Modern games (and I realise I must be making a sweeping generalisation here) seem to arm you with much more than you need which dissipates much of the tension.
Any road up wish me luck on those stormy waters.
Not that these games are necessarily about tension, but Halo (2 and onward, I think) had a "skull" which, when activated, would reduce the amount of ammo guns had in them when dropped by fallen enemies. This made the games much less "comfortable" and, for this spartan, much more exciting. You'd basically see a gun on the ground- scoop it up- fire off the 6 or 7 shots left in it- whilst constantly scanning the ground for your next gun. The end result is that you can't nurse your favourite gun all game like you normally can.
It's my favourite skull in those games.
