Only MC Spuds for denoising and LimitedSharpenFaster (both after the color correction).

The general workflow was:

  1. Rendering lossless versions of the clip with DeSratch and DeSpot (the latter one at 3 different strengths, so that I have 4 clips in the end: Unchanged, Despot at low settings, DeSpot at medium settings, DeSpot at high settings)
  2. Color correcting the clips and - depending on the amount of artifacts produced and detail killed - choosing which one to use for a scene (and since even the low settings DeSpot erased a lot of the stars in the scene shown in shots 3 - 5, I've used the unfiltered clip here).
  3. Rendering out the color corrected version as lossless video
  4. Filtering that output with MC Spuds and LimitedSharpenFaster, plus cropping and scaling it accordingly.

Ultimately, though, I didn't use the medium and strong DeSpot clips at all, since they produced too many artifacts. They are a good source though to manually paint out bigger dirt marks and hairs.

BTW Puggo, regarding cleaning up the reels, I've been curious about that. Is it too expensive and/or dangerous to clean the film itself, or are you just not interested?

It's not dangerous at all to clean the reels (unless there is sprocket damage or a lot of splices).  Actually, I do a quick cleaning to try and get the big pieces of lint off of it.  I'm not set up to do a really thorough cleaning, and even after cleaning, the film and the projector still attracts dust and hairs.  So often I have to stop a capture midstream, rewind a ways, clean out the gate, and continue.  Sometimes I don't notice something caught in the gate because it's too small to show up on the viewfinder, but is clearly seen when the image is blown up.  That is frustrating and happens a lot.  Also, after doing 5 or 6 captures, the film is getting dusty again.

Wow. I am very impressed with what Ady was able to do with the color correction. What is now possible is a darn near perfect looking film sourced ESB.

I hope you do release the work version Puggo. I still highly enjoy the non-corrected editions. Some of the tinkering ideas already presented here are imo worth checking into.

AND THERE WILL BE A RETURN OF THE PUGGO!!! AHHHHHHHH!!!!!

Take that freaking Blu-ray!

if you mean "... darn near perfect" in a mouse-dropping sort of way, I agree! :)

The secret to the success of the various Puggo editions is to lower expectations!

Yes. It's darn near perfect in a "real" (or should I say "reel") sort of way. Give me a battered print reduction any day. It's something tangible and has life and breath on a screen-even if it's a bedsheet.

Then again this is coming from a guy who gets excited over reel change markers. ;)

I now also like mouse droppings!

It's exciting to see people experimenting with the captures. I am happy to give a copy of the raw transfer to anyone who wants to play with it.

You would, really? I would love to have copies of SW and ESB when finished and an eventual Jedi if you are planning on doing that one as well, how would you share the raw files? how large are they? should I ask here, or should I PM you instead?

Thanks Puggo

The raw captures would fit on a 32G thumb drive.  Keep in mind that they are the wrong aspect ratio, the wrong speed, and aren't synched with any soundtrack, including their own optical (which was captured on a different machine).

all meaning both SW & ESB audio\video will fit on there, or 1 at a time? where is the best place to find one of these devices?

Thanks

No, just the raws for SW would fit on a 32G flash drive.  Actually, it would probably consume only 20-24G, but flash drives jump from 16G to 32G.

ESB would take another 20-24G.

By "thumb drive" I meant "flash drive".  Best Buy has 32G flash drives on sale for $39.99.

Count me in as soon as the transfer of Jedi is done as well ;)

By the way: a cheaper alternative to thumb-drives might be double-layer DVDs... under a dollar per piece, and one of your transfers fits on 3 discs.

I'm about 3/4ths of the way through the sound-sync of reel1.  Just thought I'd give a progress report  :)

Awesome possum! Can't wait to get my hands on this one!

I just wanted to reiterate how much I'm anticipating this. Untouched or cleaned up, it's bound to be a wonderful viewing experience. Though I must again say Laserschwert's work made the print almost remind me of the Evil Dead official blu-ray quality wise.

Best of all no CGI.

The real version of the movie Kershner made, not ruined by Lucas like the blu ray.

Cannot wait to see this and will wait for return of the puggo, with no cgi eye-blinks by wicket.

Hi Puggo,

I have a German Super-8 Full-HD scan of ESB. Would you be interested in this? The Quality is not great. It's heavy on the reds but I managed to tone it down in After Effects. Might be a nice addition to Puggo Strikes Back.
