The Woman in the picture is Danielle Kousoulis(no idea who the guy is).  She was from my home town and when all through school from Kindergarten through 12th grade with my brother.   She graduated from my highschool and Villanova with honors.   She was vice president of the Cantor Fitzgerald brokerage.  She was on the 104th floor of the World Trade Center.   She was killed on 911.    I don't know anyone personally that died on 911.   I did not know Danielle Kousoulis.   But she is my closest connection to 911.   Thinking of her and the fact that she was one of my brother's classmates and went through the same high school as me, reminds me that the 3000 dead aren't just numbers or statistics; They are real people that were murdered that day.

All the victims, their families and friends and my country will me in my thoughts and prayers today.   I ask all that are willing, to do the same.

I had gotten off that morning from work at 6 a.m. CST after working a 12 hour shift. I was still a rookie, had just a little over a year on the streets.

My wife (then girlfriend) was going to college in Waco while I was living in an apartment south of Dallas. I was settling down in bed flipping the channels and called her at the usual time like we did every morning we were apart due to my job. We were chatting while she was getting ready for school. I noticed that all the channels seemed to be having special news breaks. I told my wife something was up. She turned on her television and we learned a plane had struck the World Trade Center. I remember laying there in bed and telling her that it didn't make sense to me, a plane hitting the WTT, it all seemed just too odd to me. We gabbed a little more about it and then we both, at the very same time since we were both watching Fox News, saw the second plane hit. After a brief minute or so of silence, I finally said to her, "We're under attack."

We talked about it, she started crying, I was up in arms, ready to fight somebody, my natural urge to fight came out very strong, but I had no enemy to fight in my bedroom that morning. We finally decided it was best for me to just stay where I was and she do her normal routine, which was go to school.

I stayed glued to the TV while she went to class, they let her out fairly quickly due to the events of the day and she immediately drove up to my apartment, which was a hour and fifteen minute drive.

She got there about 11 a.m. and we stayed glued to the TV. I finally had to get a little sleep since I had to be back in uniform and on duty at 6 p.m.

I had some very restless sleep between 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m.

I got in uniform and went to work, my colleagues and I simply sat watching the closest TV for hours, we didn't have one call that night. We watched President Bush address the nation, we watched helplessly as our fellow Officers and Firemen struggled at Ground Zero and at the Pentagon.

The lives lost, the needless pain and suffering of thousands, really tore a hole in my heart.

I have to admit though, the two or three months after 9/11 were the best of my career, thus far. People actually appreciated me and my job, they never failed to tell me or show it. Whether I was giving them a ticket or helping them quell a neighbors dog, they'd always be grateful to me for my service. It was remarkable to see so many people from different walks of life actually thank me for just doing what I had to do.

Seriously, it was remarkable. I'll never forget that feeling. I never felt I deserved the praise and adoration I did get, but it was very eye opening to see how great the people in our country can be. It was then I placed a lot of faith in my fellow humans and fellow Americans.

It did really bother me to have to receive the hand shakes and the comments when I was still alive and well while thousands weren't alive to get that which they deserved.

Just a short year and one month later I would burying a fellow Officer of my department who had been slain during the murderous rampage of a psychotic nut. He had relieved me that morning he died, it could have been me, the schedules been different. He wore the same badge and uniform as I did. It all happened to me again, but on a much smaller scale. But that, is another story.....

I'm sure 911 must have been very difficult for you, Ferris, knowing that many officers and firefighters died at ground zero.   I'm also sorry for the loss of your friend.    This isn't thread for it, but please tell us this other story, perhaps in the political thread or wherever you feel appropriate.

I was in our chapel service at the Bible College I went to. Towards the end, one of the professors stood up and said "I just heard that a plane crashed into the World Trade Center". Honestly, I'm not sure if it was the way it was phrased or the way I heard it, but I imagined that a commuter plane had gone off course and crashed into the building, no harm done except for the few people on the plane. It wasn't until an hour or so later, I was at a friend's house and they got a call to turn on the news. All that could be seen was smoke in the city. It was then I realized that it wasn't the plane that should have been the focus, but the building. By that point they both were gone, so I went from "terrible accident" to "deliberate attack on my country" in the span of a minute.

I still don't fully know what to think or feel, 10 years later.

I was in the 5th grade in class, and suddenly my teacher walked into the room and turned on the television. Everything stopped, the world was on pause. I didn't understand what was going on. I soon noticed a country that loved each other for a little while. Everyone was patriotic. Sad that a disaster has to happen for a nation to come together.

I will never forget, it was an event that changed everything.

God bless the men and women who lost their lives, and God bless their family and friends.

I don't always agree with this country, but I do agree with what it was built for.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Funny how you said you were in the 5th grade when 9/11 happened, cuz I was in the 5th grade too the time of 9/11 instead the principal told us to go home immediately. I ddin't understand what happened until we got home. News reports all over the TV reporting about the Twin Towers falling and it was devastating. Never forget that day. Never forget.

I was in a coma 10 years ago and only found out about it the following February 2002. Very devastating for the news then and now.

It was a surreal day. I was out of the country at the time and it was weird to only have a few American classmates with whom to share the sense of confusion. Didn't realize until a couple days ago that I would be in DC on the 10th anniversary. Fortunately it's been uneventful!

I heard about a plane hitting the 1st tower on the way to work and it sounded like a small plane had just clipped the building.  By the time I'd got to work and we turned on the radio they reported a second plane hitting the 2nd tower.  My boss went to a pawn shop and bought a tv and we all watched in horror most of the work day. I felt totally helpless and deeply sad that day for all of those people that were there.

About 1 year later my relationship with my soon to be wife ended and I thought, I'm single and I'll feel bad about it the rest of my life if I don't do something to help all the people in the forces overseas fighting to prevent tragedies like this. So i joined the Army and did what I could to help.

There is nothing that can ever ease the pain of the families of the victims. I can only hope that something like this never happens again.

I don't know anybody that was personally affected by the attack.  I don't feel like I need to. They were all human and all deserved a fair chance at life.

September 11th, 2001. I'll preface this by saying even though I barely remember the day, I understand for many it was a day of tragedy. However, instead of focusing on the past, I remember the patriotic spirit that the country was overfilled with and attempt to live it in my daily life. I suggest you do the same. Long live America and the freedom it represents.
