I personally liked him and thought he did his job well. I think a big problem for many is the comparison of the film with the source material. Comics, novels, TV series, and films are all vastly different media used to tell a story. You can't always keep characters identical to their source. That being said, I appreciate a film that shows respect for the original stories and characters, but why bother making a movie if it's nothing but a rehash of a pre-existing story? Lord of the Rings, which is surprisingly faithful, took many liberties in order to tell its tale in a logical and interesting manner.
