Okay, another problem.

I got the AC3 file to work perfectly (and it sounds much better even on my computer than the old one), but I must have screwed up the subtitles in there.  I followed the directions EXACTLY as posted in the RAR file, and I ended up with "English 1" being forced subs, but for the entire movie, not just Watto's Huttese dialogue.  "English 2" is an empty subtitle track with nothing at all in it.

Which 2 from the demux should I use?  Which one is the Huttese subs (that are meant to be forced), and which one is the non-forced English subs for the whole movie?

In your Demuxed folder " Subpictures_20.sup" are the subtitles for Hutteese only and should be placed as track 1 and forced. The full English subtitles are named "Subpictures_22.sup"

Hope this helps

If that's what the instructional Word file says, too, then I did that.  It would appear that "Supbictures_20.sup" is the full English subtitles, and "Subpictures_22.sup" is blank.  At least the way it was demuxed on my computer (Windows 7).

I can't test it now anyway as my computer's getting fixed.

So I'm curious to see the list of changes that adywan made to the sources he had...

The "changes" cited on other pages indicate the podrace lap two would have been trimmed, a reaction shot of Watto to Sebulba's performance added, the air taxi scene deleted (replaced by establishing shot), and one shot in the senate would be replaced. I presume then the soundtrack would be "better" and the picture quality improved... is that all (for his edit)?

Regarding the subtitle issues, here is how it works for me:

In the menu the subtitles are automatically turned "on." If I choose "off" (or "on") in the menu the movie starts from the beginning with full subtitles on for everything.

Using my remote I can toggle between three options (subtitles 1/2, 2/2 and "off"). 1/2 appears to just be full subtitles for all dialog. 2/2 appears to be nothing for anyone (I thought it was supposed to JUST be subtitles for the alien languages). How do I fix that?

That's exactly what my problem was after I applied the audio fix, following the instructions exactly as were given in the RAR file.  I'd have figured it out through trial and error by now, but I'm still stuck without a Windows machine until I can get back to school and get Windows 7 reinstalled on my Mac (it was a friend's copy to begin with).

I've got windows2000. Is there a way to just upload some fixes and save everyone having to edit it to work properly (no offense)?

Unless it's something like editing a text file or two...

OK, well i've been doing a bit of searching to try and find out why most people aren't having any problems with adding the new audio but others are. Well it looks like the problem is down to muxman. Some programs installed on pc's seem to have an undesirable effect on this program. It doesn't really like any other operating system than windows xp and can do a few strange things to the output.

I've tried several times to recreate the problem on my pc but everytime it works fine. I had the chance to try it on someone with windows 7 and i have found a solution.

when importing the subtitle files into muxman import all 4 in numerical order, but only if you are having the problems as files 21 & 23 aren't really needed. But doing this won't add any extra subtitle tracks but will enable muxman to behave on problem systems and you will have the correct subtitle tracks displayed on the reauthored file

Thanks Ady, that sounds good.  Once I have the opportunity to try fixing it again, I'll give it a go.

Thanks for working on the problem guys. I might be able to access an XP computer at the library when it opens tomorrow, but I don't know how much I can do in the way of installing new programs and editing, etc. they might frown upon that sort of thing, so I'd much rather download a fixed file. Sadly it's just 2k and linux here.

well the fix will work on windows 2000 too.

Did you apply the audio fix yourself which caused the subtitle problems or did you download a copy of the DVD that the audio was already fixed and had the subtitle problems?

I didn't make any changes to the files I downloaded (thought the problem was ONLY that the subtitles had to be turned on manually with the remote), which frankly didn't bother me that much).

I don't know if the fix was applied to the files on megaupload (which were scavanged from tehparadox). How would I find out?

Just watched this, and it was really great to see the original cut with that awesome theatrical 5.1 EX. Thanks Ady!

Hi!

When I searched through the news archives of the famoust german star wars site www.starwars-union.de i discovered something interesting that could be something to investigate.

In the year 2001 the Star Wars trilogy SE was broadcasted, 16:9 enhanced anamorph and in german dolby digital 5.1 on german pay tv for the first time. We know that already.

The channel broadcasted Star Wars Episode I as well. On 1st of april 2001 (over 6 months before dvd launch) was the first viewing, in 16:9 anamorph, and in german dolby digital 5.1 surround.

This is both audio and videowise interesting for preservations and fan edits.

Video:

  • Theatrical Version
  • Anamorph 16:9
  • DVB Source

Audio:

  • Dolby Digital 5.1 german audio of Theatrical Version

We all know that the DVD/Blu Ray got its own sound mix and is not the theatrical edit.

The original news can be read here:

http://www.starwars-union.de/nachrichten/1113/StarWars_im_digitalen_Format/

The remaining question is if fans have recorded one of the broadcasts back then. With research among the german fanclubs I am quite sure this treasure can get found and preserved.

Does anyone still have the corrected AC3 file that they could possibly reupload?

Found it; it's 424MB. Where did you want it uploading?

Is it possible to get this theatrical version of Phantom Menace anymore?

If you have a usenet subscription it's still available on alt.binaries.starwars.

Go to www.binsearch.info and search - The Phantom Menace -Theatrical Edition - Adywan [Audio fixed] .    It's 530 days old.

Edit:  I recommend subscribing to 'Usenetserver' because it absolutely rocks.  Apparently other services have serious issues downloading old files.  I've had usenetserver for a long time and rarely have any issues.

If the audio on the initial release is as crap as you say it is, whilst I thought it was the best I have heard through my basic system, I cannot wait to get the new AC3 file added to the copy I have.

Of course, the downside is that I will have to watch TPM again afterwards..........

Ditto.

I agree with that...

Is all of it on usenet? I can only find the first 22 parts. It's also not on the spleen.

If someone could re-up, that would be great.
