Original colour of Luke and Obiwan's lightsabres

Were they blue or cyan? I always preferred the cyan colour myself.

"The original film prop hilts were constructed from old camera-flash cylinders. The 'switched-on' sword props were designed with the intention of creating an 'in-camera' glowing effect. The 'blade' was three-sided and coated with super-reflective material-- the same sort used for highway signs. A lamp was positioned to the side of the taking camera and reflected towards the subject through 45-degree angled glass so that the sword would appear to glow from the camera's point-of-view. A motor in the hilt caused the blade to spin so that a reflective surface was always presented directly to the camera. This also created the familiar 'flickering' effect. Ultimately, this process yielded unsatisfactory results and animation was employed to enhance the brightness of the sabers. It was at this point that the artistic decision was made to assign different colors to the blades."

If we're talking just about the original film, I would say both cyan and blue dependant on what scene you're seeing them in, on home video they have had all sorts of colors through the years, often green tinted in early video releases. 2004 was not the first time we had weird saber colors, though in that one it wasn't for the most part the same composites any longer.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

I prefer to go by the colour the blades were in their first scenes in the films. So, going by that, Luke's was cyan, and Ben's was azure (sky blue).

IMO Lucas should have stuck with that colour scheme going into TESB and then the PT.

I never realized Luke's lightsaber was cyan in A New Hope. I always assumed it to be the same as Ben's since it appears a similar tone in ESB. I suppose that's why it got so screwed up with the '04 color changes.

I have some film cels from SW- I'll have to check and see if there are any that show Luke's saber blade. I always thought his sword was the same color as Ben's, too. :-/

Well, the colour of Luke's saber in ANH is inconsistent between shots. I am positive it is cyan when Luke activates it for the first time, though.

Perhaps they flicker through slight changes in colour depending on lighting or angle-of-view?

Exactly.  The 3M material did that as far as i know.

The added glow was animation done frame by frame as far as i am aware through rotoscoping.

If you watch the 76 trailer you see that the prototype sabers a work in progress were white.

I always thought Luke's sword in Star Wars was White-Blue, more Solid Blue in Empire, and of course in Jedi he has that green one with a hilt like Obi's from star wars.

No no. I mean in-universe. Perhaps lightsabers just change colour slightly depending on certain conditions.

I know all about the materials and how the real world side of it worked. Sorry for the miscommunication.

Well they never did retcon the differences between the lightsaber hilts Luke uses in star wars and empire they are different.  Never mind that he had another different one in the hoilday special.

And they are all supposed to be the same star wars aka a new hope lightsaber.

Luke's saber is teal. Obi-wan's is electric blue.
