The franchises I get nerdy about are so obscure that not even most nerds know about them.

I have no problem USING the term, but I've always had a problem understanding "African American."

In general, I know it refers to a American cultural/racial group descended from West African slaves.

I remember times Pres Obama had to do little linguistic hurdles to avoid to strongly identifying as a member of that group, since his own (black) history is actually from Africa, not a member of the group commonly called African Americans.

That group also does not include the millions from the African continent of the "Arab" ethnic group, nor white people descended from colonists, who come to America.

I tend to use the term 'black,' and no one black has ever told me they prefer otherwise.

Oddly, when I use "African American" I've been corrected several times, including, "No, I'm Aboriginal" "No I'm Haitian" and "I'm Canadian."

Not an ideal term, but whatcha gonna do?

I agree. I hate the term "African-American" unless the person actually is "African-American", meaning a person who was born in Africa (regardless of color), immigrated to the United States, and achieved citizenship.

I also prefer black, black American is the most proper to me.

As a matter of fact, I'm sick of the whole hyphenated crap.

Asian-American

African-American

Hispanic-American

etc. etc.

Why can't we all just simply be Americans without the categorizing and pigeon holing of our heritage?

I, myself, look and sound as white as the whitest dude in Texas. However, my surname is Mexican, my heritage runs 300 years deep in Texas, and as recently as my Grandmother, my whole family spoke Spanish and was Catholic. Should any of this really matter in my present self identity? Yes and no. While it matters to me personally, it shouldn't matter one iota in society. I don't deserve nothing more or nothing less because of my heritage.

So I know a girl at my school who says that all music from before 1998 is "gay". I replied, saying "well, that's a very broad generalization". She didn't care. Even worse, she only likes pop and rap. I asked her what's so good about this era, and she said that it was because they were young, they sang about things and stuff that you don't have to think too much about, and that, the autotune that puts them on key is great because "now they all sound the same". And she likes it that way.

She also said that old music sucks because "people's voices were too different and they were ugly".

Her favorite song:

A song she hates only because she finds them unattractive:

Did you punch her? You need to.

My opinion is that the best era of music (1950's) allowed for diversity and individualism than any other era since. That's what made it interesting. Chuck Berry was the best and Fats Domino ruled! They relied on real talent and knowledge rather than just pretty looks and a synthesizer. It's a shame that real talent is now frowned upon. Makes you wonder how many modern Chuck Berry's and Jerry Lee's we're missing out on because they aren't "the in thing".

I wouldn't say talent is frowned upon as much as it is certain musical forms are expected of groups. What I mean by that is that the genres constrict groups too much. Occasional groups tend to cross genres, like Radiohead has gone more electronic in the past few years, but today I think most bands tend to give their fans want they want rather than evolving.
Most pop however is repetitive garbage.

...And don't you ever talk bad about a synthesizer ever again. The Mellotron creates some of the most beautiful sounds I've ever heard.

Is not the video era and mtv responsible for this at least partly, i mean in response to modern popular music on the whole pretty much being crap.

That quick cutting editing style has also gone on to ruin films.

If everything is not super fast faced and without shaky cam, lens flares and hundreds of millions of dollars of fake cgi, god the movie won't even open.

That's why I never understood the outrage of hate on folks like Rebecca Black or the Jonas Brothers or (insert group or artist that markets themselves to 13 year olds here).

I'm not the right demographic, so why should I complain if I don't like it.  I don't complain if I find an episode of Thomas the Tank Engine boring.

I hear what you are saying and it's a very good point. I guess I complain because I think an entire generation is getting it wrong and focusing on the wrong kind of music. It might be first generation where parents don't need to worry about what kind of music there kids is listening to because it's not Marilyn Manson or Elvis, it's Disney and Nickelodeon boy bands. They are going to miss out on real, meaningful music.

I know I'm being pedant, but the Mellotron wasn't a synthesizer, it didn't have oscillators, it was more like a series of tape machines each one hooked to a key.

I just think the stuff from the 50's was the most original, the most inspiring, and took the most real talent to make. Seriously, how could any of the these modern tweens and twenty somethings who look far better than they sing compare to the brilliance of Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, Hank Williams Sr., George Jones, Elvis, etc. etc. etc.

Those guys hammered day in and day out honing their craft and achieved stardom when their music reached the masses and fans demanded them. Unlike today where someone who is merely mediocre musically, but a perfect specimen of what society deems to be sexy and attractive, is molded into a star by relentless advertising and the music industry telling the music consumers "hey, this person is cool, buy their stuff!"

I just don't see anybody in modern music achieving the legendary status, even so far back as the 80's. Probably the closest for me would be Alan Jackson.

I'm not a big Nirvana fan, but I'd say that they had a pretty big impact on music. Pretty much everyone knows who Cobain is.

Moreso than Alan Jackson, at least. Don't hear much about him if you're not into country music.

We catch it, its just that we chuckle and move on our way. You and Johnny Ringo seem to do that a lot. Not that I'm complaining, I rarely update my status at all.

I'd be upset at myself that I'm not b*tching about something, but who cares, we don't have a mod in here! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

The best thing to come out of Nirvana is Grohl, oh and of course Foo Fighters would not exist if Nirvana did not go bust.

Nor would, them Crooked Vultures.
