My problem is that there is too much vagueness in the study, as a result of not considering any of those factors.
We may have an idea about the reaction to 12 books "with twists", which isn't a statistically relevant number, but it's hard to transfer this result to the prediction of the enjoyment of OTHER works, when established how DIFFERENT reactions can be depending on the structure and implementation-

I'm not saying it was entirely pointless.
But it would need further research, and reproductions, before you could make it into a valid general observation.

Yeah i think if someone ruined empire for me as a kid and told me who darth really was, i would have been pretty pissed off.

See when Lucas did this in film it was a cool and original idea.  Before the Leia as a sister thing.

As a literary device it was old hat.  As a mythic archetype it was already cliche.

Then there is the obvious even if you have not read the films spoilers before hand.

Like Watching Indiana Jones IV and instantly picking up that Indy is Mutt's dad even though the characters are oblivious.

I was thinking about this again... maybe you can compare it to a good joke.

The first time you hear it, it may make you take a second to "get it" which might make you feel inferior, especially if other people are already laughing at it.

The next time you hear it, it may be almost as funny, but it's also not a surprise.  You may feel more confident about yourself... but there's nothing like hearing a joke for the first time.

There's nothing like seeing an unspoiled movie for the first time.  There is at least one other thing like seeing a spoiled movie for the first time: seeing a movie a 2nd time.

So basically, seeing an unspoiled movie would allow you to watch something both ways... whereas having a movie spoiled before you first watch it may only allow you to watch it the one way.
