Fuck yeah TPB!

The last season can be a bit of a chore, what with Jacob and Phil Collins being pushed to the forefront in the absence of Cory and Trevor, but Say Goodnight to the Bad Guys (post-S7 special) and Countdown to Liquor Day (post-SGTTBG movie) both more than make up for the lackluster final season.

I've watched it all now! I very much agree with this too. The last season was not really up to scratch compared to the rest. Fuckin' alien Trevors.

Anyone here watch Eureka? It's actually one of my wife's faves. It's back on and the episodes have been pretty decent. It's more like a warm sweater these days than... you know... some exciting new shirt or something.

We would have watched this season (for Wil Wheaton and Felicia Day), but SyFy has it in their heads that Hulu is out to get them, so they only update a few episodes at a time months after the season is over. Now that its getting cancelled, I doubt they'll even have that luxury.

What is it with the networks that own Hulu not wanting to use it, or only allow streaming certain shows to your computer and not your devices. I can run adblock on my computer, I actually watch your ads FULL SCREEN when I watch on my Xbox, which I'm more than happy to in order to see new shows.

I can't believe I forgot to add Da Ali G Show to my list of funniest shows!  It's sorta overshadowed by the movies now (in the majority view), but my god was that show funny.

005- have you looked into PlayOn? You have to pay an annual subscription now, but it's key in our "no cable, no satellite (and soon to be) no netflix" plan.

Its one of those "too-good-to-be-true" things for me. Paying a third party to get content on my Xbox that MS already offers seems wrong. I'll have to read up on it.

The Walking Dead, Doctor Who (Classic and Current), Sherlock Holmes (Jeremy Brett) and Top Gear. Currently watching POIROT, the David Suchet one.

I like this analogy, though Eureka might be too light-hearted to be a heavy sweater. Summer pyjamas?

UK series or US? The UK version is funnier where it counts. A lot of ideas were repeated in the US version but didn't work quite as well. The original UK Borat segments are funny as hell. I didn't think much of the Borat movie compared to those.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I paid $10 or $20 for it a couple of years ago before there was an annual fee. That makes me a "basic" member for life, but some of the "advanced" features are walled off to me. I haven't yet decided if it's worth $20 a year for them...

For <$2 a month, it will let you stream media from your PC to your mobile phones/pads/whathaveyous/whatisits... even over 3G.

I tried it on my google phone last night, but my optimus doesn't support flash, so it was a no go.

bkev had me watch Cowboy Bebop.

Usually I'm not a big anime guy (in fact I've never really watched it), but WOW this was amazing. In fact, my reaction to it comprised mostly of positive expletives.

The truth. He was shocked and possibly appalled when I told him it only got better, I don't even like the first episode. Full recommendation post from me coming someday.

In other threads I have mentioned how anime has never been able to grab me in the slightest. I find it tends to be annoying and obnoxious even when it is at its least annoying and obnoxious. Someone described Cowboy Beebop to me and I thought it sounded really cool, so I watched three or four episodes, but just couldn't get into it.

Concerning the whole anime thing, a few weeks ago I watched an episode of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood with a friend of mine and actually found myself really enjoying it. So I watched the next episode, and enjoyed it too. Then I watched a couple more and found it getting on my nerves. Seriously, why does everyone of these dumb cartoons have to include dumb, annoying, and obnoxious things in it? What is with the over the top campy Japanese humor? I have a feeling that was probably one country that could really appreciate Jar Jar Binks. Tingle from the Zelda games was perceived as painfully creepy and weird by American audiences, yet in Japan he was so damn popular he got his own spin off title.

I'm sorry, "The Doctor". My mistake, I'm new at this.

C3, I'm going to have to be that guy who implores you to give it another shot. Episode 5 is one of the best in the series, and actually where it beings to develop a less story-of-the-week plot. To each his own of course.

Me too. Beebop is really good. At least like it for the theme song. ;-)

CP3S, I'd stick with Bebop until at least episode 5 ("Ballad of Fallen Angels"), as bkev said.

And I love FMA: Brotherhood, but I definitely see what you mean about the obnoxiousness.  The first Fullmetal Alchemist series has less of this, but the story's all fucked cos they caught up to the manga and decided to branch off into their own story about halfway through, whereas Brotherhood follows the manga the entire way, quite faithfully.

And I have to say, those are the only two (three? if you count the two FMAs separately) anime series that I can stand to watch.  So I'd recommend sticking with at least Bebop.  Hell, it's only 26 half-hour episodes, and it really doesn't have the ridiculous crap that FMA:B does.

--edit--

Also, are you watching the English dubs or Japanese with English subtitles?  The dub of Bebop isn't bad, but I'd recommend watching either FMA series in Japanese.  I can't stand the dubs for those.

If you've never watched Eastbound & Down before I think you'd really enjoy that as well.  It's two seasons deep right now and the third/last is airing this year.  Other hillarious comedies I'd recommend to anyone:

  • Louie
  • It's Always Sunny in Philidelphia
  • Arrested Development
  • Curb Your Enthusiasm
  • Seinfield
  • Summer Heights High
  • 30 Rock
  • Tim & Eric Awesome Show Great Job!
  • Da Ali G Show

I liked Eastbound & Down, but not nearly as much as TPB. Still have to check out Tim and Eric, and I was surprised that I'd never heard of Summer Heights High even though it is Australian.

In addition to Better Off Ted, I recommend Bored to Death if you haven't seen it.

I tried to watch Bored to Death, but it left me exactly that - bored... to death.  I got halfway through the first season and gave up.

As for Summer Heights High, I'm surprised it's not huge over there, it's so funny!  Creator/writer/actor/etc. Chris Lilley is one of the funniest people on the planet - he plays multiple characters that are focused on in documentary style.  His first show We Can Be Heroes: Finding the Australian of the Year was great too, and he just came out with a third, Angry Boys (which I've yet to see).  They're all one-season shows, so they're easy to watch too.

They are the English dubs. My friend has the entire run of the original FMA with English subs and audio tracks in Japanese and English, but he only have the English dubs of Brotherhood.

After watching those few episodes of Brotherhood, I watched the very first episode of the original FMA and kind of liked how much more adult it felt. The violence was much more gruesome and less stylized too. My friend told me not to even consider messing with the original FMA, because of how crappy it gets after it diverts from the manga.

Hmm, sounds like I need to watch episode 5 of Cowboy Beebop. Cowboy Beebop was really disappointing, because after having it described to me I really wanted to like it. Sounds like I might have given up on it one episode or so too soon.

Yeah, the first 4 episodes are pretty standalone (though they do introduce Ein and Faye), but you really get a glimpse of Spike's backstory and the loose arc for the rest of the series in episode 5.

Alternatively, you could check out the Cowboy Bebop movie.  It's set after episode 22 (or thereabouts), but it's a standalone - not referenced in the series at all, and it was produced afterwards.  Basically, it's outside the continuity of the series.

But it's just as good as the series.  So if you don't like the movie, I seriously doubt you'll enjoy the rest of the show.
