What does the blu-ray set have to offer? — Page 2

To see the Biggs scenes in "normal" quality is for me a reason to buy it.

I do not blame you, but unfortunately that is one of the reasons Lucasfilm can continue on with the suppression of the original films.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

I did hear that they aim to keep the bitrate very high for the video, so that is definitely an improvement over what is out there now I'd say.

I'm hoping they do fix some of the crap they pulled in 2004, specifically the coloring and the sound mix for ANH.

I'd also wager that some folks on this forum may be more adept at creating an excellent mix for the trilogy than anyone at Lucasfilm.

“Alright twinkle-toes, what’s your exit strategy?”

New deleted scenes, probably for all six movies, in HD.

Say what you will, but that has me sold.

In my case, no, thanks. I've never seen an added scene in the original trilogy that did anything but mess up the pacing for me. Guess I'm forever locked in the mindset of the original theatrical runs. In fact, the Blu-ray set has absolutely nothing to offer to me.

Anybody else think it's sort of twisted/weird that they'll not release the original trilogy, BUT will release deleted scenes from the OT and most likely in HD too!!!? Just makes no sense, unless it also contains the deleted scenes that were changed for the SE's!

I'm still clinging to the idea that perhaps - just perhaps - they may include as deleted scenes all the original shots they cut out for the SE changes. This could well appear on the extra bluray disc available only with the 9 disc set. These extras would then ensure that many of us OT fans would end up buying it just for those scenes. So we wouldn't get the original trilogy versions per-se, but we would have all the un-changed scenes in HD quality. At this point this is the only way I can see George grudgingly giving people what they want, but not the way they want it.

Yeah I know it's probably wishful thinking... but surely George must realise he's running out of ways to keep selling & re-selling the same old shit time and time again.....

Fingers and toes crossed!

I don't plan on buying this set (even if I did happen to have a blu-ray player by September, which itself is doubtful), I do wonder...

Will it have Audio Descriptive tracks?

REALITY CHECK TIME:

Let's not be dreamers here though. Unless you get it first hand from an official source, just assume that whatever feature or cut or scene that you WISH was in it, will NOT be there. The odds that a feature that the fans actually WANT would be in there but not be advertised, is approaching ZERO.

That should save some headaches and people wasting their money.

As far as I'm concerned, this is just going to be the 2004/2005 DVDs in 1080p, and Episode I will be "different" (but not better, in the sense that it's still Episode I, the weakest of the "live action" numbered episodes). I also fully expect the OT extras to be heavy on fluff like the extras on the DVDs were. There's a lot of stuff for Lucas to advertise, like the TV shows, the 3D releases, whatever LucasArts titles are coming out (the Old Republic?), etc.

Remember; 6 months to a year after this release, there WILL be a blu-ray double dip. This is not your "only chance." Remember also that you'll be able to rent this thing, and last but not least, remember the world won't end in 2012. ;)

Chances are this isn't the last time he'll be tinkering with the movies again either. Remember, he's got another six years of theatricl re-tooling to do, which are more opportunities for him to "realize his original vision" and cash-in with another home release.

Take it from somebody who has lived through all the various home releases...

The best case scenario I can see is that in about 7 months I'll be reading some reviews, seeing some screen caps, reading some rants, and watching some clips on youtube, and then perhaps a year from now, I'll see them on the shelf at my local library and then decide if I want to watch them for free, some rainy day, if I haven't been put off by all the reports from disappointed fans by then... ;)

What does to the Blu-Ray set has to offer according to ThiefCobbler4ever:

-The 6 films in their DVD Versions. No alterations, no changes, no nothing.

-However, color correction (even though I have no problem with the transfers we have now) could be applied and the lightsabers fixed.

-Transfer quality looking better, sharper, and highest in quality, it will blow the DVD transfers away.

-Extras from all DVD releases, Laserdisc releases, VHS releases and anywhere else. Every last one.

-The deleted scenes from ANH (that we seen time after time) brilliantly restored

-Classic documentaries finally making the official digital debut.

-New extras can't hurt either.

-Hopefully that some of the money we paid goes to do a proper and tender, loving, caring restoration to the theatrical versions of the OT (and maybe the PT).

-Also the possibility of bringing the Ewok Adventures and the Clone Wars Micro-Series to Blu-Ray individually. after the Saga release.

TPM will/should have the digital Yoda that's been bandied about.

I will be very surprised if this happens. I will buy this set if the "collars" are fixed.
-Transfer quality looking better, sharper, and highest in quality, it will blow the DVD transfers away.
That's a given.
-Extras from all DVD releases, Laserdisc releases, VHS releases and anywhere else. Every last one.
Doesn't seem Lucas' style. Especially since they might include things that aren't exactly true anymore.
-The deleted scenes from ANH (that we seen time after time) brilliantly restored
I would believe, as hurtful as it is to have deleted scenes from a cut that doesn't exist anymore.
-Classic documentaries finally making the official digital debut.
See above.
-New extras can't hurt either.
It will probably be all-new extras.
-Hopefully that some of the money we paid goes to do a proper and tender, loving, caring restoration to the theatrical versions of the OT (and maybe the PT).
More like it will go towards the 3Dification of the rest of the prequels, which will drop off before the OT due to "lack of interest".
-Also the possibility of bringing the Ewok Adventures and the Clone Wars Micro-Series to Blu-Ray individually. after the Saga release.
I'm sure those were mastered in SD, so a BD release would add nothing but more episodes per disc.

I want this release. I want the original versions restored, but I love Star Wars enough to go with the changes. Plus, I'm an extras hound. Nine discs for a film series with only six films? Can't go wrong with that. I hope a few minor picture fixes are done, like some lightsaber stuff, but I can't wait for this release.

You and me both, buddy. This'll be exactly like the DVD set with me; I'll want the extras, but can't justify the purchase as I'd never watch these versions of the films. I'm mostly wondering what can of messing they'll do this time.

I might consider the prequel set down the road, as I'm not as purist on those, but I doubt I'll get the classic set myself. Shame too, since I should be frothing at the mouth for these. They're just not going to have the films I love.

There will probably be a way to buy the extras discs separately, like there was with the bonus disc from 2004.

For a long time, you could find it for $3 on amazon.

And in those screencaps in the previous page. I have to say the color has significantly been corrected back to how it should look. It still looks too dark in some scenes and some details such as shadows on people's faces still look too pronounced. But it doesn't look over the top flat out wrong.

Can't say that the color is tinted properly everywhere. Hoth still looks too blue. But it's far more reasonable and not so extreme.

Take back the trilogy. Execute Order '77

All the SE tinkering has left me cold for this release, when I should be absolutely PSYCHED.  Give me the originals restored for Blu-Ray... not this silly crap.

Steven Spielberg gave us both versions of ET - original and SE.  And multiple versions of Close Encounters.

Ridley Scott gave us ALL versions of Blade Runner.

Everyone else can clean and restore old movies for Blu-Ray... but not Lucas, because the originals are not his "vision".  Lame.

Ah, it seems George lost a little bit more of his mind.  Digital Yoda in Ep1 was merely the tip of the iceberg.  ROTJ has a couple of staggeringly stupid changes this time around - the Ewoks now have new eyes that blink because...?

But easily the worst part is that Vader now lets out not one, but two NNNOOOOOOO's as he throws the Emperor down the shaft.  After all, everybody loved that in ROTS, so why not do it again?  And thus a formerly poetic moment now got stupid.  Does Richard Marquand have an estate that can sue over this shit?

Just saw that. Unsurprised at the Ewoks, since CBS did the same with the Gorn in the Star Trek remasters as a cheap way to "add more life" to them, but the "Nooo" is really left field. Vader's silence was perfectly fine, and resonates more. He's making his choice, and no time to articulate it there. The no is meaningless melodrama. It's not horrid, but completely unnecessary.

And I'm a guy that absolutely loves the Radio Drama's take on the scene. In that, he's screaming, "MY SOOOONNNN!" and has a great dialog with the Emperor about putting him down. What makes it is the line about Palpatine being Vader's master, but not Anakin Skywalker's.

We're also getting that new Krayt Dragon call. Who knows what else.

On the plus side, they sound like they might color time it properly this time, and have fixed the swapped music.

Just saw the clip with the NOOOOOOO.  O.M.G.  Talk about a throwback to a ridiculously stupid moment and sound from RotS.

I'll not be buying the Blu Ray set. To get the extras of SW, ESB, & ROTJ, you HAVE to buy the set with all 6 films. I don't want the damn prequels, having them on DVD is bad enough.

I forgot how that played out... Wow, that was good, wasn't it?

I like CG yoda in TPM and the blinking Ewoks, although seeing as TPM is my least favorite of the saga and I always thought the Ewoks are silly, that's not really the biggest of consolations. I hate the new audio stuff they added, and if anything I was hoping that Lucas would listen to some of the criticisms and change back Boba Fett's voice (speaking of which, does anyone know if they still have the phoned-in overdub in there?), but instead we get an even sillier Kraayte Dragon scream and Darth Vader's "NOOOOOOOOOOOO!" now ruining the ending of ROTJ. It sounds like Lucas was more interested in tweaking the artistic aspects of the film to suit his more recent tastes than he was in actually cleaning up the film, because I hear that there are still plenty of color errors all over the place.

My room mate is picking up his copy of the Saga tonight, and we're going to have a marathon of the whole thing so I will have a chance to see for myself what has been fixed, and what has been meddled with. I am actually a bit of an apologist for some of the "enhancements" Lucas has made over the years, because I am all for making the movies look prettier-- as long as the original version is still available, and Lucas is only fiddling with things that there was no money or technology for originally, and not compromising the artistic choices of the original version. To me, inserting CG ships and making the creatures look more alive is an "enhancement," but having Greedo shoot first or replacing actors is changing, and changes really boil my butt because they are undermining the original artistic intent instead of enhancing it.

The Blu-Ray still does not have the original versions of the films, and Lucas has made even more daft changes, so I'm not exactly in a rush to go buy it (my current financial situation doesn't help either, though). If anything though, hopefully we'll get a Blu-Ray version of ROTJ Revisited now that a low-compression 1080p source is available.

I will stay away from the blu-ray set solely because Lucas did it again. He again released a completely ruined/edited version of the original trilogy. Movies as good as the OT do not deserve that.

WOW! I'm watching A New Hope right now, and the Blu-Ray really makes it obvious how bad Lucas has fucked up the colors. There were a few instances where I actually had to check to make sure the color on my TV wasn't going out.
