I heard the 2006 set with the GOUT is now gone...

Was reading a thread elsewhere, with several people chiming in, mentioning how the 2006 DVD set with the GOUT included has been allowed to go out of print.  So not only would there not be DVD versions of the films available (seems odd, as a lot of people still use DVDs) and also there would (again) not be theatrical versions available.

Is this true?

Reactions, if it is?

Here's the original article:

I would guess it's been out of print for awhile.  The idea of moving out competing merchandise is a good marketing strategy.  People need to get their hands on the document which tells retail outlets to do this, is it a prerequisite for selling the blu-rays.  That story will be told when they start disappearing from online retailers.  And where are these items going.  If it's just landfill waste, that's well a waste and bad form.

don't be surprised in this article gets merged with the blu-ray thread, as there are multiple posts on the topic.

It looks like Best Buy still carries it, but it is definitely unavailable from a lot of other websites.

Also check FYE and their sister stores, Saturday Matinee.  They deal in used discs so I'm sure they'll start showing up with the orange price stickers on them as the uneducated masses trade them in to "upgrade" to the BluRay.

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

Well, my local Best Buy doesn't have them in stock. (Checked last week actually.) They recently reorganized their DVD/Blu Ray section, so they may have dumped a lot of stuff that wasn't moving.  Haven't made it out to Fry's yet.

Going to be interesting if they start going up in price all of a sudden, especially the GOUT bonus discs.

A Big Lots supplier got in hot water a couple years ago selling them a lot of Warners DVD overstock earmarked for destruction, so I guess it does happen.

Yeah the last dvd version is being phased out. Luckily I was enough of a mark to buy that shit twice ('04 and '06) so I'm set for awhile.

I have seen Star Wars (E4) in my local store 2 weeks ago

Well, the GOUT was actually supposedly a Limited Edition, so it's not that surprising Lucas is finally making sure it gets phased out. I recall seeing some in a Borders store when I was there for the "Closing" sale. Anyway, with all the preservations/enhancements we have of the GOUT, the base disc is somewhat unnecessary.

As for the other DVDs no longer being available, well that's not surprising, the 2004 version is now outdated, replaced by the 2011 version. The good thing though is that we've thoroughly preserved the 2004...

The franchises I get nerdy about are so obscure that not even most nerds know about them.

We still have Amazon to buy the DVDs. But suprisingly, the OT DVDs are going for big money there right now.

But the blue & black OT boxed set wasn't advertised as "LE" was it? And it contained the GOUT as well......

Ha! That's fantastic. You're right. I wonder if people are spending on those because they don't want the Blu-Rays anymore. I could picture it being a Collector's DVD like the 2 Disc Edition of Tron when Tron Legacy came out. We really need to spread the word about the preservations/enhancements on this sight. If people would accept GOUT quality to get narratively-better Star Wars movies, the Despecialized Editions or the V3 ought to blow them completely away. Someone should post a discussion on Amazon about them...

^Bad idea. Let's just say we'd rather avoid any... Imperial entanglements. Meaning if the wrong person saw that they could go after Harmy and DJ for piracy or something.

In retrospect, you're probably right. I suppose it could be construed as piracy. I think that was the problem with some of the ideas in the "Sticker Campaign" thread. Best to stick with that Facebook page for now. The word will somehow spread I suppose...

I always see tons of them at Target; the old Limited Edition ones sold separately, and the black/blue set. I'll have to check if I go there tomorrow, but if this rumor is true, I'm sure they'll be gone.

I use to see them in Target too, but not lately. All the stores near me did a bit of remodeling putting in their larger grocery sections, and shuffled other departments around since I last spotted the discs though.

Five years to pretty much the end of the DVD era... Limited indeed! LOL

I don't think DVD in general is going to fade away anymore than CD's have.

A lot of tv shows produced in standard definition are not going to benefit from a Blu Ray release. "Back catalog" releases, even of mega popular movie titles simply aren't going to get a simultaneous DVD release anymore.

More studios are mining their vaults for Made On Demand titles now, which may eventually benefit all those obscure movies we love that haven't seen the light of day since VHS ruled the land.

Pulling old store stock off the shelves seems like a calculated move to drive demand though.

No diffrent than Paramount pulling the standard def original star trek dvd's without the cgi, to force people to buy the stupid blu rays or purshase them second hand at ridiculous prices, often ending up with bootlegs when they thought they were puchasing the real deal from the marketplace sellers.

Yeah sure the cgi versions are available on dvd only, which is garbage.

I also saw they pulled the gout from Amazon, and i too thought it was another Luca$cheme.

I've heard some Big Lots stores have been getting some of the early 2 episode per disc TOS releases recently. There was a massive amount of Trek DVD product there over the holidays last year. Got some of the "Fan Collective" sets and the DS9 season with the Tribble episode super cheap.

It would be really funny if some Star Wars titles showed up there. There must be a warehouse full of the pan and scan versions someplace.

I know my local video store had 2006 sets 'on sale' for quite a while. Might have a look next time I'm nearby.

and re: star trek TOS blurays - I actually considered getting them for a bit of fun but the sticker price was circa $230 PER SEASON! Hopefully no-one will buy them and the price will drop like a rock.

I think I'll look for one more copy of the 06 Bonus Disc myself.  Sort of a just in case copy and a show of support as well.

WOW, these are going to become rare? I actually have 3 Sets, 1 Set I bought from Walmart with the exclusive Action Figure Set(3 Sets) they were selling separately, and then later in the week I was at Best Buy and saw they had a limited Edition BB Exclusive Tin Set, so I picked that up since it was the last one, and then I imported a PAL Set from Amazon.Co.UK, but this does not surprise me, so what are they going for now for those of you looking to buy them now? they are not crazy priced yet are they?
