I wonder if that New York Times critic was even around in 1977? It takes a brave man to say Star Wars wasn't very good, 34 years later! ;)

Where were you in '77?

Seems like they're missing a lot of points. :p But that's typical, really, especially in cases of outsiders looking in.

That was my thought exactly.  The larger (main) issue is that Lucas has been lying for decades and is in a position of power where he can dig his heels in and control what the outsiders are exposed to  - falsified information in keeping with his control-issue personality disorder.

With the exception of a select few not of my generation (Kaminski  and some of the members here), it's only the continually shrinking original fan base who even remembers what the original film & story were like in the 70s.

Lucas will continue to get what he wants (revised history) and I'll continue to be deprived of the one Star Wars film I want.  Truth be told, I fully expect I'll never be able to own a proper version of the film I watched as a kid in 1977.

*edit*

Considering I jumped ship in 1983 and have never seen anything post-83 OT, in the grand scheme of things I shouldn't be giving it a second thought. Truth is, it's really the dishonesty that drives me. I hate that he still continues to get away with the lies.  I hate that he has followers and apologists who have absolutely no idea what they're talking about.  They're just mindless drones, repeating whatever he tells them to say.  It's very depressing.

Even if he did release Star Wars77 properly, I'd just watch it once and go back to my thrice yearly listening of the NPR version.  With God as my witness, I like it much more than the 1977 film anyway.  I can't go back.

Since the m.o. is based on the idea that the pre-97'ers can piss off because there will always be new blood to replace them, it would be interesting to know what level of interest LFL considers big enough to keep going that way. They must have a rough number in mind, I guess using toy sales and the ratings for clone wars as the main barometer. But from the outside it's hard to tell what that level needs to be. Is the current status good enough? Or does it need to grow? Or maybe it can slip down to Star Trek 2003 levels and still be considered perfectly healthy by LFL?

Saw this yesterday in NYC, and on balance thought it was very good.

Incidentally, I think now I'm somewhat less perplexed at the box set's inclusion of otherwise baffling full-length "culture documentaries" on fan films and cosplay.  I figure that these are intended as the anti-PvGL, in that they present a white-washed, one-sided, officially permissible look at the fervor and devotion that PvGL fleshes out in a more balanced way.  Considering how long this doc has been featured on the festival circuit, I figure Lucasfilm wanted to address the same profound principle of SW's "participatory" appeal, without airing the legitimate grievances regarding the SE revisionism and PT brand-raep.

Oh, and I love that they included Wesley Willis doing "Jar Jar Binks."  The song's best couplet: "You are a stupid bastard.  You are an evil bastard."

I'm going to say not quite.  LFL has been working on collecting fans talking about the movies at Comic-Con and Celebrations for several years. (started soon after the launch of PvsG)   When they put out the result of those that will be the response to PvsG.  Figure 3D release or Celebration VI.

The blu-ray 501st doc is more a response to the 'Heart of an Empire' (2007) doc about one of the founders of the 501st community.

The 'Star Warriors' doc on the blu-ray i've only heard playing at Celebration Japan. (2008)  There were rumors of it possibly showing up on the History channel like the Star Wars Tech shows, but didn't happen to my knowledge.

They're doc will not feature one single negative thought about the movies or LFL in general, I'm sure.

A. So what.

B. Show me proof that someone could think negatively about the wonderful heart warming cultural phenomenon beloved by everyone, Star War.

I envy you.

Since they're like poetry, what with the rhyming and all, I find that I only need to watch three out of the six films.

I want the complete interviews of Kurtz, and Pollock and not the 3 minutes or so each of them got in the film while idiots who loved the prequels and morons in costumes got more time.

I've been trying to get my local independent theater to play it. The owner was all for it and has been working on booking it. Hopefully that'll come together but if not I'll just wait until the DVD release. I've just been really looking forward to seeing it.
