I wouldn't say talent is frowned upon as much as it is certain musical forms are expected of groups. What I mean by that is that the genres constrict groups too much. Occasional groups tend to cross genres, like Radiohead has gone more electronic in the past few years, but today I think most bands tend to give their fans want they want rather than evolving.
Most pop however is repetitive garbage.

...And don't you ever talk bad about a synthesizer ever again. The Mellotron creates some of the most beautiful sounds I've ever heard.
