Either way, anyone who says they aren't buying the BD set because of the changes is going to miss out. Look at all those special features. The deleted scenes are enough for me. Can't wait!

I honestly don't feel like I'm very much missing out.  I'd certainly never buy a release just for its bonus features.  Again, it's sending the wrong message.  We have to send George the message that we're not going to put up with this crap, and the only way to do that is to not buy the damn things.  If people are fed up with the changes but still buy them for the additional content, all Lucasfilm sees is, "Oh, it sold well.  We can keep doing what we're doing."  So I understand the desire to "be legit" for fan projects and to finally have access to the deleted scenes.  But my opinion on that, is that if it's really that necessary, buy them off of eBay.  Then you'll still legitimately own the thing, but you won't be lining the bearded one's coffers and making him think that people actually support these ridiculous changes.
Yes, I'm usually against buying things used as it doesn't show your support for the product, but in this case, I'm all for it.

This has probably been addressed before, but here's, briefly, what I think. The "NOOOOO!" actually changes the entire tone of the scene. Originally, that climactic scene masterfully displays the inner "conflict" lurking in Vader's head. That's why this scene was my favorite when I was a child. That's why it has remained my favorite throughout the years. No words are necessary. Vader makes a decision, reacts, and saves his son. Period.

The new version destroys all of this for me. Maybe I'm sentimental; maybe I'm intolerant of change. But this is just how I feel. That's it, and that's all.

2 things.

1.

I showed my wife the Nooooo scene last night, but since she's not Mrs. 005 or even Gaffer Tape, I thought I might have to prime her by showing her the same scene out of the original.  She watched it somewhat impatiently, wondering why were watching it- looking for changes that she didn't see.  Then I played her the Noooo! and she couldn't identify which was the original.  Then I played her the end of RotS and she thought it was ridiculous that they used the same Nooooooooo!

But that's not really my problem.  While watching the original, I could not stop thinking about the Nooooooo!  It's there, even when it isn't.  CURSE YOU LUCAS!

and

2. At what point does piracy of the special features become a "civil disobedience"?

I hope these leaked changes do lead to a significant loss of sales.  Because at the moment, all I can think of is that tweet Katie Lucas put out:  Haters are gonna hate, but, in the end, they're still going to buy it.  That's the (up until now extremely accurate) impression they have of us.  The fans will bitch and moan because that's what fans do.  The press will cover it.  But in the end it will still be the most successful Blu-ray release ever.  So why not keep making changes?  That's the mindset we have to squash because it gives them license to keep going, and it makes us look stupid.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

I'm already pre-emptively hiding from this, but are any of these changes really THAT bad? As far as the Nooo! goes, it kind of ties the prequels in nicely to the OT, the Krayt dragon call is incredibly minor, and Adywan made the cantina aliens blink, so why can't the Ewoks? Is any of this as awful as Greedo shooting first? Jabba's Palace dance number? For the first time, I feel like I actually get why he is making these changes. And the CGI TPM Yoda is a huge improvement. That puppet looked like Kermit and Miss Piggy's ugly middle child.

Don't get me wrong, I would generally rather watch the Original Versions. but I find the special editions sort of cool in that Lucas is changing all six movies to gradually make them work together as a cohesive whole. If you look at them that way, they've almost become an interesting fanedit of themselves.

I'm going to go hide behind my ray shield now...

For one thing Adywan isn't Lucas and yet he bothers to get the colours, saber blades etc to look as close to right as possible and he corrects continuity errors where as Lucas makes new ones where they previous weren't.

The Ewoks eyes changing seems to be done in a piecemeal fashion, Ben's howl sounds utterly awful and as for the new "Noooooooooo"! as if the PT hadn't already robbed Anakin/Vader of any dignity this is just bonkers beyond bonkers.

As people have been saying, if the OUT was in the set any further SE changes George made would be bad enough but at least you could pop on the original versions but this edition means that even the SE fans are getting shafted again.

People who pre-ordered this did so thinking they were getting the films with a few new changes but none of these were new revelations were announced after waiting for the countdown clock a few months ago.

If these changes don't bother you then enjoy your discs by all means but you can't really compare what Lucas has done half arsed here with the sort of meticulous care and consultation that Adywan has put into his amateur (in the true sense of the word) SEs.

For one thing he isn't charging for them let alone encouraging people to pre-order something that he isn't delivering.

It is sandpapering the smile off the Mona Lisa and I'm not paying for it.

I firmly believe none of these changes were even in the planning stages before May 4th. It would take one guy a month to do all of those changes. I believe that's all the time they took.

Read some of the 5 Star reviews on Amazon.

Quite a few boil down to "Yeah, I think the changes suck too. But whatever."

It is pretty sickening how Lucasfilm seemed to have been wanting to keep these changes under wraps.  Just like the 2004's, it would have all been a complete surprise if it weren't for the leaks, tricking people into buying them with no knowledge.

Piracy never can be, but Willful Copyright Infringement certainly can.

Back in 2005 there was a p2p civil disobedience with the distribution of the civil rights documentaries "Eyes on the Prize" which hadn't been aired for many years because of a few copyright issues.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A14801-2005Jan16.html

The same thing is happening with Martin Luther King Jr.'s 'I Have a Dream' speech:

http://motherboard.tv/2011/8/29/the-copyright-nightmare-of-i-have-a-dream--2

Like the Zapruder film, when does something become so important that the copyright owner gets out of the way so people can see and understand.

Similarly Archive.org is attempting to create a public archive of 9/11 video:

http://blog.archive.org/2011/08/24/understanding-911/

Problem is were dealing with an entertainment item, but the wave is starting that certain pieces of video are beyond the control of anyone.  But more importantly shouldn't be controlled by anyone.

Star Wars fans are the most self-loathing group I've ever known. They complain (rightfully) and bemoan how diluted and shitty the franchise has become, yet they continue to cling to every piece of scrap from Lucas' table because they need their SW fix. It's an unhealthy addiction.

I couldn't care less about the stupid Clone Wars cartoon or any other EU garbage. The comics and novels were fun in the 90s, but now there's so much crap out there it must feel like a chore just to keep up.

Yet, at the same time it does seem that if you sample people on the web who have spoken against the blu-ray, a majority of them have canceled their preorders or otherwise sworn off the set. This saga will sell because of people who don't follow these rumors and tidbits as closely as us, and they make up probably 95+% of the consumer base.

Well I'm personally still going to buy it. Those deleted scenes are something I've wanted to see for years, and though I wish I could just pirate them, I can't bring myself to do that. I want the CGI Yoda. I want the documentaries. There's enough there for me to justify the purchase. If it was just the movies with these changes, there's no way, I'd just stick with the DVD's and fanedits/preservations. But I think George has made it worth my while. At the end of the day, it's still Star Wars on Blu-Ray with tons of features we've never seen before.

And to clarify, I'm not particularly excited about these OT changes, I'm merely doing the old "Hey, it could be worse!" and it has been. These pale in comparison to the 1997 changes.

Just watch them on Youtube.  The new Yoda and the deleted scenes will be up there eventually.

I don't think that's the point though. I'm still hugely excited to have a big nice blu-ray boxset of the Star Wars films with 3 discs of special featues. But I'm a features hound. If they just sold the features for 90 bucks I'd probably buy it.

Right now, I'm having mixed feeling about the "Nooooo". On one hand it does add a feeling for Darth, who can no longer have the Emperor control him like a puppet, knowing his love for his son is more powerful. On the other hand, it is an insult to us fans who hoped the original scene would be left alone. The original will never be topped by another. I'm fine with the 2004 editions, but I hope thses changes to the Blu-Ray are the last time. Plus, one can hope this incident will convince George to full restore the original theatrical versions of the saga for Blu-Ray with NO changes. Incidentally, if and when I get a Blu-Ray player, I'm buying this set becuase to me, it's would an honor to have Star Wars in my collection. This has been My 2 Cents.

I'm not saying anything that hasn't already been said but I feel strongly about this as do all of you.

I cancelled my pre-order (and told Amazon why) and have gone through 20+ pages of reviews on Amazon, saying all the 1-star reviews were helpful and all the 5-star reviews were not.

After the 1997 and 2004 pointless and crap changes to the OT, further 2011 changes (eg Nooooo, krayt dragon) were to be expected. But Lucasfilm seems to have blatantly lied at their recent press event. The technical fixes only apply to those shots and not the entire films. There is no point to this official release, we're better off with the HD fan preservations.

I'm bummed about not getting the deleted scenes and even the PT for posterity (I think I already have all the old docs from preservations, I don't really need them in HD) but I'll live. Especially if the deleted scenes make it onto youtube soon.

And if I break down and crumble, I'll buy the box from eBay so Lucasfilm doesn't see a penny of my purchase and my demand for it isn't officially recognized.

The only way to stop GL's nonsense and get the technical restorations these films deserve is to vote with our wallets.

And in terms of spreading our opinion, we need to do it in a calm and rational manner. Otherwise we get written off as fanboys. We need to emphasis the lack of technical fixes (color timing, compression etc) and Lucasfilm's lies/misrepresentation of making those fixes rather than complain about a noise we hear for 2 seconds from an offscreen monster; again, that labels us as fringe crazies. While I agree completely about how the "Noooo" changes the emotional impact of that scene, the average joe reading about this change won't make that connection, or at least won't feel it so significantly. That alone would not be enough to turn them off this set.

Eternal thanks to all here who are keeping the faith alive. 1977-1983 forever!

Lurking around, I have noticed all the different versions of fan edits and I have to say I am mostly relieved that there are better ways to see the unmolested OT than the GOUT. My question is, which version would be considered superior and what is the best way to go about getting them?

I'd recommend Dark_Jedi's GOUT V3 DVD restoration, or his similar Blu-Ray set if you have the hard drive space/a Blu-Ray burner/the technical know-how to convert it to a high-def MKV and watch it somehow.

Here's the forum thread about both projects.  I've got the V3 DVD, and I must say it's really fucking impressive that DJ was able to make the GOUT look as good as he did.

3 Dics of special features that could not include the two biggest behind the scenes documentaries. Deleted scenes that we have seen before like the Biggs stuff has been out there for years and the more recent luke constructing his light saber scene that lucas claims was shot all those years ago. We have already seen that too....90 bucks for some half assed extras? If you wait about three months you will be able to pick up this set in the 40-50 dollar range.

To all those who support, or semi-support this release: YOU ARE PART OF THE FUCKING PROBLEM. The only way we have a chance of getting a proper release of the OOT is to refuse to purchase these films if they do not include it. If nobody bought these blu-rays, Lucasfilm would be shitting themselves and would release an...

You know what, fuck it. George probably wouldn't release the OOT just out of spite. Apparently the last time he viewed them publicly he was wincing and cringing when watching it. He fucking hates them because he has no fucking taste in good fucking movies anymore. TPM, AOTC, ROTS, Indy 4: they all point to this asshole's complete fucking idiocy, lack of restraint, and love for shitty and fucking unconvincing CGI.

So yes, go ahead and buy these for your oh-so-precious deleted scenes.
