Guys look. I don't think he's saying the BD shots are mock-ups, but the DVD shots are mock-ups made to the same size as the BDs.

In later parts I'll discuss answers to why no original cuts, why some documentaries were left off and other questions. I had set my expectations accordingly about the original versions of the film, but going in was still concerned about the overall package. After seeing it, a lot of work went into this release and it shows. Just to set expectations in the end, I will be buying this set and I will recommend it to others. Is everyone going to be happy with it? Nope. Some people (Carlo) will decide to vote with their wallet and that is fine.

Other issues we address:  You know how things just look different when they go into HD or DVD, just by the nature of how the video treats the color space?  A perfect example is in 2004 with the light sabers, how in the original trilogy all of the light sabers sort of dimmed, you lost that really hot, white core.  Well, we went back and wanted to really be true to the original intention of the films, so we brightened up the light saber colors and we brought back that hot, white core that was original to the film.

Oh, now I get it.  The lightsabers got screwed up because of the way things go into DVD, just by the nature of how the video creates the color space...

Wait, what?

Yeah well they'll never just say, "Sorry we screwed up!", but as long as they are finally (hopefully) going to be fixed, who cares, right?

And I know I'm in the minority here, but I just want six matching films that look like they were filmed in episode order, and fit together, even though I was born in 76 and grew up with SW.

I just saw some HD film clips from the bluray release posted on rebelscum.com and I'm concerned. Watching the opening of A New Hope I was very sad to see the blaster fire between the star destroyer and the blockade runner looks to be suffering from the same problems created by the Lowry Digital "remastering" from the previous DVD releases. Have they not done a new High Definition remastering of the films? Are we just getting HD transfers of the Lowry garbage we all complained about last release?

Sabers look better on a homemade rotoscoped youtube video of kids than the 2004 dvds.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Oh yeah, it chewed up the stars and the lasers. Somebody involved in the blu-ray must have noticed that by now right?

If that clip is real, all of the de-saturation, oversaturation, black level crushing and mis-tinting of 2004 is totally unchanged. It looks to me like it doesn't even have the gamma boost, so I'm suspecting this is fake.

In fact, I am beginning to suspect that anything posted by anyone outside of official promotions is unreliable. Even the official stuff is only sort-of reliable, it seems.

Pagz: In late 2003, Lucasfilm did an HD telecine of the films, which they colour-corrected, added new effects to and had cleaned by Lowry. The 2004 DVD set was a standard-def downconversion of that. The HD version was always intended to eventually become the highest-quality master (i.e. for blu ray), but it seems they did attempt to fix a couple issues people complained about by taking that master and tweaking it ever so slightly.

Someone mentioned before--these are the masters being used for the 3D conversion. I wonder therefore if the extra brightness boost is not actually an attempt to fix anything but merely compensating for the dulling quality of the polarized 3D glasses. Michael Bay did this already with TF3--he boosted the brightness of the master so that when audiences saw it in 3D it would have the same luminance as a regular 2D print. I mean, even TPM is way brighter, slightly unnaturally so in some shots, and it never had any of the dullness and black crushing issues of the OT.

That clip was official, posted on the StarWars youtube channel.

I wonder what's going to happen to the 3D conversions what with the 3D fad already on its way out. They won't even have episode II done before it's a thing of the past... again.

Yikes then. I was hoping maybe they fixed more than I had anticipated but I guess not. That scene is one of the most important ones in the film and it is completely visually neutered. It would be great for viewers if this is another one of those "not final version" official peeks, although I doubt it since the scene would have to be re-transfered from scratch in the easiest scenario. Otherwise you have to uncrush the blacks, amp up the gamma, re-do the starfields, re-roto the lasers and engines individually, somehow fix that blue engine haze (no idea how) and then properly colour time it all. Yeah, not likely to happen. Maybe we'll get one of the above.

Also, is the sound mix new or is it just me? It sounds like the music is even lower in the mix, but to be fair I haven't heard the 2004 mix in a long time.

Good question. Interesting point raised.

That could actually be true... I never thought of it that way. People would be complaining so much if the 3D was dark, as the 2004 DVDs were already somewhat dark due to overcontrasting.

Despite reservations about 3D, I do hope the whole series gets re-released since it will open Star Wars up to theaters again for a whole new generation... Hopefully, it won't look too awful.

Tidbits and “But I saw it at Comic-Con…”

I reported earlier that the “Humdinger Glitch” has been fixed.  There have been a lot of people inquiring as it was in the footage that was seen at Comic-Con.  I was told that someone from Lucasfilm overheard an attendee at Comic-Con comment after seeing the footage that “the glitch is still there”.  They tracked it down and had it fixed.  It was one of the last if not THE last change made prior to the discs being locked down for final release.

I read part I and part II, also I read another preview of Blu-Ray:

http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articles/starwarsbds/preview.html

Some of you may recall that on the 2004 DVD, when the X-Wings begin their dive down to the Death Star, the familiar John Williams trumpet fanfare was buried in the mix so you could barely hear it. No longer! The trumpets ring true in the Blu-ray mix loud and clear. When I heard this, I couldn't help thrusting my arms up in the air in a bit of happy relief. I then turned to Matt (Wood), who as it happens was standing right next to me, and saw him give a little smile and nod - he knew exactly what I was reacting to. When I leaned over to thank him for fixing it, his simple reply made me smile as well: "Trust me, I read the blogs too..."

I think he is visiting OT.com and maybe he is hiding under some nickname.

Why Didn’t You Ask About the Original Series?

I did, and I was politely given the answer I expected, the same one that has been given before: This is the vision that George Lucas has for his films….

Q:  On the DVD, the orchestra for the surround channels was swapped, was that fixed?

A:  It’s funny, because it never really was an error --- what happened back then was that the music master we had at the time didn’t have any surround information.  One of the techniques that has been used previously from mixers is to give it a bigger soundstage---they would have flipped the back channel to give it a different kind of reverb.  And that was done on the THX 1138 remaster, which I didn’t work on.  For this go-round (6.1) we decided not to do that, so the surround information is direct to the back, no longer flipped on the music track.

Yeah, deliberate creative....

So, I came to a conclusion: BIG, BIG THANKS to ADYWAN, HARMY AND OTHER OT Artist for forcing Lucasfilm to make this changes. Really. Without you, they would say everything is all right with 2004 DVD. BUT with your edits, they saw that they cannot lie anymore and they have to do something. GREAT!!!

Ady - You were worried about cyan tint over Hoth - there is still hope they fixed that:

While I am fairly sure that they originated from the digital files, they should not be used to look for DNR, crushed blacks, resolution levels, or to find Waldo, but they should be used to see that there is no longer a puppet pole showing, that light sabers have changed, that there is more picture information on Episode I, and to represent the concept that a lot of work has gone into this release to fix issues from the previous DVD release.  Any other use is not recommended or implied.  Hopefully that will squelch any controversies, but since this is Star Wars, I may be expecting too much. smile.gif

There is still a chance they fixed the "colars".

I'm waiting for "our" members to deal with those new informations, because I'm very exited now.

We also learned that TPM was done from digital files (we were all wondering if there was a DI from TPM).

There are also some sad things:

Q:  Was there any thought given to archiving previous tracks like the 6-track master from the 70mm prints or the 78 mono remix?  Any thought given to putting them on the Blu-ray?

A:  Yes, we have those and they’ve all been digitized.  I don’t know if they considered putting those on the Blu-ray.  That might be more of a question for Marketing, it may be an issue of space.  It’s funny because I play those other audio tracks, like the scene when R2 and C3PO have been left on Tatooine and they walk through the canyon.  I just love that on the current mix, you can actually hear the quiet, when R2 is lonely, going through the canyon.  I played the original mix and it’s FULL of hiss and totally brittle, so it’s fun now to hear it like George wanted it to really be, what was intended.

So they have the restored 1977 70mm sound. Now all we need is that they scan the original elements from the negative, incorporate them into SE negative and release it on BD with lossless sound. Sadly, this will probably never happen.

I figure they'll do the OT-release eventually, and the original sound is for that.

So LFL actually "revisited" the movies and fixed some little errors for this 2011 version... Interesting.

Nice to know the mockup of the Wampa arm was a mockup, its pretty bad. The lightsabers posted seem to have better coloring than the one from the new trailer, which I'm going to also blame on the mockup.

I cannot wait for it to come out in the UK, giving them 4 days to review it for us before it comes out here. I just had a huge rant in front of my wife about how we won't be buying this set, but my morbid curiosity of what they bothered to change or what they didn't especially in light of the Revisited changes may get the better of me. I know there are still things Revisited will have that the officials won't, but I'm still interested.

Tell me that Lucasfilm is not reading OT.com:

Yea, right... Sorry, I don't believe that. They read it here (theory with Kenkraly being Matt Wood isn't so crazy) and fixed it. Considering that this glitch was spotted not so long ago and they made it on time, well, hard to believe.

Interesting that those mockups aren't watermarked on Digital Bits. Were they Home Theater Forum mockups, or were they handed out by LFL?

EDIT: sorry, they were handed out by LFL. Wow, what is up with the curve at the end of the Wampa arm?

Another review:

(there should be 10 or so of these reviews, so post'um when you learn of them.  *EDIT* ok probably less, maybe 2-4 internet outlets and 3 magazines and another 3-4 newspapers..)
