Info Wanted: Are the 1997 Special Edition releases preserved? — Page 2

I have readable copies of all 3 GKar discs. I'll gladly mail them to someone if they promise to upload them somewhere.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

I also have all 3 DVDs of the Gkar Edition and AFAIK they are readable. Not sure if there are any other errors, because I haven't watched them in years.

I think myspleen would be a better upload method, but I could also up them to the newsgroup later.

grisan, myspleen is an option as well. everybody can get an invitation if needed as we have one of the myspleen-admins here in the forums.

it's your choice

If anyone wants, I'll upload Empire to file-sharing websites when I get home tonight and then Return of the Jedi tomorrow. The advantage over the torrent is that you won't need to depend on seeders.

! Please do. That would make a nice complement to my Reivax.

To the OP: The broadcast versions are the best resolution you can get, but in turn you get that awful motion smearing. Your other option is LD preservation. However, if you still have a nice VCR the SE silver widescreen box can usually be had for under $5. They look quite nice for VHS even when compared to the LD.

I have ripped the Gkar DVDs to ISO with ImgBurn and I get these checksums (sfv format with CRC32):

; Generated by WIN-SFV32 v1.0
; (Compatible: Total Commander 7.55a)
SW_ANH_SE97_DE_EN_GKar.ISO B2F9F831
SW_ESB_SE97_DE_EN_GKar.ISO 0D4866CB
SW_ROTJ_SE97_DE_EN_GKar.ISO 616C7099

File sizes are:

SW_ANH_SE97_DE_EN_GKar.ISO    Size: 3.986.489.344 byte
SW_ESB_SE97_DE_EN_GKar.ISO    Size: 3.956.375.552 byte
SW_ROTJ_SE97_DE_EN_GKar.ISO    Size: 4.614.815.744 byte

If anyone can confirm these I will upload a torrent to myspleen. I skimmed through the DVDs and I didn't see any errors. ImgBurn also reported no CRC or reading errors.

Thanks to everyone who is volunteering to put these up for download! I have been looking years for these but haven't seen them around anywhere; I can't wait to get them

Thank you for starting a torrent for this Grisan. I am going to upload it to the file-sharing sites still, just for those who prefer not to depend on torrents. I've ripped the ESB disc with no read errors, ripping ROTJ now.

EDIT: I will either update my post or post again when each DVD is complete, then you can feel free to PM me for the links.

Thanks a bunch. I was looking for these about a month ago and couldn't find them anywhere. I really wish someone with the TB release would put them up (or better yet, the files for the original broadcast).

Ah cool. Thanks Falcon. Like many here, I've been searching for these for years! It's nice to see other versions of the 1997 SE preserved. I've always felt they've been under appreciated over the years.

All right. I finished uploading the G'KAR DVDs of ESB and ROTJ to multiupload. I've already sent out a few PMs to rockin, toho-scope, and joshdv. If you want the links to these, now is the time to start PM'ing me... I will be monitoring my PMs for the next 3 hours. After that, it may take me longer to get the links to you, but I'll do so within 12 hours of any PM that comes my way.

I did not upload ANH because I really believe the Reivax is much better quality. The G'KAR is heavily compressed video-wise because of so many audio tracks and you will see pixelization on bigger screens. However, if there is high demand for a file-sharing upload of ANH, I will do so...

By the way, if anyone has the Flunk or the TB releases, please do share them either by file-sharing site or myspleen... It would be much appreciated since I don't know how they compare to the G'KAR releases.

Flunk ANH is in a.b.sw, 429 days old.

Unfortunately, I don't do newsgroups. Would anyone mind upping it where it is more accessible (eg. myspleen and file-sharing sites)?

AFAIK the video streams have not been re-compressed and are actually untouched mpeg2 streams that were broadcasted this way.

You should definately upload ANH too. While it is true that the Reivax and Flunk version are slightly better, the big advantage of the G'Kar set is that it contains all 3 movies in a consistent quality and format.

I can upload the Flunk version to myspleen as soon as the G'kar set is well seeded. I don't have the TB releases, but I would really like to get them too.

"Flunk" is ANH only, it is the one displaying the most picture information of the bunch (if only by very little on both sides) It's definitely the sharpest transfer out there as it went through some sharpening process and it also contains what appears to be chroma sub-sampling causing artifacts mostly seen in the reds.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

Now available on myspleen.

Could anyone who has this upload the German ROTJ-SE-crawl for me? Ideally as a not-recompressed MPEG2 snippet...

Thank you so much from doing this. Once I finish downloading this then I'll reupload it and the ANH G'KAR to the file-sharing sites.

If anyone finds any problems with the ESB and ROTJ G'KAR, please PM me immediately so I can try to resolve any issues.

Just finished downloading the Flunk and will upload to the file-sharing websites by Monday. Does anyone know what the deal is with the DTS 5.1 audio mix? Is that real or just an upmix?

In any case, I think the Flunk's picture edges out the Reivax by just a tad, need to double check on that though.

Sorry for the triple post but the Flunk is now on Multiupload for all interested. I'm still looking for the TB set. If someone uploads that, then all digital broadcast versions will be available to all. The ESB of the TB set is of special interest because the G'Kar was heavily compressed.
