P.S. Errata
Unfortunately, The Making of ESB went out with a few mistakes. We hope to fix all of these by the fourth printing. The biggest one-and if it's any consolation to fans, the one that has kept me up at night-is that a double-page matte-painting spread of the Falcon in the book is actually from Return of the Jedi, not Empire; and not painted by McQuarrie but by Michael Pangrazio. A host of strange circumstances went into that error, but I take the blame. Another series of small errors occurred when the publisher replaced my screen grabs from the original ESB version on DVD with screen grabs from the Special Edition DVD; Del Rey regrets the error, too.

We try and minimize all errors by having expert readers go through each of our nonfiction and fiction books, but mistakes happen. It's some sort of cosmic law against perfection.

This entry happened a couple weeks after I emailed him asking about these exact issues.

I don't have ESB, I've yet to get it from the library to do a similar examination. Also, I felt if Rinzler was getting it fixed it wouldn't be necessary, but someone did point out that existing owners might want a guide. It's not nearly as bad as the ANH ones though. It's mostly the color problems that are evident in the MoESB, but I didn't look as close as I have in MoSW. As you can see, the MoSW stuff has more than just recomposites, but actual CGI additions. ESB:SE doesn't have more more than recomposites except for the Cloud City windows and all new scenes, which I think even DelRey could notice.

Ah, now I do remember the thing about the Falcon matte...  Does anyone know what that picture was supposed to be?  I knew that pic in the book was a matte created for ROTJ, but never heard what pic was SUPPOSED to be there instead...

The reason why it was in there is that it was mistakenly put in the OLD definitive making of ESB book. It was a mistake that was carried over into the new one. I'm not sure what he could replace it with, as there are no mattes of the Falcon used in Echo Base. Maybe any of the other mattes... I'm not sure if the 4th printing has started yet, I've messaged Rinzler a few times on various formats but he remains silent.

Which book is that? Are you talking about "The Art of ESB"?

I wonder if there's even going to be a 4th printing.

Actually, there is a Matte of the Falcon in Echo Base, and a really bad one as well (or better, the composit is really bad):

What is it about that composite that is so bad?

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

It's getting to be like that Twilight Zone episode, where a woman keeps passing that same guy on the road over and over, no matter where she goes.

Tonight Jimmy Kimmel, during his monologue, mentioned the Blu-rays coming out tomorrow, and cited some fan discontent. He spoofed the Vader scene in ROTJ by showing a clip with his voice dubbed to be one which sounds like an angry black woman. Not really funny, but still nice to see the pub regarding ridiculous/unnecessary changes.  Before he showed the clip, he mentioned that rocks were added in a scene with R2. "I can just see him sitting in his office thinking 'that scene needed more rocks!'."

I saw that too! :-P The woman's voice was saying something like "OH NO YOU DIT'ENT!!!" as Vader throws the emperor over the railing.

It's ironic that social network has managed to organize the Wall Street protestors in multiple states and get people arrested, whereas our number are so small, most people probably don't know about. Or care. Of course it's an unfair comparison since this is, you know, fiction and not as important, but still...

So, not ironic at all then?

I was just hoping that with social networking we might finally be able to marshal the troops, as it were, but it looks like not enough people really do care. So it goes.
