comic book Batman IS Batman. That is where the character came from. Everything else is based on that.
So what? There are so many different Batmans in the Original Batman Comics from what I hear, it doesn't matter.

Batman creator, Bob Kane, noted that this series saved the Batman comic series from cancellation when the show revived the character's popularity. Despite this, most comic fans despised this series for stereotyping superheroes and comics as campy nonsense. Furthermore, soon after the show was canceled, the character's comic series took on a dark and deadly serious tone that was reminiscent of the original comics in the late 1930's as a reaction to the TV show's light touch.![]()
read the bold and especially the underlined. I rest my case. As for the '60s tv series, I do respect it. I loved it when I was growing up. I can't wait for them to release the thing on DVD/Blu Ray. When they do, I will be one of the first to get it. But I don't take it as a serious interpretation of Batman. I do not believe that just because the '60s tv series treated Gordon one way, means that everything that comes after it must do the same thing.

Warb, stop it.
You're trying to argue with someone who doesn't care. I don't care what Nolan based his movies on. I don't care what the comics say. I have no interest in them. I have chosen how I enjoy or do not enjoy Batman films, and nothing you say will make a difference in that regard.
Seriously, let it go.
calm down. If you really don't care, stop replying to me and go discuss something else in another thread. I didn't mean to step on your toes. I thought we were just having a pleasant discussion on subject on which we disagree. I respect your opinion, I never meant to imply otherwise. I'm not really sure why you are getting upset with me. However, I am fine with agreeing to disagree. I am also fine with continuing the discussion with the others if they want, and just leaving you out.

This... is a perfect example of the kinda pleasantries I'm trying to avoid like pestilence :D
It's so... Chris.
No disrespect intended ;)

I love that one! All Star B&R had me rolling in the floor-freaking hysterical! People can go on about Bale's anger all day long, but he's certainly not the Godamn Batman.

My only problem so far with Year One's animated adaptation is that Conroy sadly will not be playing the part of Batman. Won't deter me from at least checking it out... I hope he gets to play old Bats in Dark Knight Returns, though; Return of the Joker convinced me no one else can play old Batman.
Dream project. Seriously-I've dreamed about an animated TDKR with Kevin on board. That should be a feature 2D hand animated film with a hard hard hard R rating.

Great or Good
Okay
Poor to Terrible
The Nolan films are well crafted, but are far too uncomfortable with having a comic book as their source material. They are trying so very, very hard to be "serious film". Also, Nolan's version of Gotham sucks. Bale is only good when he goes into Patrick Bateman mode as Bruce Wayne (like in the scene in BB where he kicks everyone out of the party). Bale's Batman voice is just terrible.

This is true. Just like Superman, there are so many versions of the character in "the books" that when they make new ones for TV/movies it's hard to make the complaint that they're "not like the books".
twister quoted Bob Kane:
Without the Adam West TV show, the books probably would have been cancelled.
That might have been preferable. I think the damage that show did to the West's perception of "comic book" or "graphic novel" is still being overcome.
Frink:
Beats me, I don't like [Nolan/Bale's Batman movies]. But my guess is people like them despite Bale, or at least despite his Batman.
That's not true for me. I think his Batman works in the world as presented. I already said that TAS is my favourite interpretation of the character and I will be the first to admit that Bale's Batman is very much the opposite of Conroy's... Just like the Batmobile is very different as well... But it's a different style, a different Gotham. I think Conroy's Batman would be out of place in Nolan's movie and I think Bale's Batman fits it perfectly.

Without the West series, the Flash Gordon film might not exist, so beware what you say! :)

Sorry- didn't finish my thought here. It's entirely possible that the books would have been cancelled and that they would have been renewed at a later date but would have been less, uh... molested. Comics are cancelled all of the time and then brought back. Being cancelled is far from the end of a major comic book/characters's life. But being made extremely goofy often is.
I think Batman recovered all right. But "Comics" are much more accepted as a viable storytelling medium for all stories for people of all ages in other parts of the world. I can't help but wonder if Adam West's Batman show saved the comics from 3-4 years of cancellation but caused 40 years of public opinion about the comics.
Kind of like The New Deal.

Without the Spirit or the Shadow, Batman the comic probably would not exist, and Bob Kane gets all the credit for it when he was not the only creative hand in it.
Its like Stan Lee taking all the credit for Marvel, and Jack Kirby is forgotten.
Xhonzi i think the public opinion on comics goes back to the creation of the comics code and the censorship which shut down EC comics because they would not do censored books.
Also they claimed the comics had a bad influence on children and it was Communists influencing kids, commie propaganda.
Politicians especially the Religious right violated the sovereign rights of Americans freedom of speech, with this censorship its just like pre code Hollywood before they came in and cleaned up all the sex and nudity to appease hard right Christians.
Too bad in time even liberals got in on censorship like AL Gore's Ex wife.

There is some truth in what you say.
Though I don't think we called them "Hard Right Christians" back in the day. They were just Christians and they were most of us back then.
And there's hardly any censorship. Have you turned on your TV recently? Or wandered into the wrong end of the bookstore? Or been on "the internet."

I remember at my old university newspaper, a black comic author wrote a comic that had the 'N' word in it. I have never see such an outrage! There were demands for resignations and sensitivity training. Never mind how many statements about Christians, Israelis (because you can be anti-Israel and yet not antisemitic somehow), your mother sleeping with the mailman, etc. were stated in the paper. Liberals are interestingly selective in what they censor: if it's vulgar, it's okay; if it's offensive towards certain minorities (and not all minorities, mind you, only special cases), then off with their heads!

I hated Mrs. Tom Cruise.
Katie Holmes didn't appear to be bad to me.
What is with the near consistent Katie Holmes hate? Her acting wasn't that bad in the movie, so it wasn't that. I used to find that girl insanely attractive; not at all in recent pics though, haven't really taken time to consider why. Seems like the whole Tom Cruise thing has brought her a lot of hate. Is it more than that?
Bringing in new actors to replace old ones and passing them off as the same character has always really bothered me, I would have much rather seen Katie Holmes in The Dark Night than the really ugly actress they got to replace her. I think they should have just written her character out of the story for continuity sake. Everything her character does in TDK could have just as well been done with a different new female character. I guess it made her death more dramatic since she'd been close to Bruce since childhood, but it is still an awkward transition from actress to actress.

Oh my god, she's hideous! KHWF!!!!
:-/
How can anyone think this lady:
is 'ugly'?
She may not be a supermodel but I find many supermodels unattractive.
I find her more-or-less plain myself. Not beautiful, but not ugly either.
This reminds me of vfp's "women that don't do it for you this thread is worthless without pictures" thread.
...
:-(
She looks okay enough in the picture Bingo posted, but she looks pretty awful throughout the entire movie of TDK. I seem to recall when the movie first came out many other members expressed similar feelings regarding her looks.
She'd be pain enough, if it weren't for the very protrusive cheek bones and the droopy eyes thing she has going on.
She is the type of actress who I can only assume gave absolutely fantastic head on the casting couch.
