Neither do bees. They do defend in packs though. That thermal thing is weird to see. They do that to bumble bees, hornets, etc. The wasp would have to be trying to get into the hive and steal honey though. They don't go out looking for them.
Hmmm... you're starting to sound like a Bee-apologist. Can you post your birth certificate, proving you're NOT a bee?
Beyond that, the males don't really do anything. They don't gather pollen, nectar, or water, they don't feed the queen, they don't take care of babies, they don't clean the hive (bees are meticulously clean), nor can they defend the hive (no stinger). They sometimes fan the entrance to reduce the heat, but that's about it.
Don't let my wife read this! It might give her ideas to kick me out of the hive!
