Been reading awhile...anyways...I own the big 7 disc set of the trilogy. I have a screenshot somewhere... From what I can tell though, it has pretty faithful picture but the brightness is turned up too high (I own the 1995 laserdiscs as well) and makes the blacks not as deep as the original discs. Otherwise, its a pretty decent way to watch the films and whatnot without worrying about laser rot. May have to snag a TR47 set just for convenience though...

I have a question about the Jedi Torrent and was wondering if anyone with it could check something for me? I have been downloading it and noticed that the Video_TS folder only has 10 files in it, but Hope and Empire's Video_TS folders each have 13 files in them. Does your Video_TS folder of Jedi have 13 files or 10?

Thanks.

Agreed. I cranked up the contrast about 20%, and the difference was remarkable. I'd post some comparison shots, but I don't know how to post images here.

10 is correct for Jedi.

Greedo shoots first? Not in my DVD player.

Thanks Obi-Wan Spicoli. I'm glad it is only 10. I was worried for a minute.

I forgot to ask if you could PM that link for the extras Torrent. That would be great.

Thanks.

Note - This is RE: a post over in a similar thread in the OT vs. SE section...

Greetings. First time caller, long time listener... wait thats something else entirely...

Anyway, Rowman mentions that he knows TR47 uses high quality media and he is not sure what media Rikter uses but has had no problems.

Can someone explain why the media quality matters? It seems to me that since we're talking digital - 1's and 0's - that as long the player can read those binary digits then the quality will be defined by those digits, not by the media.

I'm sure I'm wrong, but I'd like to understand why...

Hey guys. I've been downloading the OT on bittorrent, and I have all 3 movies, and 86.3% of the supplemental material, and it's stalled. All the seeders have gone. Could anyone who has this please reseed for a while? I'd greatly appreciate it.

There are only 4 peers on the network with no seeders at all.

Thanks for your help.

From what I understand, higher quality media does not necessarily give you better picture quality, but better burns. I've tried a few different brands of discs and the real cheapies have given me stuttering, freezing, or just plain unreadable DVDs. I've had my best luck with Fuji, TDK, Memorex, and Ritek. CompUSA brand was the worst. My DVD recorder wouldn't even recognize 6 discs out of a 10-pack in the last instance so I gave up on them.

I'm seeding the supplemental material now (and for anyone else interested, I'm also seeding the three movies).

Thanks Spyder X.

I've been trying to get a little bit of all the files all month, but have had to control myself because I've got download limits on my cable plan.

Can more and more people keep seeding these 4 torrents, coz after all we need to preserve this stuff.

Yes. Could we please get another seeder or two for the supplemental material? I've downloaded 2% in 12 hours and it was supposed to be finished today.....It's hard for one seed to supply 6 peers. Come on, guys. I know there are some more people here with the file completed.

I've seen this set. It is watchable, but you do have half a movie per DVD. If you're close to the TV, it doesn't look so good - there is a fair amount of ... movement (I don't really know what the technical term would be) in the screen. If you're across the room, it looks fine. Not impressive, but fine. I imagine it's better than VHS, but since I don't have access to the THX VHS set I can't say for certain. I've seen it, and I'm still interested in seeing the TR47 and possibly the anamorphic, to see if the quality is better.

The 7-disc job uses the artwork from the SE soundtrack CDs on the discs (providing a convenient Part I and Part II designation for each disc). Don't know which version of the laserdisc it is taken from.

I'm seeding the Extras. I only have 3.6% though. I'm sorry if that isn't much help. I'll continue to seed as my progress gets further, so hopefully that will help I hope.

This was mentioned by someone else long ago, but without much discussion. Is it widely accepted that the so called 5 star collection is the best available SE boots? Since Lucas is changing them again, I need to back up my SEs DVD as well. How do they compare to the common OT favorites like TR47? Are there others out there worth considering, and does anyone know what sources to go to for these?

The video and audio is taken from the 1995 Laserdisc releases. I talked with the author of the set and he used the audio and video from that set, and mixed in the audio commentary/extras from the definitive collection. I definitely know what you mean by the movement, it's from the contrast being turned up just a wee bit too high. The laserdiscs have a deeper color palette with none of that movement. They actually look pretty good for the Pre-DVD/HD transfer Lucasfilm had done.

I just received Rikter's TR47 DVD set today.

Here's my review:

Picture - From what I can tell, it is straight from the laserdiscs with no tampering done to it to improve it. Simply laserdisc. It can look at bit... pixelated if you are really nitpicky, but I have no complaints.

Sound - pure uncompressed PCM audio straight from the laserdiscs. Beautiful.

There are no menus, but that's worth it to have the best quality of the film itself.

There are chapter stops for your convienence.

I highly recommend this set to anyone who wants the DVDs and who doesn't have a widescreen TV.

My stance on revising fan edits.

That's gonna happen when you squeeze a 2-hour movie on a DVD-5. That being said, I've seen some prerecorded DVD-9s that can show the same thing. Mastering is everything. I was just barely able to squeeze ANH on a DVD-R using the 2-pass MainConcept MPEG encoder with a high datarate of of 8,000,000 and an average of 4,200,000.

MeBeJedi,

I don't use Main Concept, but I was wondering if it has a minimum bitrate setting and if you set yours to 0 or 2000. Also, do you use DVD-Lab? I was just wondering because I know some authoring programs hate it when the minimum is set to 0 and didn't know if DVD-Lab was one of them. I ask this because some people I know swear that using 0 is better than using 2000 for the minimum. Also, do you close your GOP or leave them open? Leaving them open is another thing that some authoring programs hate. That GOP setting is another thing that a lot of people debate on.

Thanks.

I'm currently sharing what I've got of all 4 torrents as much as I can, and yet it seems only a few are seeding the entire movies, and maybe even only two people are seeding the supplement material. For the last 3 hours I've gotten 17 MB of the supplement torrent at 1 KB/sec.

Meanwhile I've uploaded 1.3 GIG of "A New Hope" and only downloaded 200 MBs of it.

Come on guys, those that have it all, keep seeding it.

Cheers,

Can someone do me another favor and check out the size of the VOB file in the Video_TS folder of the Jedi Torrent named VTS_01_1? I'm at 71% of the download and for some reason, I cannot play that VOB, but I can play some of the others. The size of that file in mine is diplayed as being 1,048,382 KB. It appears to be 0.99 GB if you just let the mouse pointer hover over the file. Hopefully, the file isn't damaged. I make sure not to open the file while I'm downloading it because my Torrent Client has it locked where nothing can use it while it is.

Thanks.

I can't check the file size (I'm at work), but that is normal behavior for a torrent download. Unlike other methods of downloading (ftp, even kazaa etc) torrents do not download the data sequentially. They just grab whatever bits and pieces are available and put them in order later. Some torrent clients will allocate the disk space ahead of time though, so the file looks complete (1 GB) right from the start, but is filled with empty data. More often than not a file is totally unusable until the download is 100% complete.

So in this case the other vobs may have already downloaded the data at the beginning of the file that gives your dvd software information on how to play the file, but that one hasn't gotten the beginning data yet.
