Where were you in '77?

Funny, but that reminds me, that's how the Death Star should explode. I actually being serious here, I the Death Star would explode, it would cause a Praxis effect from its trench. Sorry, a little off topic rant.

Props to stefcuk.

Thank you so much for this.

I hadn't remembered these existed until now and a quick google search provided me with the full ESB and ROTJ scans. I loved them so much.

LOL!---Regarding RAH's restoration of the Godfather---------Francis Ford Coppola admitted he could not even remember how the film  looked in it's original theatrical release.

Yet an anonymouse internet poster claims he can remember how "brilliant " Star Wars looked(over 25 years ago!).

I saw Star wars twice theatrically(1981 and 1983) and I cannot remember one  way or the other in 2011 wether the prints I saw were vibrant or dull or dirty or clean.

I'll stick with that 1982 VHS for reference for the time being.

Ahem... regarding the restoration of the Godfather, they referenced a technicolor print. And in case you're not sure what a technicolor print is, it's basically a dye transfer process in which the colors never fade. So they knew exactly how the colors were supposed to look.

It is thanks to this same technology that we all know what Star Wars is supposed to look like. Five technicolor prints were made of Star Wars, and one of which was shown in a public screening a couple years ago. People took photos and videos of the screening, which has helped us immensely in determining the exact colors of the original screenings.

Hey AluminumFalcon-

Which broadcast is the Vader/Luke scene from Empire taken from?

-e

It was taken from the G'Kar DVD. I'm not sure where you can find it online anymore but it has the 1997 Special Edition. It's German with English Audio and has smearing.

And that reminds me - space is a vacuum and sound cannot travel in a vacuum. Oh, and faster-than-light travel is not possible. And there's yet to be a scientific sighting of yellow text floating in space. Sorry, a little off topic - wait - topic? What has a hazelnut in every bite?

That is an excellent article--- thanks for posting it.

Although I was refering to the actual special feature in the Godfather trilogy boxset where Coppola states that he could not remember what the film looked like during it's original theatrical run.

I saw Star Wars in 1977. Many, many, many times. For 3 years it was just Star Wars...period. I saw it in good theaters, cheap theaters and drive-ins with those clunky metal speakers you hang on your window. The screen and sound quality never subtracted from the excitement. I can watch the original cut right now, over 30 years later, on some beat up VHS tape and enjoy it. It's the story that makes this movie. Nothing? else.

Let me just say one thing: Lucas wears a "Han shot first" t-shirt.

You think he's ignorant to the "NOooo" hate?

Excellent point. When people slammed Lucas for altering the scene where Only Han Shoots, he created shirts mocking those people and then sold them on the Star Wars site. He took deserved criticism and the voice of his fan base and instead of listening or caring, turned it into yet another revenue stream. He also made it a point to wear one of those shirts on the days they were shooting the Indiana Jones\Crystal Skull documentaries.

I honestly believe that the nooooooo added to Return is a direct retaliation\ego\I'll show you what I can do\I'll show you who controls Star Wars response to the criticism of the nooooo scene from the the last film.

I hope that his revenue is severely dented if he doesn't sell as many as he hoped to.

Do you really think Coppola meant that in the same way at all?

 Really?

I think George makes changes to the films to piss people off, and at the end of the day, he sits in his cathedral of a living room and watches the originals in pristine condition while swimming in money.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

It's like poking someone with a stick, pissing someone off hasn't been so much fun.
