Some come up with a different username on each site they visit; some come up with a universal name for every site. Some choose something personal, and inside joke, a hobby, or various other reasons. Some have had theirs for years, some only recently.
I chose mine in 2004. I obviously chose it because of Star Wars (Darth Maul in particular) and Ender's Game (I was a bigger fan of the Ender/Shadow series back then). I chose to combine two names because I didn't like the idea of an unoriginal name that required numbers (my very first handle was grandadmiral36, obviously after Grand Admiral Thrawn, but I always hated that there were 35 previous grandadmirals). Before that I used darth_gollum (and in a few places I remain that), and I chose that one because I thought of myself as a dark loner at the time. After trying to be more of a people person, I chose a good character rather than evil. I unfortunately have an evil twin (usually typing his name as DarthEnder, while mine is usually darth_ender), and surprisingly we have similar interests. It looks like his name goes back further than mine, so I guess I was #2 on this one as well. Oh well. I like it enough to keep it for some time.
