So, riddle me this. They scan the 1997 SE into their computers at 1080p, do the work, color correct it, etc. Alright, but it looks like they must have rescanned the original Jabba plates, because they moved Jabba around. It looks like they used the same Han going over the tail that they did in 97, but they redid Han's hands and shadows and such. Does this mean they had some of the actual files from 97, or did they re-rotoscope that whole scene and just so happened to have Han move over the tail identically to 97?

Just pointing out that a lot of work was done in the 04 SE that no one gets credited for. Between recreating this shot that took the original guys over a year to do and tracking the new extensions to the detention block, a bunch of people busted their butts over this movie and didn't get added to the credits. Most fan editors have more respect than that and credit people who made suggestions.

The top one. I don't know what it was with LFL in the 90's but they could not make younger versions of OT characters for anything (see: TPM Yoda).

Not that RotS Chewie is that much better... At least Digi-Yoda is close.

Great work on the photo-gallery that covers the revisionism in the making of book, you should make one on the making of Empire as well.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

I don't have Empire yet. I was actually waiting on the paperback, especially since Rinzler said on his blog that it wouldn't have SE pictures at all after someone (hint, hint) pointed it out to him. I'll probably grab the error version from the library again sometime to give it the same treatment, and actually scan the pictures from Star Wars instead of using my iPhone camera.

Ok, that is very nice. :)

Do you happen to know if they have revised the making of SW? IIRC, I read somewhere around the time of its release that he wanted to include more material that had surfaced as well as fixing a few errors.

The digital Yoda, though he registers to the casual viewer as Yoda, is so structurally and stylistically different from the OT puppet, it is like comparing the ANH/ESB with the RotJ stormtrooper helmet and calling them the same.

Sadly... it just seems like the thought behind it is that "angry" is the new "cool".  Gotta make him cool... and angry and kick-ass... oh... and wield a lightsaber.

I'd say the best of the CG Yodas is Episode 2. In three, he's small - even for Yoda. And Episode 1 suffers from Angry-syndrome, as discussed above.

I completely agree with you bkev. The prequel Yodas can't hold a candle to the original puppet. At least the AOTC Yoda seemed to be the right size and not always angry, I would have been find with him if not for the lightsaber battle at the end. ROTS Yoda looks too small and new TPM Yoda looks too angry. The original TPM Yoda looks... strange.

Nothing tops the original puppetry of the TESB and ROTJ Yodas

Maybe this is overkill and not necessary to include on your list as it already mention that the opening was redone three times, but I found it interesting that the digitally re-composited elements for the '97 SE differ in the same way that the 2004 lightsaber impacts did or the '97 saber impacts on the Falcon.

Original on top / SE below

(The color on these impacts is only green due to the overall bad color-timing on the 2004 transfer, they were all yellow in the '97 transfer.)

The 1981 re-release opening is identical to the original when it comes to these laser and blast elements.

Another finding:

http://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-cXhlgjNDkTo/Tl9xBg33M1I/AAAAAAAAIbA/gMVSW9MH64k/s800/Greedo-comp3.jpg

1997/2004/2011

It looks like Han has been shooting twice for almost 15 years. In 2004 they modified his body jump and moved both blasts up several frames so that Han starts earlier. If this 2011 capture is correct, they now cut to Greedo getting shot before the second blast happens, but the frames up to that point are identical from the 2004.

I'm sure us considering it a win is the only reason why they just didn't cut it out completely.

So Lucas have got that scene revised three times now? :) I wonder if he will finally get this scene right for the fifth attempt when they get their 3D release. It seems to be a complicated scene to get absolutely right.

If only there was a way to make it work and appease a majority of the fanbase, without using any CGI trickery...

The original 1977 film basically did exactly that. ;)

I also just realized we have almost become one year older since you started this thread. Damn, how time flies.

I've been updating the below post with whatever changes people say they have seen.  (some might be incorrect as it's usually just one person's pov)  Some have links to pic/vid if you'd like a placeholder.

One of the ESB changes mentioned is "the Falcon Cockpit is no longer zoomed in" can anyone confirm/deny that?
