Possible Non-SE screening of ROTJ in Modesto,CA?

Author

The 'granted permission' bit wouldn't fill me with too much confidence but it would be interesting to find out if permission was being given to show a non-SE print.

My guess is it'll be the '97 SE if it's really 35mm, which is still miles better than the most recent version... I'd certainly go.

Interesting, (and it's in George's hometown) but I think the listed running time is a little bit off! ;)

It's in LucasLand so that's how they got access to a 35mm print. It can't be let outside a 10 mile radius most likely. The runtime is regularly 135 for the SE, but IMDB does state the original runtime is the site listed 134 minutes. Could it be...?

If it is then there is definite proof of an original existing in some kind of reference quality. They can't refute there is at least a copy of ROTJ floating about.

If it actually will be 35mm then it's likely the 97 but you never know...check it out nadcraker!

It would lend credence to the theory no film print of the 2004 versions exist.

Might just be a coincidence, there was an outdoor showing of RotJ in Brooklyn last week as well.

I am defitely going to go check it out, if only for the experience of some form of classic Star Wars on the big screen.  I am too young to have seen the original theatrical run.

The State is a cool theater anyway, so I like to support them.

I'm going to this as well, even if it is the 97se there's no way I could miss the opportunity to see Sebastion Shaw's head restored to its proper place in its full resolution. ^_^

Wait ... that doesn't make much sense.

For those who are wondering, it was the '97 SE. Before the showing, the manager said that the provider of the 35mm print had connections with Lucasfilm, so I wasn't terribly shocked. Still, it was in higher quality than I'd ever seen ROTJ,  and I enjoyed it very much. There were light scratches near the beginning, and a very slightly shaky picture around the same time, but it improved greatly later on in the film. (There were no enslaved Leia costumes in their contest... :( Oh well.) It was overall a superb experience.

Yeah, too bad about that.  I'd forgotten how nauseating the sarlac's beak looked.  It also had some minor fading in certain parts, and a slight green tint, but nonetheless I found it fracking incredible, at least once the abominable Jedi Rocks had finished.

This was my first time ever seeing any version of star wars on actual film(Except tpm, but that doesn't count), and I don't think I've ever seen special effects presented more convincingly.  The space battle was fucking epic.  None of the releases I've ever seen have ever conveyed that sense of depth in the moving starfields and ships, and the resolution was obviously fantastic.  Despite all of the flaws of the cg and and the print's passage through time, never before has it seemed so strongly that its right there happening before my eyes.

Thank you so much, Nadcraker for pointing this out, this was really a one of a kind experience for me.

Yay! The 97-she exists! But fading already? What, do they purposefully mishandle and improperly store prints so that they deteriorate? Maybe these prints all sit in a Fox vault. Sounds like what an art house will typically get from a studio for a weekend rental.

If any LFL people read this: just transfer the original SE!

Any idea if it was shown in Dolby or DTS?

I have a feeling that they were shown a print from the '97 run that was quite used, so that would explain why there's some wear. They wouldn't mint a new print just for the occasion.

In fact, on a separate note, I'm wondering what version of ESB will be shown on Star Wars Day in Giants Stadium (San Francisco, CA).

Hey guys.  Compyislife and i551 already said it, but it was an awesome experience.  I went with one of my friends who had never seen the SE version of ROTJ, and he was shocked and disappointed by the new cgi, but both of us couldn't be cynical enough to not cheer and clap at key moments in the movie.

Having grown up with the VHS versions of the movies, it was amazing to see on the big screen, and it did look very clean and sharp, and the film grain and jumpiness of the picture only added to the charm.

The best part were all the kids that showed up, in costume or just with light sabers. A few of them would light them up whenever Luke lit his up onscreen, very awesome.  One little girl made my day when she saw the bounty hunter show up in Jabba's palace and she cried out "That's Leia!".  It got a chuckle out of the audience, it was damn cute.

And you know what I thought when I saw everyone that showed up to pack this theater and celebrate a movie that is almost 30 years old?  No one, especially the little kids, would give a damn if the movies were still the same as they were in 77-83.  It would still be just as popular, and the kids would still love them just as much.

Nadcraker, I forgot to mention it, but thank you tremendously for starting this topic and alerting me of the screening. Otherwise, I wouldn't have known it was happening. Also, what a great point on the subject of the films' age!
