Sending PM.

I plan on using DVD Shrink myself. You should probably just release it as is, and let everyone else decide.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

This will be available on Demonoid in about two hours from now.

Did you say you will be doing a 5.1 version? or just thinking about it? just curious.

Author

Most likely I will be doing a 5.1, of course until it's done it's not a guarantee but I hope that I am able to. This release is basically a beta, just to see how people respond, if there are any problems or more work that is needed. In another month or two hopefully I can improve the sound editing and do a surround upmix and whatever tweaks are necessary as the result of feedback, and author a proper DVD with menus and such.

OK, cool, I will wait for that one then, now when you say surround upmix, you mean only upmixing the alternate footage correct? because most of it you won't have to upmix, these movies already have great 5.1, that is why I was hoping you were you going to do this at some point, because 2.0 was back in our LD capping days LOL, now we have the SWEET audio from the DVD's and Blu to work with, may as well take full advantage of it, at least to me.

Thanks for the info.

Yeah, if it weren't for the deleted scenes this would be 5.1 already, but unfortunately the deleted scenes are 2.0 and they constitute about 40% of the footage here. But I don't want to go mucking about with 5.1 editing until I have a picture lock. Hopefully nothing will change too much because I really like the film as it is, but there might be a little trimming and adding if people think some things are really weird.

Well if you need help with any of the scenes upmixing to 5.1 let me know, I actually have some time between my own project, I am waiting on my Blu menu's so if you want to upload a scene or 2 I could upmix the audio and you can edit in and see how it will sound.

let me know

ps. where are you getting the scenes from anyways? the DVD or Blu-ray? because I have the Blu-ray 5 disc set, I believe I have the DVD set as well.

Thanks for the offer; hopefully I can manage on my own, but I will definitely keep that in mind. The deleted scenes and raw footage are from my DVD set, but my understanding is that the Blu Ray has them only in standard def.

First reaction so far, from Demonoid:

I have been a member for a while and never commented on anything. This is the best version of what is my favorite SciFi film of all time that I have ever seen! THANK YOU, for this upload.

Pretty good endorsement! I'm curious what anyone else thinks.

Never seen a fan-edit in whole my life, but this actually makes me interested. I don't get it, I haven't managed to find it, Zombie, what is the file name on demonoid?

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

Just finished the d/l of the beta (seeding this and Jambes latest now). I've just skipped through it to check on pic and audio quality, and wow, this does seem like something different, reqardless of what i was checkin it for in the first place (pic&audio good on the small screen btw). I'll get chance to view it in full weekend, but i'm stoked.

Thank you for efforts zombie.

After watching this through, for the first time I really find the addition of the narration really added to the film. It made the film seem much more like a old noire film, and I found this extremely enjoyable. Wile this is still a rough cut it's coming together well. A few things I noticed while watching were a blank screen right after Deckard meets Zhora and she is suddenly in her clear trench coat and the big chase scene begins there isn't the whole dressing room scene. Another bit I thought was interesting  is the cutting you did at the end with Tyrell, Roy, and Sebastian why did you take out the lines about the Chess Game.

I liked this fan edit, but I have the same concerns as above.

The zhora edit is a jump cut intended for dramatic effect and is part of the deleted scene itself. The deleted scene cuts to her being shot from black but I wanted to include the chase so I cut to the first violent action instead of the last. I felt the deleted scene editing eliminated a really exciting sequence, was a bit confusing, and I also had a few extra crowd shots in the chase I wanted to include. It's not possible to include the theatrical dressing room scene where Deckard pretends to be a union rep, as the deleted scene editing with the new narration skips this (and I also prefer it skipped).

The chess bit gets taken out because Sebastian doesn't sneak his way in with chess but uses his security override and Tyrell invites him in. Also part of the deleted/alternate scene.

But the deleted scenes montage is not meant to indicate cuts in the actual film, it simply skips over stuff that is not needed for the montage itself.   Naturally, you can cut it however you want, but you shouldn't infer that the film ever intended to cut the way it does in the deleted stuff.

Oh, of course, actually I think Charlie DeLauzirika cut the scenes himself with little or no involvement from Scott and basically designed the deleted scenes to all play together as an alternate, abbreviated cut of the film, but I like the way they play out. It is also is dificult sometimes to insert theatrical footage--for instance I did so in the Taffy Lewis and Rachel vidphone scenes, and a lot of the other ones too, but the way the new Zhora intro works, there's no really good entry point to getting Deckard's con game in there; the deleted scene really presents an alternate version of their meeting. I could try to include some of the scene in there if people think the jump cut is weird. Personally I never thought this part needed work; there is a similar jump cut from black after the Holden scene too.

The thing about the Zora scene that I think will work showing both how Deckard finds the information and his rouse with Zora. It shows that he's smart coming up with that idea right off the top of his head, or who knows maybe he's done something like this before in the past so he knows it'll work. It just shows how Deckard is a good Blade Runner and why Bryant came to him in the first place.

I have a question concerning Blade Runner. It's not directly to do with this edit but I didn't want to start a new thread and I thought Zombie may know the answer:

I always assumed that when the awesome Blade Runner Blu-Ray set was being made, they made new scans of all the versions - did a proper 4K restoration from the negatives for the Final Cut and did a 1080p IP scan for all the others (which look pretty awesome too).

But just out of a whim I checked out my Director's Cut 2006 DVD the other day and that is one awesome transfer, looks almost HD! So my question is:

As the DC DVD transfer was made in 2006, it was probably scanned at at least 1080p and as all three older versions (that is the original US cut, original international cut and the DC) were on one disc through seamless branching, didn't they just use the 2006 DC transfer and scan only those few shots that were cut out for the DC for the BD Box set?

Not that it would make any difference to how awesome that set is, just that they had to put a bit less work into it than I originally thought.

It's impossible to say, I think. They may have scanned all three IPs early in the process, not knowing exactly how the final product would turn out, but then decided just to cut in the missing parts by branching. Or they may have decided on a branched version using the 2006 DC and just scanned those sections. Either way doesn't matter, the final result is identical so it doesn't matter how much "extra" (and ultimately unnecessary) work they did behind the scenes.

Just noticed that a beta of this had been released. Can anyone shoot me a PM where it is? I can't find it on Demonoid and it does sound interesting.

9. What kind of links can I post?

The only direct media links allowed are for short trailers or samples to demonstrate quality. You may also post links to fan-made DVD artwork, subtitle streams and unreleased/obsolete audio or video (this is NOT the same as rare/out-of-print. If in doubt, ask a moderator first.) Do not post torrent files, NZB files or Rapidshare links for downloading copyrighted materials, nor links to sites hosting such files. You are however allowed to mention names of websites or newsgroups where fan edits or preservation projects can be found.

Zombie, I'm a bit out of the loop, but where did you find the Blade Runner dailies? Is it all just the deleted scenes/stuff seen in Dangerous Days? Or is there some other cache of unused material? If so, I'd be thrilled to see that source material.

I'm 99% sure that everything Zombie used came from the box set.
