based on those scenes.

It's a shame that fans who are paying to watch those scenes are paying 100% but don't get 100% of their content.

Without any technical reason...except every technical reason. (it's workprint, the sound ain't finished)

The sound issues are legitimate technical things. Sometimes scenes are filmed without sound. Sometimes, parts of the soundtrack are damaged and have to be cut out. Sometimes parts of the soundtrack go missing after so many decades. And other times, during the rough cutting, editors will cut and splice unwanted segments out or leave silent certain sections that will require careful sound design later.

I bought the set. Yes, shame on me. Two weeks ago I was boycotting it, and I've been one of the most critical people for about a year. But I got it, I guess because it's Star Wars on Blu-ray. :P

I don't feel like giving LFL the money for these, but to be honest I watched ANH and I'm honestly very happy with what I got. I don't regret it at all. Maybe but it's because I've never seen the HDTV broadcasts before, but the PQ was very sharp to me and the black crush was better than on the DVD. Granted, it looked like they'd just brightened up the picture at times. For example, during the escape from the Death Star one of the TIE Fighter pilot's helmet is completely in shadow, but it's actually a flat grey. Audio quality was outstanding. Overall I was really surprised by how good it looked.

The worst (new) change of the Blu-ray for me actually was the rocks in front of R2, simply because it wasn't consistent at all.

Especially when I put my TV on warm, the colors seemed very accurate to the original film. I hate black crush and blue tint as much as anyone here, but there was no blue tint in what I saw and the black crush was only noticeable in a few scenes. With my TV settings the Death Star actually looked grey-green.

For TESB...I've got my own TV calibrations to completely remove the blue tint on Hoth and shift Vader's saber from magneta towards red.

I'm not sure what anyone's talking about when they saw the matte boxes are gone. They're more obvious than ever.

The deleted scenes are pretty bad. For anyone interested in recompositing it the original opening space matte painting is featured in HD.

After watching the Blu-rays I'm going to watch Harmy's despecialized versions. I honestly think that if Star Wars in 3D fails we'll get the OOT on Blu-ray in the next few years.

Indeed. On the subject of the sound, it has always surprised me that people were complaining about the sudden shifts in sound quality in ANH. Especially during Tarkin threatening Leia. Some of these lines have always sounded awful for some reason. Bad ADR, I guess. So ANH is definitely all over the place when it comes to the sound.

Luke's "It just isn't fair. Biggs is right, I'm never gonna get out of here" has always bugged me - that one sounds like it was recorded in a tin can.

I was at Walmart and I couldn't resist. I told myself I didn't need to get it yet, that I could wait until it was available used...

But I have a weakness for these Marvel films, and I think Kenneth Branagh did a great job in making one of the most ridiculous Avengers into on of the most human.

Wait, that's not what we're talking about here, is it? ;-)
