Great stuff.  Love seeing the realness of all that.  Funny how different the world was back then.  No super security, aliases, decoy film titles...

Wasn't Blue Harvest the decoy title for Star Wars?

That does seem familiar.  But why a decoy for an unknown franchise in the 70s?  Something seems weird about that.

Kind of funny that they used the Star Wars font and logo shape.  With the real-time  uber-connectivity of today, I don't think you could do that.  Instead of people being fooled as they approached a location shoot - they'd be using it as the banner art for their nerd blog.

Death Valley, I imagine, has seen it's share of death over they years but I imagine Buttercup Valley was named by an Englishman.

Exactly, there's some good quote by Charles Lippincott or Alan Ladd saying to the effect that the studio had problems with the title because in their surveys people thought the movie was going to be fights between famous people like Elizabeth Taylor.

Elizabeth Taylor infamously fought with herself through the years and sometimes won.

Can't speak for the franchise, but Star Wars was hyped long before it was released.  I remember the buzz starting many months in advance if not longer, and being really excited when it was about to come out.

Interesting.  I don't remember pre-hype like that. I was only 14 in 1976 and not really a convention goer just yet.  That would be a year or so later.

That original logo was very cool looking.  Many years ago when I was in IT and had an office not open to the general populace of the company, I made a full-size one-sheet using a high-res version of an early McQuarrie idea. It had that logo.

Nice. :) The various logos for Star Wars have always fascinated me. This is a great page that cover every early incarnation of the logo: http://theswca.com/relics/prerelease/

I always had a soft spot for the early "pointy W" logo:

and for this rarely used/seen hybrid:

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

By the way, the title of this thread is a little silly. I never thought they didn't film the Barge scenes, you know?

Are there people who think the barge scenes weren't filmed? :-P That's one conspiracy theory I haven't heard of.

RotJ.  "Blue Harvest - Horror Beyond Imagination

A promotional patch to throw off onlookers.

IIRC, Bantha Tracks once had those patches for sale after ROTJ was through filming. I might have one stashed away somewhere.

I love this. Back when film sets looked real because they were real.
