That thing about there being no need for LFL to release the originals because there are preservations here is BS. Mine are not true original cuts, because it is just impossible to remove every change that's been done and keep the cut in reasonable quality, not to mention that I still use the overly filtered, black crushed 2004 release. And dark_jedi's, no matter how amazingly he was able to improve them, will always be sourced from a motion smeared mpeg2 encode of a 1993 LD master. So there is still need for a proper release - the fan restorations are just a temporary replacement and we should still campaign for a proper release for the sake of film history preservation.
And the other argument, that George has no reason to release the OOT, because there are fan preservation is also totally wrong. In fact, it was the fan made bootlegs that prompted George to release the GOUT in the first place - at the time the fan-made bootlegs were all decent LD transfers, so what he gave us in an official release was exactly that, only that one bit better, so it'd be worth buying to those who already have the bootlegs - minimal cost, maximum profit.
Now there are HD quality bootlegs, maybe it will make him release the OOT in HD quality, again just that one bit better. Not out of realization of how important it is to preserve film history but simply out of greed.
I am afraid though that I can't trust LFL to get it right any more - I hope that if a proper release is ever to be made, they'd consider having someone like Mr Harris do the restoration. Otherwise, if done in-house by LFL, we might live to see the originals released DVNRed to hell with atrocious colour timing.
