Praise a "bad" movie — Page 2

There are a few positive aspects of the PT that I can think of (and there are whole threads dedicated to that) but I would agree with TPR that Liam Neeson isn't one of them.  You said it that it's hard to find fault with Neeson and I don't find it hard at all.  There does seem to be a fair amount of Qui-Gon love on these boards, but I can safely say I don't understand it in the least.

And this is coming from a chap who, while not having any posters or tattoos of the man, consider him to generally be a highlight of the pictures he's in.  I can't say I go out of my way to see all of his movies, but I generally consider him to be a plus.

Just not in TPM.  For the same reasons as TPR already listed.  I find him terribly dull and flat.  And wholly unconvincing.

EDIT: Something positive about MJPollard's post...  Well, it was bold.  Or do I just have to be positive about TPR's post?  It was true.  Wait, I guess I replied to MJP afterall...  It was... defeated?

That's why TPM is IMHO the best of the prequels. Despite the plot holes, the so called "characters", and the crappy CGI, they had real sets and models for a lot of Special Effects, which made them look real. Or more real than the CGI crap of the other two.

"The Last Airbender". Wrong choice of actors, complete lack of humor, awkward fight scenes, but the set design was awesome.

EDIT: Did I mention that I hate this board's quote function?

Timmy to the Rescue.

It was so bad, I started to understand why so many fans hate the Prequel Trilogy.  Now, I'm in between "the PT's okay" and "the PT sucks."

The franchises I get nerdy about are so obscure that not even most nerds know about them.

I do not like much about The Fifth Element, but Gary Oldman is an excellent actor...except maybe when he's got a horribly annoying Southern-ish accent.

The Sentinel (1977)

An amazing cast of really good talent and big name stars (in an utterly bonkers turkey directed by Michael Winner).

Hey, I'm just being honest, man.  It's a cool looking 6 seconds. I remember almost nothing else, but that jumped out at me as nicely designed.

Isn't it a bit hypocritical to like a movie simply because of real sets and models? That's like the people we criticize for saying that there's not enough CG in current movies/the prequels...

Seems what you are looking for is Lucas apologist. Cannot get anyone better than Ebert.

Not going to be me to say anything positive about them prequels or indiana jones IV, excommunicated i know.

I can say something nice about howard the duck, Lea Thompson is in it,lol.

I can even say something nice about the star wars holiday special the fett cartoon was the only good part.

What is cool in the prequels would have been someone of Christopher Lee's talent not being used in such a poor way.

The amount of talented actors, minus Hayden and the non performances and wooden acting Lucas got has to take a kind of talent, no other director could have had Terrence Stamp, Liam Neeson, Ewan Mcgregor, Natalie Portman, Ian McDiarmid and get terrible performances from them all.  Add in Christopher Lee starting in Episode II and III, and its almost a crime.

He managed to also get terrible performances from Frank OZ, someone who did great performances under the direction of Jim Henson, Irvin Kershner and Richard Marquand.

How in the hell do you mess Yoda up or Darth Vader for that matter, such widely known iconic characters, Lucas even got Chewie wrong in Episode III.

Hudson Hawk is almost totally awesome.

Gremlins 2 6.1 on IMDB

I think most people would call this a flop, but I love it's ridiculousness so much it is easily my favorite of the two.

Johnny Mnemonic 5/10 on IMDB

Say what you want about Keanu Reeves' acting skills but he was made for this role. I don't know how Ice T ended up in so many dystopian movies but it somehow works for him. Then just add a horrible Dolph Lundgren cameo and Henry Rollins and you've got yourself a horribly great movie.

Hudson Hawk is like the worst movie ever made if you love the first die hard though and followed that up by watching that, or you could do worse Bruce Willis talk show.

Johnny M is not so bad a movie if you see the Japanese cut and see it as a bad Japanese b movie, not expecting a Matrix film.

I mean what did you expect its the guy from bill and ted.

I think that's what I love about that movie. Bruce Willis has this action star image and I enjoy seeing such an unexpected side of him.

I do prefer the Japanese Cut, and I like its Japanese style with those actors and that storyline. A lot of people miss that and just see it as a low budget movie with a lot of poor line deliveries (The introduction with Rollins is almost embarrassing but I do still like his character).

I can't help but mention again how much I like Ice-T in some of these sci-fi, dystopia movies. He's such an unlikely person to play such strange roles.

Armageddon

I always thought the President's speech was awesome, despite the rest of the movie (although I have to admit the movie is a guilty pleasure of mine).  The actual speech is great, and the cinematography during it is really cool.

Waterworld. I like post-apos and it was a great concept with lots of cool stuff.

Batman Forever. It's fun, almost a cartoon and enjoyable when taking it what it really is.

I didn't say I liked it. But due to the rules I couldn't say it sucked less than Episodes II and III. ;-)

Sets/models/costumes/lighting/etc. are not at all the same as CGI.

Or did you mean, it's bad to like a movie simply because it has actual models over CGI?

Either way, I don't agree.  Some people like models better, and like the movies better because of them, what's wrong with that?  Personally, I think CGI is great, and can make a movie a million times better than it would have been otherwise, when it's used correctly, but that's just my opinion (as it is everyone's).
