I never thought I will EVER say this, but I want a color-corrected special edition and I'll be happy.

That's exactly how I see it.  I never held out much hope that Lucas would refrain from making further changes, but I did hope that some of the color issues would be fixed, and that at least the blacks wouldn't be crushed. I agree with pittrek: I would have settled for a color corrected 2004 SE from this release.

According to MF.com, Han and Greedo shoot at the same time and Han doesn't dodge anymore. Considering the luck we've been having, I think this is great news. That looked fake as hell.

These blu-ray rips are legit. i have just found the first alteration done to ROTJ. They have redone the Ewoks eyes. They have also added blinks.

This is the not the first thing you want to see in the morning. I think I'm going to be sick. Those eyes are scary as hell. Can you catch a frame with a blink?

Has Jabba been "cantina-ized", or was that just someone blowing smoke?

I keep hearing of leaked footage. Can we get a video link to a clip? I will not download the blu rays.

Oh for fucks sake. Give it a rest George.

I seriously hope these Chinese guys have only some "work in progress" version, the one which was source for the original trailer but I am VERY pessimistic :-(

Author

Really? Were you expecting no changes at all? These are the Special Editions.

I was originally expecting a colour-corrected 2004 version, but all the reviews made me feel very excited. Until today :-(

Having found the answer why the blu ray still have the same odd colors and wrong lightsabers:

"A lot of things that look a little different on HD or DVD are really the nature of how video treats color space."

It's as simple as this. There is no workaround for this. -sarcastic- again

Some quotes from the now famous restoration article on sw.com:

With the ... release on ... Blu-ray disc ..., a release that required meticulous optimization of picture and sound.

I don't buy this. This doesn't look like meticulous optimization of picture.

However, that is not to say that that work done for the 2004 release was simply ported over to Blu-ray.

No simple port? I don't buy this! What exactly was done to the video? I am not talking about content changes as a restoration articles should neither.

"It went through three phases of QC (quality control) processes," describes Diane Caliva, Production Manager for Media Operations at ILM.

After seeing the CHD video samples and snapshots I can only laugh on the 3 phases of quality control.

There are a handful of such technical shot corrections in addition to the cleanups throughout the films.

I buy it that you only made a handful (that is basically not more than 5) of technical shot corrections througout the films. With cleanup they probably only mean dirt removal and corrections of blemishes and warping on the image.

If the Special Editions are new drafts of Lucas' masterpiece, let's compare this to a book then.

In 1977, Lucas released a book. It was short and sweet, and people loved it. Twenty years later, he republishes it with some new chapters and some corrections here and there. The next time it comes up for republishing, he does the same thing, but this time something happened and now all of the text is at an angle. You can still read it, but its a pain. His readers point this out over and over again for 7 years, and that all they really want is the original novel. He ignores all these requests, only straightens the text in the parts people used as examples of crooked text, and adds more typo corrections. Instead of fixing the major problem, that people can't read it correctly, he's fixing typos that may or may not have been there from the beginning.

I do think its funny that they only fixed the EXACT SHOTS we used as complaints about the 2004. Do they not see that entire scenes need to be fixed, not just particular shots?

Egad! Were Wicket's eyes always that freaking creepy sans fakey blink?  The stills do not quite convey the horror of the video clip. I'll be seeing him in my nightmares tonight...

Can you give a link to the video clip of this Ewok enhancement please SilverWook?  I've a few comments I'd like to make about this when I have a little more time.  Thanks.

The eyes of the Ewoks were awful in the first place so I have no problem with being changed in a SE (even if these remind me of:

but like Ady said if they are to make further changes the least they could do is present the original elements not screwed up by tinkering.

However even if it was done really well it only underlines the added importance of including the original versions.

You'd think Lucas would want to do it if he is so proud of his latest SE so that people could compare them and see how much better his 'improvements' are.

I could even cope with creepy if it added something to the story but these just look cartoonish.

I like the idea of changing the Ewoks eyes to make them more believable and life-like. But the way they've done it makes 'em look so creepy!

This may be something we need to see in motion.

There's a link a few posts above,

I wouldn't be surprised if this effect only occurs here and all remaining Ewok footage untouched......Lucas does things in half measures

Yeah, instead of "creepy" I should have said "unnatural".

Like Jaitea said, there's a link. Check it, yo!

I think it looks pretty natural in motion. It's not a CG effect that stands out that much. In fact, it doesn't even look CG.

Wait, now we're angry that they are making more changes?   Boy, I can't keep up with what is an acceptable change and what isn't.

Oh, c'mon... that's the old "nobody will ever be satisfied" straw man.  It's really quite easy: in the absence of a decent release of the theatrical version, the only acceptable changes would be those that UNDO the changes that have been made between 1983 and 2006.

You're right, the effect isn't too bad. I just don't think those eyes match that creature. They seem to human to me. The original eyes looked more like a bears eyes and that seems just fine to me.

The original eyes looked like teddy bear glass eyes (made worse because the masks often didn't fit and you could see the actors behind them).

If the effect works (and I can't check it on this computer) good for them but to fix that and not fix the previous cock ups on the original elements is half arsed.

To be fair though, something like the Ewok eyes is no different to what Adywan has done. Granted Adywan also fixed a lot of things too.
