Hi everyone, This may be off topic, but it is related to ESB ... I just saw the new teaser for the upcoming Star Wars Blu-ray set , and in Luke/Vader confrontation cloud city, vader's lightsaber is still pink in ESB. what a shame .. What a shame !

^Nice! (you guys probably don't know me...:P)
I remember this thread with affection and the discussion that lead to it.
Other than that (and that you had been living in Japan during the quake, had access to a Nintendo DS, smoke cigars and were making music as Vlantis possibly with a sanshin) your fame has yet to reach the "oh crumbs that's who you are" side of my brain parts.
Not sure what that has to do with the doughnuts? :-D
Long time no post, but I did a topic search and found nothing on this idea posted previously, so I'm going to ask about it.
In this scene, when Vader swings his saber down to hit Luke and misses, you can hear his saber hit the floor. However, nothing visual happens during the strike to the floor. No sparks, no light from sparks, nothing.
In later scenes when Luke and Vader's sabers strike walls and handrails, there are either sparks or cuts. The same for Return of the Jedi when Luke hits the handrails before defeating Vader, there were sparks flying each time his saber hit the handrails.
I provided screencaps to show this.
Saber just before striking floor:
Saber hitting floor:
Cut to next shot, same moment of saber striking floor:
Vader's saber lifting off the floor after strike, as Luke begins to roll down stairs:
I would have done a mockup, but I wouldn't know how to create sparks, if they would be visible. But if no sparks would be visible, at least the flash of light from the sparks should be, right?
Thanks for reading.

I was thinking a bit more subtle, but that's definitely the right idea!
Ady, I know you do sound after completely finishing the visual side of things, but after watching the scene again (with the volume up this time) the lightsaber strike sounds less like a saber hitting metal grating and more like metal hitting metal.
Maybe that can be changed? Just a thought. Thanks.
And I'm sorry to hear of the things happening in your life as of late. My condolences.

Question: Will you (Ady) be using the Blu-rays as the basis, rather than the HDTV recordings? I remember some sign that some of the crushed blacks might be slightly better in the upcoming discs, plus the bit-rate will definitely be higher.
I think Ady already said that he would be using the Blus. I guess he could even re-render stuff for ESB:R by simply using the Blu-Ray footage seeing as it will be the same basic transfer - although as it seems there will be more colour changes (screw-ups) he'd have to redo the colour correction.
I don't think the minor bitrate upgrade after being downgraded to 720p would be worth starting over on the color correction. And have we seen proof that they haven't just done their own color correction on the 2004 base?Harmy said:

Ha! Nice memory (I'm not sure how you know about the DS and cigars though. I can't remember).
I've been lurking here for a long time, following ESB:R and promote SW:R when I can around the internet. ESB:R used to be my most anticipated film in the last ten years, but now Prometheus has beaten it. :P
I made an attempt to do a mockup of the spark idea for Vader's saber striking the floor. Here it is:
“Lifes a song you don’t get to rehearse, and every single verse can make it that much worse”
The other option would be to simply remove the sound effect - I don't think it's terribly obvious he hit the floor otherwise.

True, though it might take something away from Vader as a threat?
I also added a spark sound in the mockup. It is possible that just the change of the sound alone would fix it, without adding sparks.

Looks good, oh riginal. I think the sparks are a cool idea. I hope Ady likes them, too!

An update from Adywan on the contest to win props and models from ESB:R filming (taken from the failbook page):
If the total number of donations for the prize draw reaches 20 by the end of next week I will release a brand new clip from ESB:R that has not been seen before. So far the total is not even in double figures :(
Further statement made after a few donations came in:
Thanks guys. Just hit double figures so we are half way there for the new clip. I've still got about £5 - 6000 to raise to cover all the materials needed. I'm in the process of working out a detailed estimation but so far it's looking to be around that figure.
seems we're about 6 people short now...

Digging the subtle new sound that doesnt distract you from the flow

EDIT:
I hope this can be useful for any editor in the future
I was thinking that instead of sparks how about a little puff of smoke? At that angle I don't think you'd expect to see many sparks anyway. a tidbit of smoke shouldn't be distracting.
Hey guys, should all this recent mockup stuff be in ESB:R or ESB/ROTJ Wishlist, or an entirely new thread, similar to the ANH:Redux thread?
I doubt it's the first one, because we're not Adywan.
I think they were posted here as suggestions for Ady to accept or reject but they would be equally welcome on the Wishlist thread if he decides not to do it.
It is my belief that mockups for suggestions that Adywan has not vetoed outright are welcome. As I'm not sure that Adywan has realized that this is a possibility, the current mockups are on topic.timdiggerm said:

A few years back, mockups used to be posted quite a bit in this thread as suggestions for Ady. I used to post them back then as well.
Kinda sad to not see mockups as often as before, but with ESB being observed to death by everyone that did the mockups, I'm sure most of the ideas were already thought up since then!
But yeah, the mockup would also fit in the ESB/ROTJ Wishlist. I'll post it there as well.
