Okay, my point is that I don't listen to the radio hoping to hear anything new like I used to.  I'm much happier listening to music I already know I like.  So I couldn't really tell you if 2011 is the start of a good decade for new music or not.

I found a lot of good stuff in the last few years (typically called Indie, although in the 90's it was called Alternative).  Examples:

-Arcade Fire
-Architecture In Helsinki
-The Bird and the Bee
-Cassettes Won't Listen
-Cut Copy
-Death Cab for Cutie
-Dr. Horrible (seriously, check out the DVD Commentary Songs)
-The Decemberists
-Flight of the Conchords
-Flobots
-Friendly Fires
-The Futureheads
-Gorillaz
-The Gregory Brothers (Auto Tune the News - seriously!)
-Headlights
-The Helio Sequence
-Interpol
-Johnny Foreigner
-Kaiser Chiefs
-Late of the Pier
-Los Campesinos!
-Mates of State
-Max Tundra
-Mew
-The New Pornographers
-The Octopus Project
-The Postal Service
-Ratatat
-Reel Big Fish
-The Seedy Seeds
-So Many Dynamos
-Sufjan Stevens
-The Thermals
-Tokyo Police Club
-Wonderlick

(and yes, I know, a few of these have gone major label)

The bad news is that it's harder to find because you can't just turn on the radio to hear this stuff (for the most part, and dependent in some cases on where you live).  The good news is you can find it via the internet (music blogs, radio feeds like KEXP Seattle and WOXY Cincinnati, etc.).

I look at that list and I think, hell, music has been very good lately.  You just have to find it.

xhonzi, ever listen to KTCL?  There was a time it was good but I haven't listened to it in a while.  KBCO isn't bad either.

This decade is shaping up to be the worst I've ever seen in regards to music. 100.99% of the music is the shitty pop, rap, R&B, etc., the few "artists" out there that actually can sing can't write shit, and hypersexualized superficial Hollywood bullshit is the core of the shit they do write.

Makes me long for the good ol' days, like the 1990s. REAL artists like the Spice Girls, O-Town, Ace of Bass, Too-Short, Silk, Hanson, Gerardo. THOSE were the days.

Perhaps I'm confused (not by your math). You're mad that most music is part of a genre?

Shoot me a PM of where you live and your schedule, so I can come over and dish up an ass whoopin.

EDIT: I'm in California. If you're too far East, would you mind if we wait till the Christmas Holiday?

Except for a few songs from the Spice Girls I never listened to any of those bands, so I can't say how bad/good they really were (I didn't like the Spice Girls, though). As for music belonging to genres, no I don't hate that. I hate that most of the music being made in those genres today really suck.

I actually love the Spice Girls.  I'm comfortable enough with who I am that that no longer brings me any shame.

I'd say roughly 1960-2000 with a few things afterwards and classics pre-1960. This covers primarily what I listen to.

As far as a decade....uhh...60's or 70's or 80's or 90's..I can't choose.

I would say Sinatra would classify under 40's-50's.

BTW kev, I added the 40's.

Why are the 2010's eligible?  They just got started.

Author

A vote for the 40's.

Benny Goodman, the Andrews Sisters, Duke Ellington, Spike Jones, Hugo Winterhalter, etc.  Man, I love that stuff.

Author

I was talking to Sunset Newday on Skype and she said that the 2010's were the best decades for music.

She also said that the 70's suck ass, so her argument is invalid.

No, but I second the 70s as well. 80s, 90s, and beyond have good stuff, only on the indie side, not the mainstream. The 70s were the best by a longshot.

Best decade is definitely the 1960s. Not sure about worst decade, likely 2000-10s. But the 1950s/early 60s were incredibly boring.
