It was great because there were other people (Kurtz, Marcia Lucas, Kazanjian, Kerschner, etc.) who really made the important creative contributions. Lucas had the general idea but those people made it work. When Lucas decided he'd rather focus on a toy empire, he got rid of everyone who challenged him creatively and surrounded himself with sycophants.

But, we're all posting on this forum because we already know this, so I don't know why I'm saying it.
