There is a difference between a holocaust (literal or metaphorical) and THE Holocaust (which should be only evoked metaphorically with extreme care).
Holocaust can just refer to destruction on a large scale of anything.
In which case it can, arguably be used as a metaphor for what is happening to the original version of these films.
Even rape (which in it's legal context also should be evoked with some care as a metaphor) can also refer to any act of spoiling and destruction could be used to describe what is happening here.
It's more problematic with the word rape because it's non-sexual, non-legal usage has fallen low in common parlance but holocaust is still frequently used outside of reference to the historical event.
