I'm actually glad I read that blog post. I don't think its funny at all. Seriously, think about it: Lucas must have some reason for adding the NOOO!, believe it or not his goal isn't to rape people's childhoods, its creating his own vision of these movies. Now don't get me wrong, I don't like the change at all or the idea of revisions, but I don't approve of laughing at that post. Lucas had a reason for changing that scene and in all honesty I believe that that post, in trying to figure out why Lucas made the change, probably came up with the actual reason Lucas changed that scene. Hell, that post wasn't even defending him. So really, let's calm down here.

I don't think that blog post is straw-clutching, because I think they've presumed George's intentions correctly. After all, George must have had intentions, no matter how horrible and ridiculous. Is it silly to guess at them?

Neither does it sound like an apologist argument. That would mean finding some crazy way to say the new "Noooo"s are an improvement. This blog post doesn't seem to do that.

I think it's clear that George wanted this moment to "rhyme" with Vader yelling "Nooooooooooo!" at the end of ROTS. In theory it's an artistically interesting choice. It's just a shame that George doesn't realise the "Noooooooo!" moment from ROTS is one of the stupidest, most laughable, cheesiest things in the entire saga. George also doesn't seem to care that Vader's silence in this scene was always a point of strength and good drama, which can only be spoiled by voicing his feelings.

Agreed. I basically let go of Star Wars with the 1997 SE, affirmed with the PT.

I spend my disposable income on stuff that still resonates with me on an emotional level - Star Wars is no longer it.

Every loud, substanceless works of pure shit (e.g. Michael Bay) can undeniably trace their ancestry to SW. Cinema as an art form became economically unviable in Hollywood after 1977, and we still haven't recovered from the shock. The constant revisions and destructions of the original versions are just nature taking its course.

Yeah, because Hollywood NEVER churned out any crap before 1977, especially not big spectacle films or crappy sequals.

I knew shit was being made before 1977, but thankfully people had more common sense back then and avoided them. I'm sure if twilight and transformers were made in 1965 they would have bombed like they should. But in the last 35 years, shlock has become acceptable to the moviegoing public.

No. Again you're objectively wrong.

The Universal Monsters, Godzillas, Planet of the Apes, James Bonds, were all money makers, which is why the studios kept churning them out.And Cleopatra was the highest grossing film of the year. 1963. How was that Lucas's fault?

Okay, it wasn't GL's fault. But compare Hollywood today and Hollywood c.1965 and you realize there is much more competition from other media (videogames, internet, cell phones, TV, etc) than there was 50 years ago (TV alone). So the studios just rely on the old same tired brand names to make money. Hence, movies have become more like products than works of art. No American studio is going to risk their money on an original idea when people would rather watch youtube on their iphones and then go home to watch a TV series on netflix instant. Film is going the way of the novel and paintings, because there is just too much shit to deal with.

I remember in the early days of the internet GL would participate in online chats talking about the franchise and relating to the fans.  I wish the man would come here and post some of his thoughts and at least engage in some dialogue about the issues.  Instead he just hides behind corporate cronies putting out propaganda and refusing to communicate with his fans.

Luke threw twice…maybe.

This is only a matter of ego...just as the surgeons who refuse to acknowledge when they make mistakes.

There are two ways to act when we are wrong :

1 - accept it and make the change

2 - refuse it and continue along the same path (to convince itself and try to convince the others)

Lucas has seen all the bad reviews about the "nooo !!" in ROTS...and instead of recognizing that it was a very bad idea and badly done, he persists and signs.

How can he hope that this new "nooo!!!" in ROTJ will be well received !!!?

We are humans, and humans make mistakes ... Lucas is no exception...I just hope that one day he will accept it.

and it's not a matter of vision here...different vision or something...it's a matter of taste : good or bad...this new "nooo!!!"  is just wrong in every way, it is an offense to good taste.

Plus, if your vision of what you want your film to be changes every few years, is that a vision at all? I think he just changes it to spite all the fans out there or try to stay relevant after his 15 minutes were up.

dark_jedi wrote: So has anyone started any kind of audio list of changes for the new Blu's that are coming

After the Wood's stuff are comments people have made, verification by others awaits.  One of the keys in this discussion is to get Wood to admit that most of the audio work was done for the 2004, then figure out what from that point was changed for the 2011s.  Here's some of his Wood's words, but it's mostly unclear:

http://www.hometheaterforum.com/t/314106/lucasfilm-on-star-wars-the-complete-saga-blu-ray-part-ii-matthew-wood

Q:  Was there anything else that you had to make up or add in?

A:  Occasionally in New Hope, there were things that could not be completely found, a few very subtle things like a footstep here and there or some background noise that we would just re-perform or get an approximate sound.  And of course, every time we watched the movies, George would find something that he wanted to change, so there were changes to the films visually as well as audio-wise, so there are some changes in the Blu-ray version that you guys will find!  It was funny, because we’d meticulously put it all together, “here’s what it was!” and then he’ll update it.

Q:  On the DVD, the orchestra for the surround channels was swapped, was that fixed?

A:  It’s funny, because it never really was an error --- what happened back then was that the music master we had at the time didn’t have any surround information.  One of the techniques that has been used previously from mixers is to give it a bigger soundstage---they would have flipped the back channel to give it a different kind of reverb.  And that was done on the THX 1138 remaster, which I didn’t work on.  For this go-round (6.1) we decided not to do that, so the surround information is direct to the back, no longer flipped on the music track.

Q:  Was there any thought given to archiving previous tracks like the 6-track master from the 70mm prints or the 78 mono remix?  Any thought given to putting them on the Blu-ray?

A:  Yes, we have those and they’ve all been digitized.  I don’t know if they considered putting those on the Blu-ray.  That might be more of a question for Marketing, it may be an issue of space.  It’s funny because I play those other audio tracks, like the scene when R2 and C3PO have been left on Tatooine and they walk through the canyon.  I just love that on the current mix, you can actually hear the quiet, when R2 is lonely, going through the canyon.  I played the original mix and it’s FULL of hiss and totally brittle, so it’s fun now to hear it like George wanted it to really be, what was intended.

Adywan wrote: Something else i noticed about the audio. The sound effects for part of the detention cell shoot out swapped channels in the 2004 versions. Now i decided to check the Blu-Ray audio and the same mistakes are there. Just check the section right after the Stormtroopers start knocking on the door when 3P0 is on the comlink right up until Leia blasts the hole in the wall. Now this was a mistake only found in the 2004 version and was correct in all the old mixes. You can hear it best if you can mute all channels apart from front left & right. even though the laser blasts are quite fast to keep a track of which direction they are, just keep an eye out for when Han shoots. You hear two clear blasts coming from the left channels when they should be coming out of the right. In this section all the effects are swapped. Now did they really start this mix again from scratch or did they just go and fix the rear channels and dialogue?

from MF.com

Brass can now be heard during X-Wing dive to the Death Star.

Energy wave sound from Death Star explosion sounds more balanced.

Vader's breath sound can be heard when his TIE is spinning, but is very faint.

Hamill's "The first transport is away" is still there.

C-3PO still says "There's nowhere to go" after saying "Oh this is suicide."

On Dagobah, Luke still tells R2 "You were lucky to get out of there" instead of "You're lucky you don't taste very good."

Boba Fett's voice is still the 2004 "Kiwi" accent from Temuera Morrison.

Vader's "Alert my Star Destroyer...." crap is still there, unchanged.

"Jedi Rocks" is still there and unchanged.

Vader's "NO's" have been added. The first sounds like it has been sloppily laid on top of the mix, the second is from ROTS.

See, that just freaking pisses me off.... you have Lucas with a sh*t-ton on money to throw at this release, to "improve" it as he "sees fit", yet he can't hire James Earl Jones or even Chad Vader for one damn day to do some new voice work, he just recycles that BS line from ROTS over the audio mix and think's it'll sound perfectly fine when it won't. -_-

They could be both the same "Nooo" from ROTS, and an unused take of the first "no".  At least they sound more like JEJ than the "alert my star destroyer" Ep V line.  I've NEVER thought that was JEJ, and I don't buy Ben Burtt's BS about it being a discarded take from Ep IV

Latest Star Wars Saga DVDs Recalled? No Longer An Opportunity To Buy?

We have learned of a rumor. Please take this with a grain of salt until more in confirmed, but one of our readers has attempted to purchase some of the currently available Star Wars films on DVD. He was informed by a Walmart employee that all have been recalled. I have also not been able to find any in stock at the moment. Have we all missed the boat trying to grab the current versions? Does this mean that forever our beloved films will have Ewoks blinking? Could Lucasfilm, Ltd. be futilely trying to get rid of remaining existing versions of the Star Wars saga? Dude, shut the hell up, stop moping around this forum, and go download Harmy's or dark_jedi's preservations.

If you don't like my moping, then just ignore me dammit. People on this site can't admit this, but in recent years SW has done more harm than good. It took 30 years to realize the horrors unleashed because of SW's success. If the creator is the worst flaw of a franchise, than that franchise wasn't good in the first place.

Every loud, substanceless works of pure shit (e.g. Michael Bay) can undeniably trace their ancestry to SW. Does that sound mopey, Frink?

Ah yes...if SW had never existed, we'd all be so much happier, and the crap blockbuster would never have been invented by someone else in the past 30 plus years.

Sheesh.

I'm afraid there is indeed something wrong with those screens none, they seem to have increased brightness (this is clearly visible on the black bars), which I'm sure isn't the case with the HDTV captures.

Why do people keep on saying the scene with the added "Nooooo" now mirrors the scene in ROTS? The scene without the audio tweaks mirrored a scene in ROTS already and was a lot better than Vader's "birth" scene.

My favourite scene in ROTS (yes such a thing does exist) is the bit where Anakin is alone in the council chamber and in silence looks out across the vast city contemplating what to do. At the same moment, Padme stands in her apartment looking out towards the Jedi Temple. Anakin finally makes up his mind and rushes off to stop Windu killing Palpatine, an action that will ultimately lead him to the dark side.

This scene doesn't need dialogue and as I say is one of my favourite scenes. It mirrors Vader looking on in silence as Palpatine is slowly killing Luke. He makes his decision and turns on the Emperor, an action that ultimately leads to his redemption from the dark side.

Sadly, I doubt Lucas intended these scenes to mirror each other. People who think the added "NOOOOO" is the perfect mirror to the one in ROTS sadly misinterpret repetition as a form of mirroring.

It isn't, it's lazy storytelling that over explains it for sake of the few who don't understand what is going on. Even as a child, I enjoyed the scene in Jedi because despite the mask, you knew what Vader was thinking and no dialogue was needed. Then or now!

Your brain just makes s**t up!

A fate worse than death? Having your head digitally replaced with that of Hayden Christensen!

Interesting. But this doesn't compute with Lucasfilm reasoning why the DVD Special Features haven't been carried over. They all say, the blu ray boxset is intended as addon, not replacement.

It's a shame that the text commentaries from dvd.starwars.com haven't been carried over to this set. The dvd.starwars.com page is down since 2006. The text commentaries are gone. :(

There were script to screen commentaries for ep 1-5 and depth commentaries for ep1-3 online.

I once saved both commentaries from Ep1 in their original html format. I have posted the Depth C. in 2010 @ a.b.starwars. The html can be used to create dvd/br compatible subtitles. If anyone is interested pm me.

I've read about some broadcasts using the color safe palate of 16-235 instead of the full range 0-255.  Don't have a confirmation if this German'07 is indeed following that principle.  This could explain the greyish black bars.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1090642

Check out the second post.  (here's a excerpt)

Source video files - DVD, HD-DVD, Blu-ray and Broadcast TV MPEG2, H264 and VC-1 will have their video stored in 16-235 format on-disc. This is what broadcast facilities and studios use as standard for digital video. Black is at 16, White is at 235.

This avsforum conversation happened in 2008 shortly after this German'07 broadcast.  If anyone wants to say 'confirm' then this could be the explanation.

I've got a bunch of others, if time i'll cap'um.

Now as I have said, this set will still sell like hotcakes, but I firmly believe the NOOO change was the turning point in the 'casual' fan getting fed up with all the OT changes.  When the 04 Set came out, there was not as much anger as I have seen by fans and columnists.

Back then there was no Twitter of FB. I strongly believe that's the main reason so many people now know what crap the box set is before buying it.

Newscasts, reviews etc links could be shared in forums and blogs, but now those same blogs or posts or whatever go viral in a few minutes due to twitter, so even if you don't like or care about SW in this case but follow someone that follows someone that does and RT an article about how shit these are, BAM!

There you have the news/links available to people, where otherwise wouldn't have heard of all this any other way.

Just imagine what it would have been like if Twitter (and overall number of people using the internet) existed back in May 1999 or in 97 - I imagine the backlash against Lucas would have been even worse than it is now.

I'm really happy it's getting so bad reviews all over the place, Lucas, Lusasfilm and the people involved deserve the hate they're getting IMO.

EDIT>

PS. BTW, I first heard about the changes from a tweet by @SWRevisited last Thursday. Had forgotten these were about to come out simply because I stopped caring a long time ago, so I'm one example of my post above hehe.

The Fry's stores in my area usually are pretty good with keeping old stock on the shelves until it finally moves. (They had tons of the original two episode Star Trek discs a few years ago.) I saw the most recent trilogy sets there sometime back. Will try to check them out this week.

I have wondered if Lucasfilm tries to keep their products from ending up in the cut out bin at discount stores. Although THX-1138 didn't escape that fate. ;)
