Well, I propose (with making a new Special Edition version in mind, not from a purist point of view) that if something can't be made to look better (and at least to me when I look at that comparison, the original looks better and more realistic), there is no reason to change it. Especially if you're basically just recreating with CGI what's originally been done perfectly with practical FX.
Oh, and in the last sample, you can see pieces of the original DS on the edges of the CG one.
